This small luxury crossover boasts an upscale interior, a 281-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine and many safety-oriented features.

Most people know of ABBA, the popular Swedish pop band from the 1970s that enjoyed a recent revival after its songs were used in the “Mama Mia!” musical and movie. Now it seems there’s another Swedish export ready for a re-release — and it’s not Ace of Base. It’s Volvo. Yes, Volvo is still building family wagons (how ’70s!), but its new 2010 XC60 is as up-to-date and fashionable as a small premium crossover can be.

The popularity of small luxury crossovers has grown in recent years, with an increasing number of shoppers desiring vehicles that offer the utility of a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 in a more luxurious package. Volvo’s 2010 XC60 meets this desire with a healthy dose of power and style (yes, really) while also boasting the safety-conscious design for which the brand is known.

In terms of size, the five-passenger XC60 is smaller than the brand’s XC90 seven-passenger crossover SUV and roughly comparable to a BMW X3. To our eyes, the XC60 is to Volvo’s lineup as Anni-Frid Lyngstad is to ABBA’s, which is to say, it’s the best-looking of the bunch. Underneath the distinctive, cleanly styled sheet metal is hardware related to the brand’s latest S80 sedan, including the S80 T6′s turbocharged inline-6 engine. Unlike the front-drive S80, though, the XC60 has standard all-wheel drive for enhanced traction.

Available in a single T6 trim level, the XC60 comes packed with plenty of amenities, including leather upholstery, an eight-speaker audio system and power front seats. You can also get cool-looking two-tone upholstery and real wood trim for the center stack to dress up the interior — it’s a hip Swedish counterpoint to the typically austere German designs. Another item of note is “City Safety.” Utilizing a short-range infrared rangefinder, the City Safety system can detect an imminent low-speed frontal impact at up to 19 mph and either minimize the impact or avoid it entirely by automatically applying the XC60′s brakes.

Could the XC60 be Volvo’s “Mama Mia!,” a chart-topping smash that takes discos — er, the automotive world — by storm? Well, probably not. You’ll likely be disappointed by the XC60 T6′s high MSRP, which is partially a result of having so much equipment as standard. Meanwhile, there are plenty of other desirable choices in this segment, such as the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti EX35 and FX35 and Mercedes-Benz GLK350. Even so, the 2010 Volvo XC60 is a solid hit thanks to its combination of performance, convenience, style and safety. If you take one for a test-drive, just make sure to bring some ABBA tunes along for the ride.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2010 Volvo XC60 small luxury crossover is available in one well-equipped T6 trim level. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, power front seats with driver memory settings, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker audio system with a CD/MP3 player, satellite and HD radio, and auxiliary audio and USB audio jacks.

The optional Technology Package buffs out the XC60 with a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system, a navigation system with real-time traffic, a back-up camera and rear parking sensors. Additional safety equipment comes courtesy of the Collision Avoidance Package, which contributes adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system and other driver aids. Heated front and rear seats and a power rear liftgate can be had via the Climate Package and Convenience Package, respectively. Other options include adaptive xenon headlights, various exterior styling enhancements, a panoramic sunroof, keyless ignition/entry and dual integrated rear booster seats.

The Volvo 700 and 900 series are two ranges of mid-size car manufactured by Volvo Cars in the 1980s and 1990s. The 700 series was introduced in 1982, followed in 1990 by the 900 series. The 700, designed by Jan Wilsgaard, was originally to have been a replacement for the 200 series, but production of that model continued.

The most visible differences between the 700 and the 900 series were the more rounded corners on the body of the latter, and a somewhat better-appointed interior. The 960 was substantially revised for the 1995 model year, improving the handling. The range was first augmented and finally supplanted by the Volvo 850 in 1993, with the last of the 900s being sold in 1998. Some 900 series were built as chassis for ambulances and hearses after the main production run had been completed.

