In the past, small wagons were practical and affordable and not much more. If you wanted driving excitement, you were pretty much out of luck. The Pontiac Vibe, however, was one of the first entries in a new class of tall, compact sport wagons to change all that. Sure, it had the practical parts covered via an elevated driving position, remarkable passenger room, a versatile cargo area and impressive fuel economy. But it also had sporty styling, respectable performance and a cool-looking interior.

Once again a semi-identical twin to the Toyota Matrix, the redesigned-for-2009 Pontiac Vibe shares the Toyota’s interior and mechanical components — a genealogy that promises long-term reliability and durability. Unlike the identical cabins (furnished by Toyota), the exterior styling is unique to each model, with the Pontiac retaining its trademark dual grille theme. Pontiac says the steering and suspension were also specifically tuned for the Vibe.

In addition to the new styling, the ’09 Vibe (available in base, AWD and GT trims) brings a new engine for all but the base trim. Replacing the high-revving but ill-suited 1.8-liter engine in previous GTs is a torquey 2.4-liter four-cylinder. It’s the same one that’s used in the Toyota Camry and Scion xB and is perfect in the real world for cut-and-thrust city traffic and freeway merging. The previous base-level 1.8-liter inline-4 carries over, though it’s been heavily updated to provide a bit more power. All-wheel drive is available again, as well.

Other changes this year include a full complement of standard safety features and a newly standard telescoping steering wheel. Combined with increased front seat track travel, the new Vibe promises a more comfortable driving position for a greater range of body types. The interior retrains its driver-oriented layout and design, though now updated with easier-to-use controls, better materials and improved fit and finish.

If you’re shopping for a small wagon or hatchback, there are more choices than ever, including the Chevrolet HHR, Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza and Scion xB. They share many of the Vibe’s attributes, most notably an impressive amount of passenger/cargo space within a small footprint. The Chevy boasts cool retro styling and an available high-performance SS variant, the Mazda is known for its sporty handling and the boxy Scion has edgy youth appeal and the most interior space. If you don’t dig the Vibe’s styling vibe but appreciate its other attributes, Toyota’s near-identical Matrix may fit your fancy. But the 2009 Pontiac Vibe makes no apologies here. With its peppy performance, solid handling, low price and high level of practicality, the Vibe is a smart choice.

The big news for the 2009 Pontiac Solstice is the debut of a new hardtop model with a removable roof, which comes in the same base and GXP trim levels as its soft top counterpart. Also added to the lineup is the soft top Solstice Street Edition, which includes upgraded standard features and a sport suspension. Remaining changes this year are feature-related. The base Solstice now comes standard with previously optional items like ABS, stability and traction control and a limited-slip rear differential. Bluetooth connectivity is a new feature this year, available on all models.

There are few cars in the $20,000-$30,000 range that can turn heads quite like the Pontiac Solstice. Even though it’s entering its fourth year of production, this curvaceous roadster still commands looks from fellow drivers and passers-by. This sexy styling, along with the Solstice’s able powertrain and sporty driving dynamics, have made it a sales success. For 2009, Pontiac has added even more varieties of Solstice to the menu.

Most notably, this model year sees the debut of a Solstice coupe that’s available in the same base and GXP trim levels as its roadster sibling. Like the Chevy Corvette, the Solstice coupe actually has a targa-style removable roof panel. Pontiac says it’s concave on the inside to allow for more headroom — slightly more than 37 inches total. The coupe keeps the roadster’s rear fenders and rear fascia, but features a slightly different taillight design, and the deck lid is topped with a sleek-looking (and functional) ducktail-style rear spoiler. And although the interior remains mostly the same as the original Solstice, the area behind the coupe’s seats has been redesigned for better access to the cargo area. The result is a car that keeps the original Solstice’s sexiness while offering added rigidity and versatility.

Another addition to the 2009 Pontiac Solstice lineup is the Street Edition, which combines the base Solstice’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with the GXP’s performance-oriented suspension. We’re not quite sure of the logic behind putting the lower-powered engine and all-season tires on a stiffer suspension, but standard features such as air-conditioning and an upgraded seven-speaker audio system offer a level of comfort above that of other Solstice trims.

As before, the soft top 2009 Pontiac Solstice’s chief competitor is the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The Solstice (as well as its twin, the Saturn Sky) may have the advantage when it comes to looks and straight-line performance, but the Mazda still beats the Pontiac in day-to-day enjoyment thanks to its more athletic personality, quicker-revving engine, a more polished demeanor and an effortless drop top (including an available retractable hardtop). The Mazda is also more practical and enjoys a vastly superior reputation for reliability. We’d take the Miata over the base Solstice roadster any day, but the powerful GXP is tougher to resist — and even more so in coupe form.

