The 900 is a car that was made by Saab Automobile from 1978 until 1998 in two generations. The first generation from 1978 to 1993 is known as the “classic”; the generation from 1994 to 1998 is known as the “new generation” (see below).

The “classic” 900 is based on the Saab 99 chassis, though with a longer front end to meet U.S. frontal crash regulations. The 900 was produced in 2- and 4-door sedan, and 3- and 5-door hatchback configurations; additionally, from 1986, a cabriolet (convertible) model was produced. There were single- and twin-carburetor, fuel-injection and turbocharged engines, including both Full Pressure Turbo (FPT), and in European models during the early 90s, Low Pressure Turbos (LPT).

The Saab 900 was a front-engined, front-wheel-drive compact car with a longitudinally-mounted, 45-degree slanted, L 4-cylinder engine, double wishbone front suspension and beam-axle rear suspension. In its heyday, the 900 was popular with drivers who enjoyed its comfort, safety, practicality (especially hatchbacks), and highway driving manners.

Like its predecessor the 99, the 900 contained a number of unusual design features that distinguish it from most other cars. Firstly, the engine was installed ‘backwards’, with power delivered from the crank at the front of the car. Secondly, the transmission, technically a transaxle, bolted directly to the bottom of the engine to form the oil pan (albeit with separate oil lubrication). Power from the crank would thus be delivered out of the engine at the front, then transferred down and back to the transmission below, via a set of chain-driven primary gears. Similarly, Minis also had their gearbox mounted directly below the engine; however, the Mini gearbox and engine shared the same oil, whereas the Saab 900 (and 99) gearboxes contained a separate sump for engine oil.

Very few front-wheel drive cars used a longitudinally-mounted engine configuration. Fewer still used a double wishbone suspension design. Refined over several decades of two-digit Saab models, the 900′s double wishbone design provided excellent handling and road feel. The rear suspension comprised a typical beam axle design, stabilized with a Panhard rod. However, the attachment points between the axle and chassis made up an unusual configuration that essentially consists of two Watt’s linkages at either end of the axle: a lower control arm attaches the axle to the bottom of the vehicle, while an upper link attaches at the top but faces towards the rear, unlike a typical 4-link design with both lower and upper links facing forward.

Early models did not have sway bars; they began appearing on certain models in 1985 and in U.S. and possibly other markets, became standard on all trim levels by the late 1980s. The sway bars decreased body roll, but at the expense of some ride comfort and when driven aggressively, increased inside wheelspin. The front and rear bars’ diameters were unchanged throughout the model’s run.

The 9000, an executive car made by Saab, was released in 1985. It was replaced by the Saab 9-5 in the fall of 1998 (for the 1999 model year).

The Type Four chassis, upon which the 9000 was based, was shared with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and the Alfa Romeo 164. The Fiat and Lancia looked much like the Saab, but the Alfa Romeo only shared the chassis. Because they were very similar, many parts can be exchanged between the four cars regardless of brand. For example, the doors from the Fiat Croma fit directly on the 9000, but are lighter, due to less side impact protection. The windshield from the Croma can also be used on the 9000. This type of windshield gives a safe driver visibility.

The design was by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Later year models actually achieved better fuel economy at higher speeds than lower ones due to the combined effects of the front airdam and rear spoiler. This was especially true of the hatchback CSE model vehicles.

The original 9000 was a 5-door hatchback. A 4-door sedan version was later added (the 1988 CD) and, in 1992, the hatchback appearance was modified and modernized, in the CS version.

Because its platform was shared closely with three other cars, the Saab 9000′s ignition key was situated on the steering column (like the Saab 95/96/97), instead of the Saab 99/900 location, between the front seats. The later 9-5 returned the ignition back between the front seats.