The 760 was Volvo’s attempt to cement a place in the prestige market, after building a reputation for being solid and safe rather than out-and-out luxurious cars. Jan Wilsgaard, head of Volvo’s Design and Styling team, proposed over 50 new designs for the new car. It was introduced to the US in 1982 for the 1983 model year as the 760 GLE sedan. This new design was criticized by the media when released: Gordon Murray of Autocar Magazine said, “To me it’s obscene! That goes right against the grain of what everybody else is trying to do. To me it looks like a European version of a North American car. It produces the same amount of power as a 2600 or 3500 — in this day and age it disgusts me to see something about like that. It’s a definite step backwards.” All that changed however when Autocar and Car & Driver got their hands on a turbo intercooled 760; they said it was one of the best handling and fastest accelerating cars they had seen in a while, thundering from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in under 8 seconds.

Turbocharged and intercooled variants were added in 1984, station wagon variants and the 740 – the 760′s lower-specification sibling – were introduced for the 1985 model year. In 1985 Electronic Traction Control system was introduced. For the 1988 model year, the 760 received numerous updates. From the outside, the most noticeable of the over 2,000 changes were the revised front sheetmetal, including an aluminium hood, recessed windscreen wipers, and new aerodynamic headlights. Inside, all 760s were equipped with a new electronic climate control (ECC), a revised dashboard, three-position tilt steering, and a new stereo system. Underneath, sedans received the same multi-link independent rear suspension that was used on the 780.[1] Along with the revised dash, the interior saw the addition of a revised dome light and many fabric accent pieces.

The Volvo 760 was also used as a police car in several countries. East German dictator Erich Honecker also often used this Volvo in his governmental car pool.

For its final year of production, 1990, 760 sedans received tail lights in the style of the Volvo 780 (see below), and minor interior changes. The 760 was discontinued after the 1990 model year (with production ending on 27 June 1990), and was replaced by the Volvo 960, an evolutionary update of the 760 chassis. The Volvo 740 outlived the 760, remaining for another two years.

The Volvo 850 is a compact executive car produced by Volvo Cars from 1992 to 1997 (sold as 1993–1997 in the U.S. market) and designed by Jan Wilsgaard. Available in sedan/saloon and station wagon/estate body styles, the Volvo 850 was notable as the first front-wheel drive vehicle from this Swedish manufacturer to be exported to North America. It is often considered the vehicle that gave Volvo its reputation as a high-end auto maker in North America due to the level of features available in this model that were not offered in previous models. At the time of its development, the 850 was regarded as one of the largest engineering endeavours in Sweden.

The Volvo 850 was introduced worldwide as a 1992 model, but arrived in the U.S. in the 1993 model year. It was sold as a sedan with a wagon model on sale from 1992 in Europe. The 850 was the first Volvo model in the U.S. to feature front-wheel drive and an all-aluminum 20-valve five-cylinder engine. The 850 was Volvo’s top-seller in the mid-1990s. In markets outside the U.S. a 10-valve variant of the five-cylinder was popular for its lower cost and better fuel economy.

All U.S. 850s received standard equipment such as dual front airbags, antilock brakes, head restraints and three-point seat belts for all passengers, power windows, door locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and dual zone climate control. Side torso airbags became a world first when introduced as an option for 1995. Some other options during the model run included features such as traction control, leather interior, power glass moonroof, power seats, heated seats, remote keyless entry, automatic climate control, and automatic transmission.

The 850 sedan features a remarkable interior space of 2.80 m³ (99 cubic ft). This is slightly more than the 2.78 m³ (98 cubic ft) of the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class even though the car is reasonably compact on the outside. This space is achieved by mounting the in-line 5-cylinder engine transversely (from the left to the right of the car) under the hood. The road-holding and handling are vastly improved over the previous rear-wheel drive Volvos.

The 850 Turbo Wagon is one of the fastest production station wagons in the world, capable of 250+ km/h (160+ mph) when ungoverned.[citation needed] Production models of the wagon and sedan are electronically governed to approximately 142 mph (229 km/h).[citation needed] In 1996 a “Platinum” edition of the 850 Turbo was available. The exterior paint for these models came in a metallic pearl platinum-color and had special 16-inch (410 mm) alloy wheels. The interior was fitted with leather seats and burled walnut accents. Only 1500 of these were imported for the U.S. market.[1]

For the last model year (1996/1997) 850 was available also with 5-cylinder Volkswagen/Audi turbodiesel engine (D5252T) with 140 bhp (104 kW; 142 PS). As well AWD (All Wheel Drive) model was introduced with a new 193 bhp (144 kW; 196 PS) low pressure turbo 2.4 litre engine (B5254T).