Thanks to a long line of uninspiring products over the past couple decades, Pontiac — ostensibly GM’s “driving excitement” division — acquired a rather unfortunate reputation as fodder for rental-car fleets. But that’s been changing as of late, thanks to a concerted effort by GM to reassert the brand’s high-performance heritage. The 2009 Pontiac G8 is at the core of Pontiac’s recent resurgence. This powerful yet refined rear-wheel-drive performance sedan is unlike anything Pontiac has offered in recent memory — and we mean that as a sincere compliment.

The Pontiac G8 is a mechanical twin of the Commodore sedan from Holden, GM’s Australian subsidiary. That’s a good thing, as the Commodore has garnered accolades Down Under for providing affordable full-size functionality in a swift and agile package. Thankfully, Pontiac stylists resisted the urge to outfit the American version with the brand’s traditional assortment of scoops, vents and spoilers, and the car looks muscular and purposeful from most angles.

The G8′s mechanical merits are impressive, from its range of energetic engines to its impressive combination of sharp handling and supple composure over broken pavement. The new 2009 GXP model raises the performance bar even higher with a 402-horsepower version of the iconic Corvette’s 6.2-liter V8. One of our few complaints about the G8 has been the lack of a manual transmission, so we’re pleased to report that you can get one on the GXP (though still not on lesser G8 models). In any guise, the G8′s BMW-like MacPherson front strut layout and multilink rear suspension yields a sophisticated driving character that’s more typical of European sport sedans than large domestic rear-drivers.

The G8 also impresses inside, especially considering the plasticky depths to which Pontiac interiors had previously sunk. There are still too many hard surfaces, but the center stack — save for a couple cheesy Atari-grade digital readouts at the top — is more than a little reminiscent of Audi’s industry-leading efforts. Passenger room is plentiful, particularly in back, where all but the largest riders will have space to spare. The rear center seat isn’t so hospitable, however, as the wide center tunnel necessitated by the G8′s rear-drive layout essentially eliminates legroom there.

At the G8′s moderate price point, the Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300 twins are the only other roomy, rear-wheel-drive, full-size performance sedans available. The Chrysler siblings are certainly competent, but the G8′s sporting character sets it apart. We’re not fans of the G8′s lackluster fuel economy, but then, the Charger/300 duo aren’t likely to win any efficiency awards from the EPA either. Bottom line: If you want a large sedan with American attitude and Continental manners, the 2009 Pontiac G8 is in a class of its own.

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV that was produced by the General Motors marque Pontiac from the 2001 model year to the 2005 model year. The Aztek was mostly noteworthy for its exterior styling, for which it has been voted the ugliest car in the world by a British newspaper[1]. The Aztek was the first “crossover” SUV offered from General Motors.

Given the fact that the vast majority of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) were rarely taken off-pavement by their owners, much less driven under serious off-road conditions, a new type of car-based “crossover SUV” was marketed that was hoped would provide all the elements that customers actually wanted from their SUVs such as cargo carrying capacity, elevated seating height and the suggestion of an active outdoor lifestyle with fewer of the drawbacks typically associated with traditional SUVs such as poor gas mileage, uncomfortable ride, high step-in height, propensity to roll over, etc.

First shown to the public in 1999, the Pontiac Aztek concept car was fairly well received.[2] It featured “Xtreme” futuristic styling and promised maximum versatility in support of a young and active lifestyle for its intended Generation ‘X’ buyer demographic.

The production edition of the Aztek was launched with the tagline: “Quite possibly the most versatile vehicle on the planet.” in conjunction with CBS’s hit game show, Survivor in 2000.[3]

The Pontiac Bonneville was an automobile built by the Pontiac division of General Motors from 1957 to 2005. It was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year. The Bonneville (known as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 19 feet (5.8 m) long, and were also some of the heaviest produced cars at the time (2.5 tons, or 5,000 lb (2,300 kg)).

The Bonneville name first appeared in 1954 on a pair of bubble-topped GM Motorama concept cars called the Bonneville Special. It entered the production lineup as a high-performance, fuel-injected luxury convertible in the 1957 model year and was loaded with every conceivable option as standard equipment with the exception of optional air conditioning. This put the Bonneville in a Cadillac-like price range of $5,000 – more than double the base price of a Chieftain four-door sedan. A fully equipped Bonneville could cost more than a Cadillac. Only 630 units were produced that first year, making it one of the most collectible Pontiacs of all time. The Bonneville endured until 2005 as the division’s top-of-the-line model. The name was taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the site of much early auto racing and most of the world’s land speed record runs.