For the first year, the only engine available was a watercooled DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with a turbocharger, at 1985 cc, giving 175 hp (129 kW).[1] It was equipped with a computer display (the EDU, electronic display unit) showing actual and approximate fuel consumption, distance to an empty fuel tank, alternator output voltage, lowest battery voltage during engine start and the outside temperature.[2] If the outside temperature fell to a range of 26 ? (-3.3 ?) to 38 ? (3.3 ?), the temp display is automatically selected to warn of possible ‘black ice’ road conditions.[3] Later models added more trip computer functions to a separate display combined with the clock, including setting trip distances, arrival times, average speed, and excess speed alarms.[4] A separate pictogram monitored oil pressure, showed open doors/hatch, and all exterior light bulbs in case of failures.[5]

The Saab 9-2X is an automobile that was sold by Saab in the mid-2000s, but assembled in Japan at the Ota-Gunma plant by Fuji Heavy Industries and based on the Subaru Impreza with a modified body, suspension, and interior. Because of this, the 9-2X earned the nickname “Saabaru” before it was released. The Saab 9-1, a smaller car based on the next-generation Opel Astra, will come in 2009.

The 9-2X was built only as a four-door station wagon. The car’s name is written as 92X on its badge, but as 9-2X in advertising and other text.

Saab planned to offer the 9-2X to a limited public, starting in July 2004, for the 2005 model year. It was sold only in North America. Initial sales were slower than expected, with only 410 sold within the first two months; however, incentives and promotions helped drive sales in May 2005 alone to beat the combined sales of the year up until that point. The dissolution of the GM/Subaru relationship in 2005 spelled the end of this model. Production ended with the 2006 model year, and there was no return of the 9-2X for 2007.

The 2006 model 9-2X was priced between US$23,710 and US$27,670. The new for 2006 DOHC turbocharged 2.5 L engine produced 230 hp (172 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 235 lb·ft (319 N·m) of torque @ 3,600 rpm.

The Saab 9-3 is a compact executive car produced by the automaker Saab in Trollhättan, Sweden. The convertible (cabriolet) version is manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The 9-3 shares platform with the Opel Vectra, and with the Cadillac BLS made on the same assembly line in Sweden. It is Saab’s entry-level model, except in 2005-2006, when the Subaru Impreza-based Saab 9-2X was its entry-level model.

The car is badged as 93. Saab however consistently advertises it as 9-3. The name is pronounced “nine three”. The 9-3 was introduced in 1998[1] and succeeded by a redesigned 9-3 in model year 2003. The Saab 93, pronounced “ninety three” was a car produced by Saab from 1955 to 1960.

The first generation 9-3, a substantially improved last-generation Saab 900 was launched in 1998 for the 1999 model year. It featured slightly sleeker styling with some models sporting a black rear spoiler and removed Saab’s trademark centrally-mounted “snow flap”. It was available as a three or five-door hatchback, and as a two-door convertible. It was the last small Saab to use the company’s H engine. Notable improvements over the Saab 900 were improved ride and handling and substantially improved crashworthiness with standard side impact airbags with head protection and active headrests. The Saab 9-3 along with the Saab 9-5 and the Volvo S70 were the first cars in the world to earn the maximum score in a side impact augmented by a pole test[citation needed] based on Euro NCAP testing.

It was also available with a new variant of the B204 engine (B204E), a low pressure turbo (LPT) engine based on the B204L used in the last generation Saab 900. The first generation 9-3 was also the first Saab available with a diesel engine, an Opel sourced engine shared with the Opel Vectra.

A Saab innovation is the ‘Night Panel’, carried over from the Saab 900, which permits dousing of the instrument panel lighting, except for essential information, for less distraction when night driving.

The Saab 9-5 is an executive car produced by the Swedish automobile maker Saab. It was introduced in 1997 as the replacement to the Saab 9000. The 9-5 replaced the 9000 in the spring of 1997 for the 1998 model year. At the time, the car represented a great leap forward for Saab. In the United States, the 9-5 was introduced in the spring of 1998, for the 1999 model year.

The 9-5 is available with sedan and station wagon body styles. Aerodynamically, the sedan’s drag coefficient is 0.29, and the station wagon’s is 0.31 (U.S. version 0.33), which was introduced in 1999. It features such innovations as tracks to secure cargo down and a sliding load floor to make loading easier.

