The Subaru Forester has long been an offbeat entrant in the compact crossover SUV class; in fact, we weren’t sure it technically belonged in that class. While some of its competitors featured jacked-up ride heights and butch aesthetics, the all-wheel-drive Subaru didn’t sit that much higher than a typical station wagon — and it kind of looked like one, too. Despite this quirky model’s loyal following among folks in colder climes, Subaru decided it was time to tackle the segment leaders head-on. Enter the fully redesigned 2009 Subaru Forester.

Although it’s still based on the same platform as the compact Impreza, which was itself redesigned for 2008, this new Forester can look the competition square in the eye. The 2009 Forester rides on a 103.0-inch wheelbase, some 3.6 inches greater than before. It’s also 3 inches longer overall, about an inch taller and has more ground clearance. Combined with a more traditional SUV styling treatment, these changes give the Forester an unprecedentedly rugged persona, even if few owners are likely to put its middling off-road chops to the test.

The outgoing model’s carlike handling has generally been retained, thanks to improved chassis rigidity, wider front and rear tracks and a new double-wishbone rear suspension in place of the old car’s strut-based setup. However, don’t expect the new Forester to corner like a sport wagon — extra height and ground clearance along with increased suspension travel add up to lots of bounce and roll in corners. Happily, the trade-off is a compliant ride, and the compactness of the new suspension frees up extra space inside — especially in the cargo hold. Rear legroom and overall comfort have also been dramatically expanded, and the new Forester sports a well-constructed and attractive control layout.

Overall, the Forester is a comfortable and practical people mover that looks like an SUV, drives like a car (albeit one that’s tall and softly sprung) and offers the security of standard AWD. And although there are no major engine upgrades for 2009, the Forester’s performance remains satisfactory. We’re not sure why Subaru elected to offer the Forester with a four-speed automatic transmission instead of the company’s five-speed unit, as this puts the redesigned crossover at a distinct disadvantage relative to top-selling competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. On the whole, though, the 2009 Subaru Forester has outgrown its quirky phase and looks like a legitimate contender for the compact crossover SUV crown.

The Alcyone SVX, also known outside Japan as the Subaru SVX, is a mid-sized GT coupé that was sold by Subaru from 1991 to 1997. It was Fuji Heavy Industries first attempt to enter the luxury/performance car market. Its intention was to combine two seemingly contradictory elements – comfort and performance. While a well-balanced sports car appealed to the driver in everyone, most people didn’t want to sacrifice comfort and luxury. The Subaru SVX actually created a new passenger car niche – the balanced luxury performance coupe.

The name Alcyone refers to the brightest star in the Pleiades star cluster, on which the Subaru logo is based.

The Subaru Alcyone SVX first made its debut at the 28th Tokyo Auto Show in 1989, as a concept car.

Legendary Italian Automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign designed the slippery, sleek bodywork, incorporating design themes from many of his design concepts, such as the Ford Maya[4] and the Oldsmobile Inca[5]. Subaru decided to put the concept vehicle into production and retain its most distinguishing design element, the unconventional window-within-a-window. Subaru called this an “aircraft-inspired glass-to-glass canopy.” The decision to release this car for production would give the public the first opportunity to drive a “concept car” as originally conceived.

Subaru introduced the SVX in the United States in July 1991 (as a 1992 model), following up the U.S. debut with a Japanese market introduction in September of that same year. The model was designed and marketed as the replacement for their aging, envelope pushing Alcyone XT and Alcyone XT6 coupes.

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the base model 1992 SVX-LS was $24,445, with the top of the line model with touring package, the LS-L, listing at $28,000. This was $8,000-$11,000 higher that any previous Subaru. By the end of its production run in 1997, the price had risen to $36,740 for the top-of-the-line LSi.

The Subaru Baja (pronounced ba-ha) was an light-utility, all-wheel-drive, four passenger, four-door crossover manufactured from 2003-2006 by Subaru. The Baja combined the handling and passenger carrying characteristics of a car with the open-bed versatility, and to a lesser degree, load capacity of a pickup truck.

The unibody design borrowed heavily from existing mechanicals, platform and sheetmetal of the Legacy and Outback wagons [1]. Production began on July 18, 2002[2] as a 2003 model at the Lafayette, Indiana, factory (Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., aka SIA) once shared with Isuzu.

The Baja’s concept recalls many similar car-based, open-bed vehicles:

The Baja is named after Mexico’s Baja California peninsula — home to the Baja 1000 off-road race.

In a package 6 in (152 mm) longer than an Outback [1], the Baja featured a four-door passenger compartment along with a 41 in (1041 mm) open bed and drop-down tailgate.

A system marketed as the “Switchback” [4] allowed the rear passenger seat to fold down and a small thru-hatch to fold inward, allowing an extended length of 75 inches (1900 mm) to the end of the open tailgate. A light in the instrument cluster signaled an “open” status for the Switchback.