The Bonneville added a coupe in 1958, and it paced the Indianapolis 500 that year. This year’s Bonneville had a significantly lower price tag of around $3,000 thanks to the demotion of most of the luxury items found on the ’57 model from standard equipment to the option list. Also a 300 horsepower (220 kW) 370 cubic inches (6,100 cc) V8 with four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts was now standard equipment. The fuel-injection system offered with the standard engine on the ’57 model was now listed as an extra cost option but very few ’58 Bonnevilles were so equipped due to a towering price tag of over $500 USD, which was not considered a very good value considering that for less than $100 USD, a Tri-Power option was available with three two-barrel carburetors and even more power.

In its third year, the 1959 Bonneville became a full top-line series with the addition of the four-door hardtop sedan and Safari station wagon body styles. The Bonneville played an important part that year in the introduction of two of Pontiac’s greatest marketing inspirations — the split grille and the Wide Track slogan. The latter was not just ad copy, either, as Pontiac pushed its wheels further out toward the fenders than anyone else and created what were considered to be the best-cornering full-size cars in the industry. Both the grille design and the Wide Track phrase are still part of Pontiac’s image today. The Bonneville remained as Pontiac’s costliest and most luxurious model throughout the 1960s and was instrumental in pushing Pontiac to third place in sales from 1962 to 1970.

The Pontiac Firebird was built by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year as its platform-sharing cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. This coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which shared its platform with another pony car, the Ford Mustang.

The vehicles were, for the most part, powered by various V8 engines of different GM divisions. While primarily Pontiac-powered until 1977, Firebirds were built with several different engines from nearly every GM division until 1982 when all Pontiac engines were dropped in favor of corporate units.

The first generation Firebirds had a characteristic “coke-bottle” styling. Unlike its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro, its bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end and its rear “slit” taillights were inspired by the Pontiac GTO. Both a two-door hardtop coupe and a convertible were offered through the 1970 model year (the next generation, minus the convertible, being announced as 1970½ models). Originally the car was a “consolation prize” for Pontiac, who had initially wished to produce a two-seat sports car of its own design, based on the original Banshee concept car. However, GM feared such a vehicle would directly compete with Chevrolet’s Corvette, and the decision was made to give Pontiac a piece of the pony car market by having them share the F-body platform with Chevrolet. Somewhat disappointed at management’s decision, Pontiac went about re-making the F-body in their own image with both styling and engineering changes.

The base model Firebird came equipped with the OHC inline-6 and a single-barrel carburetor. The next model, the Sprint, had a four-barrel carburetor, developing 215 hp (160 kW). But most buyers opted for one of the V8 engines: the 326 CID (5.3 L) with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250 hp (186 kW); the “H.O.” (High Output) engine of the same displacement, but with a four-barrel carburetor and producing 285 hp (213 kW); or the 400 CID (6.6 L) from the GTO with 325 hp (242 kW). A “Ram Air” option was also available in 1968, providing functional hood scoops, higher flow heads with stronger valve springs, and a different camshaft. Power for the Ram Air package was the same as the conventional 400 H.O., but the engine peaked at a higher RPM. The 230 CID (3.8 L) engines were subsequently replaced by 250 CID (4.1 L) ones, the first developing 175 hp (130 kW) using a single barrel carburetor, and the other a 215 hp (160 kW) engine with a four-barrel carburetor. Also for the 1968 model, the 326 CID (5.3 L) engine was replaced by one with a displacement of 350 CID (5.7 L). An “H.O.” version of the 350 CID with a revised cam was also offered starting in that year, developed 320 hp. Power output of the other engines was increased marginally. In 1969, a $725 optional handling package called the “Trans Am Performance and Appearance Package,”, named after the Trans Am Series, which included a rear spoiler, was introduced. Of these first “Trans Ams,” only 689 hardtops and eight convertibles were made. There was an additional Ram Air IV option for the 400 CID engine during that year, complementing the Ram Air III; these generated 345 and 335 hp respectively. The 350 “H.O.” engine was revised again with a different cam and cylinder heads resulting in 330 hp. During 1969 a special 303 cu in (5 L) engine was designed for SCCA road racing applications that was not available in production cars.[1]

Bodywise, the styling difference from the 1967 to the 1968 model was the addition of Federally-mandated side marker lights: for the front of the car, the blinkers were made larger and extended to wrap around the front edges of the car, and on the rear, the Pontiac (V-shaped) Arrowhead logo was added to each side. Also, Pontiac stopped using wing-windows and started using single panes on the doors. The 1969 model received a major facelift with a new front end design made of an Endura bumper housing the headlights and grilles. Inside, there was a revised instrument panel and steering wheel. Also, the ignition switch was moved from the dashboard to the steering column with the introduction of GM’s new locking ignition switch/steering wheel.

