The Oldsmobile Achieva was introduced in 1992 and was a front-wheel drive compact car based on the GM N platform with Pontiac Grand Am, Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Cutlass, and Chevrolet Malibu. The Achieva replaced the Cutlass Calais during its final model year in 1991, which was also on the GM N platform. The Achieva was available as a sedan and a coupe. It also had 4 trim levels; S, SC, SL, and SCX. The SCX was a high performance version of the SC. It came equipped with the highest output naturally aspirated four cylinder engine GM has ever produced, the W41. This engine was complimented by a specially built Getrag 5-speed with a special differential that transferred torque to the wheel with the most traction. The engines available were the high output version of the 2.3 L Quad 4 (LGO), low output version of the Quad 4 2.3 L Quad 4 (LD2) and the 3.1 L V6. The Achieva was last sold to dealerships in 1997, with leftover ’97 sedans being sold to rental fleets for 1998, until being replaced by the Alero in 1999.

The Achieva was first seen as a concept car at the 1991 Chicago Auto Show that was said to replace the Calais because they both share the same front wheel drive and same wheelbase of platform. The following year, the Achieva was part of the production line of the Oldsmobile. It was offered in four different trims: S and SL that were both available in two and four-door model, and the sporty SC and SCX coupe. The S as the standard model has a 120-horsepower 2.3-liter OHC 4-cylinder. The SL on the other hand houses the 160 horsepower (120 kW) engine that is made optional to the S model. 160-horsepower 3.3 L V6 engine was optional for the SL. The SC coupe has the 180 horsepower (130 kW) with 5-speed manual transmission or a 3 speed automatic. An interesting feature, exclusive to the Achieva sedan, was the presence of rear fender skirts. While still a common design element at the time, they were usually only on larger cars, not compacts. The similar Buick Skylark sedan and coupe also had rear fender skirts.

After a year, the Achieva reduces its power due to the stricter emission controls. All trims were 5 horsepower (3.7 kW) lower at automatic transmission. The next year gave the entry of the driver-side airbag as one of the standard features. The 3.3 L version was reduced to a 3.1 L V6. All 1994 models are automatic transmissions.

In 1995 all Achieva trims are reduced to one: S coupe and sedan, which is divided into two groups according to equipment: Series I and Series II. Driver-side airbag, antilock brakes, and an air conditioner are standard to every version. Quad 4 with 150 horsepower (110 kW) and 3.1-liter V6 with 155 horsepower (116 kW) are only available engines for the 1995 model, the other two from the previews years are dropped.

The 1996 models add more features including an all-new interior, standard air conditioning, daytime running lamps, and a new dash panel featuring revised gauges with passenger-side airbag. The new base engine is the 2.4 L 4-cylinder (Twin Cam) that replaces the 2.3-liter Quad 4. The final year of the Achieva came as soon as its entry. In 1997, its last production was made. The Oldsmobile Achieva was soon replaced by the Oldsmobile Alero.

The Oldsmobile Alero was introduced in spring 1998 as a 1999 model to replace the Achieva and Cutlass. The Alero went into production on April 6, 1998. All Aleros were built in Lansing, Michigan. The Alero was Oldsmobile’s last compact car as well as the last vehicle sold under the brand. Production ended on April 28, 2004.

The design of the Alero was originally previewed in 1997 with the Alero Alpha concept car, a futuristic V6-powered sport coupe that featured many design elements seen in the production Alero as well as some that were never meant for production.

The Alero was sold either as a 4-door sedan or as a 2-door coupé. It shared its chassis and many parts, including engines, with the Pontiac Grand Am, the other compact N body sedan. All Aleros came in base GX, mid-level GL, or high-end GLS trim; GL trim was split into three levels: 1, 2, and 3.

The Alero experienced minimal changes during its 5-year run. Most of these changes were either in choice of engines or options. In 2003, the Alero’s daytime running lights were changed from high-beam to low-beam.

The Alero was also sold in select European countries as the Chevrolet Alero, although only available as a sedan. The car still featured its Oldsmobile badges even though sold under the Chevrolet brand, since most European consumers would not recognize what the badge stood for. Chevrolet badges were added to the grille and rear fascia during the 2000 model year. Since the phase-out of the Alero, it was replaced in Europe and Canada by the GM Daewoo-sourced Chevrolet Evanda/Epica.