The Volvo C30 is a small coupe produced by Volvo (part of the Ford Motor Company Group). The C30 is a three-door, four-seat hatchback powered by straight-4 and straight-5 engines. Despite the name, the car is the hatchback version of the S40/V50/C70 range and therefore uses Ford C1 platform.

The production car was officially unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show.[1] In mid-2006, the C30 was approved for production launch in late 2006 in Europe. The C30 went on sale in Canada in March 2007 as a 2007 model, and in October 2007 in the United States as a 2008 model, with the T5 as the single version.[2] It is being marketed as a premium hatchback or “sports coupe” specially designed for first-time Volvo buyers and the youth market. Production is expected to be 65,000 units a year, 75% for sale in the European market.

Notably, the design of the C30 recalls another important Volvo, the 1800ES, the estate adaptation of the P1800 Coupe. According to Simon Lamarre, chief studio designer, “the 1800ES has become one of the icons for Volvo,” [3] inspiring the design of the Volvo C30.[3] However, not everyone is pleased with the C30s “sawed-off rear” and calling it “Volvo’s AMC Gremlin.”[4]

The C30 is offered with a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol engines include a 100 hp 1.6 litre straight-4, a 125 hp 1.8 litre straight-4, a 145 hp (108 kW; 147 PS) 2.0 litre straight-4, a 170 hp (127 kW; 172 PS) 2.4 liter straight-5, and a 227 hp (169 kW; 230 PS) turbocharged 2.5 litre inline-5. Diesel engines will be a 109 hp (81 kW; 111 PS) 1.6 litre inline-4, a 136 hp (101 kW; 138 PS) 2.0 litre inline-4, and a 180 hp (134 kW; 182 PS) 2.4 litre inline-5. All models will be fitted with a manual gearbox, and the inline-5 petrol versions will have automatic transmissions as an option. Speculation suggesting that a 1.4 litre inline-4 petrol engine would be offered proved false and the smallest engine in the range is the 1.6 litre engines.

An upgraded sound system includes a digital 5×130 watt ICE Power amplifier from Alpine featuring Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, and 10 loudspeakers from Danish Dynaudio, appealing to the youth market.

Three modified C30s were shown at the 2006 SEMA event: Evolve’s C30, IPD’s C30 and a Heico Sportiv/Burton Snowboard C30.[5]

The Volvo C70 is a two-door manufactured by Volvo Cars in two generations: the first from model years 1997-2002 as coupé and from 1997-2005 as a softop convertible. The second generation C70 has been marketed since 2006 as a retractable hardtop

Volvo introduced the first generation C70 at the 1996 Paris Motor Show, following a European introduction as a 1997 model, and later as a 1998 model in North America — with both low-pressure (2.4L) and high-pressure (2.3L), 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines and manual and automatic transmissions. Peter Horbury[1] [2] designed the exterior and Mexican designer Jose Diaz de la Vega[3] led the interior design team.

The C70 broke Volvo’s decades-long styling tradition of boxy, rectilinear designs. According to Peter Horbury, Volvo’s design chief from 1991 to 2002, with the C70, Volvo threw away the box, but “kept the toy inside!”[4] Our vision was to design a convertible that would meet the needs of a family of four looking for comfortable blue-sky motoring in a vehicle also providing stylish looks, performance and faultless driving and road-holding.”[5]

In a development program of 30 months[2] and working with a Volvo 850-derived platform, [2] Britain’s TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) co-designed the car’s basic design and suspension tuning with Volvo. Manufacture of the C70 was a joint venture[4] until the two companies experienced disputes that threatened to interrupt production; TWR did not contribute to the second generation C70.

Volvo’s first modern convertible, the C70 was manufactured in Uddevalla, Sweden on a separate assembly line from the 70-series sedan and station wagon. The four-seater convertible featured an electrically-heated glass rear window, automatic (pop-up) rollover hoops, seat belt pre-tensioners, boron steel reinforced A-pillars, front and side airbags, and a safety cage — a horseshoe like structure around the passenger compartment[3].