Due to engineering problems that would ultimately delay introduction of the all-new 1970 Firebird beyond the usual fall debut, Pontiac continued production of 1969-model Firebirds into the early months of the 1970 model year — until the end of calendar year 1969 (the other 1970 Pontiac models had been introduced on September 18, 1969). In fact, by late spring of 1969, Pontiac had deleted all model-year references on Firebird literature and promotional materials, anticipating the extended production run of the then-current 1969 models.

The Pontiac G5 is a rebadged Chevrolet Cobalt compact car marketed by the Pontiac division of General Motors. It was first introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. For 2005 and early 2006, this car was known as the Pontiac Pursuit in the Canadian market, and G5 Pursuit during mid-2006. It was also known as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico from 2005-2006. It was released to the U.S. market in August 2006 as a 2007 model. The G5 and Cobalt are built upon the GM Delta platform and is available as a sedan in Canada and Mexico. In the United States, the G5 is only available as a coupe.

The independent front suspension has MacPherson struts, while the semi-independent rear suspension uses torsion bars. The wheelbase is 103.3 in (262.4 cm), longer than its competitors, and the width is 68.4 in (173.8 cm). Weight is high at 2808–2989 lb (1273–1355 kg), and overall fuel economy is 23 mpg (10 L/100 km). The car is notable for its use of electric power steering, rather than the conventional hydraulic type. It is built at General Motors’ Lordstown Assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio.

Engines:

In the US, the G5 is available in the base model coupe (with a 148 hp (110 kW), 2.2 L I4 engine) and the sporty GT (173 hp, DOHC 2.4 L four-cylinder engine) trim levels. Standard equipment for the coupe trim level includes a 5-speed manual transmission, AM/FM stereo system with MP3 decoder, auxiliary jack for external music devices (such as an iPod), and a spoiler. The first 500 G5′s built for the US market included a free upgrade to XM Radio, and free song downloads from Rhapsody. The GT includes the same equipment. Available options for both trim levels include a sunroof and side impact airbags. The coupe lists for US$14,995 while the GT is slightly more expensive, starting at US$17,795. [1] For 2009, the G5 will drop the 2.4 L engine for the GT trim level. Instead, the new base engine, the 2.2 L Ecotec LAP, will be used for both trim levels.

The Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car produced under the Pontiac brand of American automaker General Motors. It was introduced in the fall of 2004 to replace the Grand Am.[1] The car is built off the GM Epsilon platform which it shares with the Chevrolet Malibu and Saab 9-3 along with other General Motors vehicles. Styling was redone in a more conservative fashion, and the ribbed cladding and rear spoiler that were prevalent on the Grand Am was replaced by standard sheet metal.[2] New features included a remote starting system as well as a panoramic sunroof option.

For 2005, two trims were offered, base and GT. Both came standard with the 3500 V6 engine that produced 200 horsepower (150 kW). The engine is matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. Trim levels grew in 2006, when a coupe and convertible version were added. The GTP and new base model were added. The base model used a 2.4L Ecotec I4 engine that produced 169 horsepower (126 kW). The GTP was added as the top of the line model, with a 240 hp 3.9L V6 engine. This engine could be ordered with a six-speed manual transmission. The convertible used a 227 horsepower (169 kW) version, due to a different exhaust system.

In 2007, the 3.5L V6 was given Variable Valve Timing (VVT), which increased power to 224 hp (167 kW). The 3.9L and six-speed transmission were moved as an option on the GT, when the GTP received a new 252 horsepower, 3.6L High Feature V6 with DOHC and 24-Valves. The GTP only featured a six-speed automatic transmission. The 3.9L was soon dropped on coupes and sedans and made optional on the convertible only. The six-speed manual transmission was dropped altogether in mid-2007. In 2008, the GTP was replaced by a GXP model, adding to Pontiac’s increasing GXP lineup. Other than styling changes, the GXP was the same as the GTP. The 3.5 and 3.9 V6 engines received a drop in rated power due to SAE ratings. Power was rated at 217 hp (162 kW) and 222 hp (166 kW), respectively.

Models with the four-cylinder Ecotec engine see the option of a six-speed automatic transmission, similar to that found in the new Chevrolet Malibu for the 2009 model year. The G6 also received a refreshed front fascia as well as updated switchgear for the 2009 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Pontiac G6 an overall Good score in the frontal offset crash test[3] but an Average score in the side impact crash test even though newer model year G6′s feature standard side airbags. In the IIHS’s side impact test the G6 receives a Marginal score for the structure/safety cage category.[4]