Badged as a 95, Saab consistently advertises it as the 9-5. The name is pronounced “nine five” rather than “ninety five”. This model should not be confused with the Saab 95, produced from 1959 to 1978.

The 9-5 is powered by Saab’s B205 and B235 straight-4 engines, and in Europe by Alfa Romeo’s 1.9 JTD 16V diesel straight-4. A version of the GM 54° V6 powered by a unique asymmetrical low-pressure turbocharger was available from 1999 to 2003. This engine was available only with an automatic transmission, and cars with this engine installed are distinguishable by their twin tailpipes. It was only available on Arc, SE, and Griffin models. In 2004, the V6 engine was replaced by a high pressure turbo straight-4 engine producing 220 hp (160 kW). By 2008 this engine was producing 260 hp (190 kW) even in the non-Aero model (US model).

The B235-based 9-5 models have suffered an abnormally high rate of engine failures due to engine oil sludge.[citation needed] This primarily affected the 1999-2002 models.[citation needed] Saab refined the engine’s positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) for the 2003 and later model years, virtually eliminating the problem. Additionally, SAAB created update kits to retrofit to the 1999-2002 cars since they cannot be easily modified to accept the 2003 and later system. Mounting complaints by 9-5 owners forced GM to offer an 8 year warranty on the engine in 4 cylinder models, provided the owner can produce proof that they followed the manufacturer’s oil change intervals. Saab now also recommend the use of fully synthetic oil as a preventative measure.

The Saab 9-7X is a Saab-branded mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) based on General Motors’ GMT360 platform, which also includes the current GMC Envoy and Chevrolet TrailBlazer (and for this the 9-7X has been given the nickname “Trollblazer”, although it is not assembled in Trollhättan, Sweden, the traditional production site for Saabs). The 9-7X is GM’s highest priced mid-size SUV and the first American built Saab. It is assembled in the same United States Moraine, Ohio production plant as the other GMT360 SUVs and shares many components with its platform mates. The Saab 9-7X succeeds the Oldsmobile Bravada as GM’s flagship mid-size SUV, and is the most expensive Saab ever produced. Its body panels are shared with the discontinued Bravada, yet it is distinguished by its front fascia, headlamps, hood, roof rack, tail lamps, and rear bumper.

It is the only GMT360 SUV not available with rear-wheel drive and, along with the Saab 9-2X, one of the first Saabs to feature standard all-wheel drive. 9-7X is also the first production Saab with a V8 engine and features substantial chassis revisions, including a 1-inch (25 mm) lower ride height and revised bushings and dampers, standard rear air suspension, and quicker steering to sharpen the handling. The interior design is inspired by the Saab 9-5 with features like the console-mounted ignition switch and swing-out cupholder retained. Missing are the “night panel” switch that extinguishes all unnecessary dash lighting, as well as the Saab active head restraints.

The GMT360 platform and the 9-7X are not scheduled to be updated or continued after the 2009 model year. Its position in the Saab lineup was eventually to be occupied by the Subaru B9 Tribeca-based Saab 9-6X, however GM has divested its Subaru stock and 9-6X development has been cancelled. Instead, the position will be filled by the Theta-based 9-4X, a vehicle scheduled for production during the 2010 model year. According to earlier posts on the GM Fleet website, the 9-7X, along with its platform mates Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy were to remain in production for the entire 2009 model year. More recently as of October 2008, parent company GM has announded the Moraine plant will close on December 23, 2008. The decision to close came early in the 2009 model year as sales continued to decline throughout the North American SUV segment. Sales of the 9-7X declined 30 percent in the first nine months of 2008. Envoy and Trailblazer sales declined 44 percent and 37 percent respectively.

All 9-7Xs feature all-wheel drive, leather seats, 18-inch (460 mm) alloy wheels, and side-curtain airbags. Entertainment and convenience features include OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, a 6-CD Bose audio system, and either a sunroof or a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