The cloth convertible top, initially available in four colors,[6] was fully automatic, operated by a single, dashboard-mounted button.[6] The top stored automatically under an integral rigid tonneau cover in a system pioneered in modern convertibles with the fourth generation Mercedes SL.

The Volvo S40, V40 and V50 are compact executive cars produced by Volvo Cars. There have been three generations, the first launched in 1995, the second one in 2004, and the third in 2008. The second is listed by Forbes as one of the best luxury cars for young affluent drivers.[1] It is also the most popular car among women in the luxury segment in the US market according to J.D. Power and Associates.[2]

In the summer of 1995 Volvo released the S40 saloon (sedan) and V40 estate (station wagon). They were built in the Netherlands at the NedCar factory, a pre-Ford joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi Motors. It was based on a common platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma, but the Japanese version did not sell as well in Europe.

In 2001 the 40 Series went through a facelift (“Phase II”), and a number of technical improvements were simultaneously introduced, such as improved engine management, direct (diesel) fuel injection, extra safety features, larger brake discs, new front suspension and steering, revised rear suspension, larger tires and a slight widening of the track width.

The 40 Series cars were equipped with four-cylinder engines, such as a 1.9 L diesel or 1.6, 1.8,1.9T , or 2.0-litre fuel-injected gasoline engines, with low (2.0T) and high (T4) pressure turbo variants at the top of the motor range. The 1.9-litre was the only engine available in North America.

In the UK trim levels were base, SE and CD.

The Volvo S40 was the first car to earn four stars in Euro-NCAP.

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive sedan produced by the Swedish automaker Volvo since the year 2000. An all-new S60 is expected for the 2010 model year.

The S60 marked a clean break for Volvo from the boxy design that many stereotyped the brand with in 1980s and 90s. Its design by Peter Horbury built upon the styling of the S80 and was the most marked departure from traditional Volvo styling since Horbury joined the firm in 1992. Accordingly, Volvo marketed the car as heralding a “Revolvolution.”

It was built upon Volvo’s P2 platform, which was shared with three other Volvo models: the S80, the V70 and the XC90.

The S60 was refreshed in 2005. The exterior was updated with body-colored side moldings and bumpers, as well as new headlamps. The T5 engine received an increase of 10 bhp.

Police specification models came about through Volvo’s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. As a result the Police specification vehicles have a striking difference from original showroom model. Firstly the suspension was up-rated to deal the demands of Police work; this included fitting the front suspension of the D5 model variant (as the suspension was designed to deal with the heavier diesel engine). Nivomat self-levelling suspension was also fitted to the rear to ensure correct geometry of the vehicle, regardless of the weight carried. On early models, the clutch was also replaced with the stronger D5 unit.

The Volvo S70 is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Volvo from 1997 to 2000. The S70 was the sedan and the V70 the station wagon; they both represented mainly new styling and revised suspensions from the 1993 through 1997 Volvo 850. The S70 was replaced with the Volvo S60, which is in fact smaller in size.

Introduced in the U.S. for the 1998 model year, the first Volvo S70 sedan and Volvo V70 wagon were updated versions of the Volvo 850. The S70′s body style was a more rounded version of the 850.

The six trim levels were: Base, SE, GL, GLT, T5 and R (exclusive to Europe). The exterior has new headlamps and a reshaped hood as well as a rounder front end. The new interior included dual front and side airbags.

New electronic brake modulation helped optimize performance in normal stops. Volvo’s traction-control system now included throttle as well as brake intervention. A starter interlock was added to models with a manual gearbox, while automatic transmissions gained “adaptive” shift logic. Immobiliser became standard. Dashboard airbags received new two-stage sensors that matched deployment force to road speed and belt use; they also automatically unlocked doors after the bags triggered.

In the 1999 model year, the Volvo badge was changed. For the 2000 model year (2001 in the U.S.), the S70 model was discontinued and V70 was replaced by a completely new car with same model designation. The newcomer was built on Volvo’s new large car platform that is shared by Volvo S80 (the first that was to be available of this series) and Volvo S60. Also, seat-mounted side airbags were modified to improve protection to the head and chest in case of impact. Newly standard was Volvo’s WHIPS system, designed to move the front seatbacks and headrests rearward in a rear-end collision, to minimize whiplash. The S70 Base models gained an all-new 5 speed automatic transmission using a synthetic based transmission fluid. The potent engine in the V70 R AWD now was rated 261 hp (195 kW).