Competing against the larger Chevy Avalanche and Ford Explorer Sport Trac, the Baja received a cool market reception. Limited advertising, late arrival of the turbo-charged model, heavily styled lower-body plastic cladding and a yellow-and-silver introductory color scheme may have discouraged broad appeal. James Healey, writing for USAtoday at the time of the Baja’s introduction called it a “controversial fashion statement with limited utility” [3].

The Subaru Forester, is a tall, all-wheel drive Compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) manufactured since 1997 by Subaru — currently in its third generation and now marketed as a compact crossover. Originally introduced to the United States in 1998, the Forester shared its platform with the Impreza up to the third generation and now features a hybrid platform of the Japanese Impreza wagon and the rear platform of the U.S.-spec Impreza sedan.[1]

According to the Subaru Forester article on Japanese Wikipedia, the name is coined to imply “a resident of the forest.”

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show November 1995 as the “Sutoriga” concept and made available for sale February 1997 in Japan, and to the American market in 1998, using the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine from the Outback, making 165 horsepower (123 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 162 lb·ft (220 N·m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. In Japan, the Forester replaced the Subaru Impreza Gravel Express, known in the USA as the Subaru Outback Sport. Due to the Forester’s low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for Passenger Vehicles, and does not require a risk of rollover warning label on the driver’s visor. Size and price wise it fits between the smaller Impreza, and the larger Legacy.

As with all Subaru models marketed in the United States and other international markets since the early 1990s, the Forester is equipped with an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan “SUV tough, Car Easy” to appeal to the SUV-oriented market; and to this end, the Forester from its inception had features associated with SUVs such as a large, boxy cargo area, higher h-point seating and more ground clearance while based on unibody rather than body-on-frame construction. In this sense, the Forester met the criteria of the term crossover before the term appeared. Notably, the third generation of the Forester is marketed by Subaru as a crossover.

The Forester, up until recently, was also sold in India as a Chevrolet alongside other Chevrolet models sold there. However since General Motors no longer holds an ownership stake in Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, sales in India of the Chevrolet-badged Forester have ended. The Forester is produced at the Gunma Yajima Factory in Japan.

The automatic transmission used on AWD equipped vehicles would normally send 90% of the engines torque to the front wheels and 10% to the rear wheels, using a computer controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the front wheels began to experience a loss of grip, the transmission automatically sent available torque to the rear wheels, up to 50-50 split between the front and rear wheels until grip was reestablished at the front wheels, without notifying the driver or occupants that torque was being redirected. When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicles weight shifts rearward, reducing front wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle’s weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in Reverse or “1st” gear, the transmission divides the torque 50-50 to both front and rear wheels.

The Subaru Impreza is a compact car that was first introduced by Subaru in 1993.

Impreza is a coined word, deriving from an originally Italian word, impresa, meaning a feat or achievement. In Polish, “Impreza” means “party”, “event” or “show”.

The Impreza was introduced after the popular Leone/Loyale was cancelled with the aging EA series engine. The Impreza was introduced with the popular EJ series engine found in the larger Subaru Legacy.

Subaru is the only company that can claim that their drivetrain is symmetrical for this class size of vehicle.

Compared to vehicles in a similar size class such as Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda Protegé/Mazda3, only the Impreza has always offered AWD, and as of 1996 Subaru made this feature standard equipment in some markets.

Subaru chose to continue their longstanding use of the boxer engine in the Impreza. According to Subaru, their configuration of the engine inline with the transmission minimizes body roll due to the lower center of gravity compared with offset engines in most other vehicles. The Subaru layout is also light-weight and lends itself easily to support all-wheel-drive, with power delivered directly to the front and rear wheels, using an integrated transfer case located inside the transmission. The boxer design provides perfect vibration mitigation due to the fact that the movement of each piston is exactly countered by the corresponding piston in the opposing cylinder bank, eliminating the need for a counter-rotating weighted crankshaft (harmonic balancer). Torque steer is also reduced with this type of powertrain layout since the front drive shafts are of equal length and weight.[1]

The Legacy is a mid-size car introduced by the Japanese manufacturer Subaru in February 1989 as a larger companion to the company’s Leone/Loyale. Worldwide distribution started in 1990. In Australia, the Legacy bears the name Liberty out of respect for Legacy Australia, an organization which aids veterans and their families during and after wars. According to a press release from Subaru listed by Autoblog, as of November 2008, 3.6 million Legacies have been built since its 1989 introduction. [1]

The standard equipped symmetrical all-wheel drive system is currently unique to the Legacy in this class size of vehicle.

In the USA market, the Legacy competes with the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord, the Mitsubishi Galant, and the Nissan Altima. German automaker Volkswagen offers AWD as an option on the Volkswagen Group A5 PQ46 platform, however it is an extra cost option on upper trim level cars. The Ford CD3 platform can also be equipped with AWD for the USA market, but it too is an extra cost option only on the uplevel V6 models.