The base engine was a 2.4-liter dual overhead cam straight-5 gasoline engine that produced a maximum output of 168 hp (125 kW). The GLT had a turbocharged version of that engine that increased the power to 190 hp (141 kW). The T5 had a more highly tuned 2.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an output of 236 hp (175 kW). The Base and T5 models had an optional five-speed manual transmission, the GL and GLT were available with only an automatic transmission. An option on the S70 was the TRACS traction control system that would apply the front brakes to limit wheel slippage. All models had disc brakes and anti-lock braking system. These were also among the first cars in the United States to offer side airbags, an option that has extended to nearly all models today. Drive-by-wire was added starting with the 1999 model year, replacing the traditional throttle cable arrangement with an Electronic Throttle System (ETS); also added was coil-on-plug ignition, first featured on the Volvo 960, replacing the distributor and spark plug wires. Such cars can easily be distinguished from the 1998 model year versions by the presence of an ETS light on the instrument cluster. All-wheel drive was also offered with the GLT model in 1999 and 2000 years.

The Volvo S80 is a high-end car from Swedish automaker Volvo and was introduced in 1998 as a replacement for the rear-wheel drive Volvo 960/S90 sedan. The Volvo S80 was built at the Torslanda Plant (Torslandaverken) in Gothenburg, Sweden. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation. Now, the third generation V70 wagon is marketed as the estate version for the second generation S80 sedan. This is a part of a major product overhaul at Volvo, including a most luxurious large estate and sedan.

It is notable for being one of the first Volvos to depart from the company’s traditionally boxy, conservative styling. The S80′s styling, with its pronounced beltlines and tail lights that narrow and go from curves to points as they go up, has been adopted throughout the Volvo line, especially on the S60 and S40 sedans.

The first generation Volvo S80 had one of the highest crash test ratings in the world for five years.[citation needed] The second generation Volvo S80 in June 2007 scored the highest “good” rating in the IIHS crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts [1], continuing in the success of the first S80 sedan. The second generation S80 is better engineered than the outgoing model, in part due to a stiffer more rigid chassis.

The first generation S80 is based on the Volvo P2 platform. More than 368,000 first generation S80s were built before the introduction of the new model. [3]

This S80 sedan being Volvo’s flagship model was heavily equipped with numerous safety systems to ensure all occupants safety, including SIPS and WHIPS.[4]

The S80 has three firsts for passenger cars. The first was the use of a built-in, fully integrated GSM phone, complete with both a hands free function and a lift-up hand-set. The second was the fitment of the straight six engine in a transverse mounting. Volvo claims to be the first manufacturer to succeed in mass producing this configuration “in modern time”[4], although British Leyland produced passenger cars using the E6 engine from 1970 to 1981 in cars such as the Austin Princess. The Volvo V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 small family car, produced by Volvo Cars, introduced in 2003 Bologna Motor Show and manufactured at the Volvo Cars plant in Ghent, Belgium.

It is based on the Ford C1 platform, as is the Mazda “3″. Volvo Cars Special Vehicle also produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (179 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Highlights of the V50′s interior design include soft “theatre” lighting of various sections, and a translucent “iced aqua” center stack. In safety, the V50 features “Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture”.

The top-of-the line V50 is the T5 AWD. This model features four-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5-litre petrol engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. Its valvetrain has four valves per cylinder and is a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing. The engine provides 220 bhp (164 kW) and 320 N·m (236 lb·ft) of torque. In Europe the 2.4 Liter turbocharged D5 diesel engine which provides 180 bhp (134 kW) and 350 N·m (258 lb·ft) of torque is also available. The output of that motor was downgraded from the original diesel motor in the XC90 which produces 185 bhp (138 kW) and 400 N·m (295 lb·ft) of torque.

In 2008 Volvo Car Corp confirmed that the next generation V50 will grow in size to be aligned on the side of the next generation S60[citation needed]. There is speculation that Volvo will not reintroduce the S40 and that the V50 will become the estate variant for the S60, just as the V70 is the estate variant of the S80.