The worldwide introduction of the Legacy was a notable departure from Subaru products in the past. Subaru had earned a reputation of building vehicles that were regarded as “quirky” and other Asian manufacturers were bringing more upscale and conventional appearing models to the market. The Legacy appeared at the same time as the USA introduction of Lexus and Infiniti and a couple years after Acura. However, Subaru didn’t have a large displacement V6 or V8. The Legacy was more aerodynamic than previously built products, with soft edges and a more coherent appearance. The sedan has a break in the beltline where it drops down from the windshield to the front door glass, and then juts up from the rear door glass to the rear window, and the beltline is interrupted as it transitions down to the rear window on the wagon. The beltline treatment was used again on the SVX when it was introduced in 1992. The Legacy was interpreted by some as Subaru’s attempt at participating in the growing, upscale market. The Legacy broke with many Subaru traditions, such as no longer locating the spare tire in the engine compartment, behind the engine and above the transmission. The Legacy was an all-new model, and slotted above the Leone in Subaru’s model range. The Legacy also introduced an entirely new engine series, called the Subaru EJ engine, which was quieter than the previous Subaru EA engine.

The Legacy began with a 5 door wagon or 4 door sedan body styles with FWD and an optional full-time AWD package, and was introduced in the USA, UK, Germany, the Benelux region of Northern Europe, Japan and Australia. The car was built with many luxury and technological advancements normally found on more expensive vehicles as standard equipment, such as power windows, central locking, fuel injection, air conditioning, power assist rack-and-pinion steering, alloy wheels, 4-wheel independent suspension with both negative scrub and anti-dive and squat geometery, anti-sway bars front and rear, and 4-wheel disc brakes. Items that were optional that didn’t make the vehicle too expensive were 4-channel ABS, licensed from Bosch and air suspension height control, which lowered the vehicle at speeds above 50 mph (80.5 km/h), and also allowed the driver to increase the vehicles ground clearance for off-road conditions.

On vehicles equipped with power central locking, the feature is activated from the inside drivers door lock switch only, by pushing the rocker switch to lock or unlock all doors. The power door lock switch is not labeled, and the appearance of the driver’s door lock rocker switch is the same as the door lock rocker switch on the other doors. Other doors can be locked or unlocked individually by pushing the respective door lock, but it will not lock or unlock the other doors. The outside key door lock can unlock the drivers door only by turning the key partially, or with a complete turn to the left to unlock all doors.

The Subaru Outback is an all wheel drive crossover manufactured by Subaru since 1995 in sedan and station wagon body styles.

All vehicles with an “Outback” badge are equipped with AWD; there were no versions built with only front wheel drive.

Subaru introduced the Outback to the same markets where the company marketed the Legacy, using the name Outback, except in Japan, where it was known as the Legacy Grand Wagon — then renamed Legacy Lancaster in model year 1997; then renamed again in 2005 as the Legacy Outback.

The name Outback derives from the remote, arid areas of Australia. Australian actor Paul Hogan served as spokesman for the Outback for several years.

The popular British car program Top Gear declared the Outback, along with the Ford Mondeo, as the best car of 2007 in their awards ceremony at the end of Season 10.

The Outback was available in Japan from 1995 as the Legacy Grand Wagon, and in the US and Australia as the Legacy Outback, a trim package with normal ground clearance but an “SUV look” with two-tone paint and fog lights. For MY 1994, the Legacy wagon was available as the Alpine Sport and Sun Sport, which were Value Option Packages included on the “L” trim level wagon, and graphics denoting the option package installed. The exterior was designed by Olivier Boulay, who was hired by Subaru on a short-term basis. It became a separately-marketed line in the United States in 1996. At this point it gained Outback-specific changes included unique bumpers (with large driving lamps incorporated into the front bumper), tweed-like seats and door panel inserts, taller tires with more aggressive tread, and a slightly higher ground clearance.

The Subaru Tribeca is a mid-size crossover SUV sold by Japanese automaker Subaru. The Tribeca was first sold as a 2006 model, with five-seat and seven-seat trims. Built on the Subaru Legacy platform, the Tribeca was inspired by the B9X concept car and has now evolved into its second styling generation.

The name Tribeca derives from the TriBeCa neighborhood of New York City. It competes with similar-sized crossovers such as the Nissan Murano, Mitsubishi Endeavor, Hyundai Veracruz and Dodge Journey. The Tribeca is the only vehicle in this class that comes equipped with AWD as standard equipment, with a FWD or rear wheel drive platform not available.

The Tribeca was only Subaru’s second production vehicle to forgo frameless side windows, the first vehicle being the Subaru SVX.

The Tribeca is not sold in Japan, and it was introduced in Australia and New Zealand in late 2006, with an introduction to Germany in 2007.

The Tribeca won best interior of the year by Ward’s Auto, a benchmark agent similar to JD Power, but more subjective. Also, it was considered Most Innovative Concept at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show.

The Tribeca scored well on Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests. It earned a “Top Safety Pick” ranking.