Alero production ended with a special Final 500 Edition. These last 500 Aleros featured custom graphics inspired by vintage Oldsmobile logos, dark cherry metallic paint, and a plate featuring the car’s number out of 500.

The Oldsmobile Aurora is a mid-size sedan made by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and launched in 1995. The Aurora rode on the same Cadillac-derived G platform as the 2-door Buick Riviera.

With the demise of the Ninety-Eight in 1996, the Aurora became the flagship Oldsmobile. A V6-powered version was introduced in 2001 as supplanttation for the Eighty-Eight and the LSS.

Since the 1980s GM had wanted a new car to bring new life to Oldsmobile, a car that was “not your father’s Oldsmobile”; thus the Aurora was born, with several styling cues taken from the 1960s Oldsmobile Toronado.[1] By the time the Aurora was released, Oldsmobile badly needed the Aurora, in hopes for a comeback of the marque (Oldsmobile sales had plummeted from 1,066,122 in 1985, to just 389,173 in 1992). As a symbol of its clean break from other cars in the lineup, the Aurora bore no Oldsmobile badging or script save for the cassette deck and engine cover. Instead, a new emblem consisting of a stylized ‘A’ was used, foreshadowing a similar restyling of Oldsmobile’s corporate ‘Rocket’ emblem for 1997.[2]

With the Aurora, Oldsmobile tried to ride the praise of the car by launching other models that borrowed styling cues from the Aurora such as the Intrigue and Alero, as well as the redesigned Eighty-Eight, Silhouette, Cutlass, and Bravada. The Oldsmobile “rocket” logo was even updated to be more in-line with the Aurora’s emblem. Because of this, a rumor started circulating at the time that the name of the whole Oldsmobile marque would be changed to simply “Aurora.”[citation needed]

Early design work on what would become the Aurora began as early as the late 1980s and manifested itself with a 1989 engineering concept known as the Oldsmobile Tube Car. Beyond the overall similar shape, the Tube Car featured many detailed elements that were later found on the production automobile, including a full-width taillamp, wraparound rear windshield, and frameless windows. Unlike the eventual production car, the Tube Car was of a pillarless hardtop design with suicide doors.[3]

The Oldsmobile Bravada was a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) from the now retired Oldsmobile marque of General Motors. There have been two different vehicles to bear this model name, the first and second-generation GMT330, and the 2002 to 2004 GMT360.

The third generation model was the only one offered in Canada.

The 1991 Bravada was an upscale version of the then-new 4-door S-Blazer/Jimmy. It was the first truck-based vehicle offered by Oldsmobile since the 1920s, and by that time was a United States-only vehicle. Unlike its siblings, the Bravada was only offered with “Smart Trak” all-wheel drive, leather upholstery, power equipment, and the 4.3 L Z-code engine. At the heart of Smart Trak system was the Borg Warner 4472 transfer case, offering 65% rear and 35% front torque with more to the front when it slips. Anti-lock brakes and remote keyless entry were also standard.

The 4.3 L engine got a horsepower boost to 200 for 1992. Also for ’92, the Bravada’s instrument panel was slightly modified to differ from its siblings. 1993 saw the addition of an overhead console with compass, temperature, and reading lights. An optional Gold package with gold exterior badging and special gold aluminum wheels was also new for ’93. This version was produced through 1994.

The Oldsmobile Cutlass is an automobile made by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors. The Cutlass was introduced in 1961 as a unibody compact car.

Over the years, the Cutlass name was in effect used by Oldsmobile as a sub-marque, with a number of different vehicles bearing the name simultaneously. The Cutlass name accumulated great brand equity and became one of the most popular nameplates in the industry in the 1970s.[citation needed] However, the proliferation of Oldsmobile Cutlass models caused confusion in the marketplace in the 1980s,[citation needed] when four different vehicles bore the name: the Cutlass Calais compact, the midsize Cutlass Ciera, the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and the Cutlass Supreme personal luxury car.

The first Oldsmobile Cutlass was an experimental sports coupe designed in 1954. It rode a 110 in (2794 mm) wheelbase, and had a dramatic fastback roofline, with a stock Oldsmobile V8 engine. Its platform was quite similar to the later compact Olds F-85, which was not introduced for seven more years.

General Motors began developing its first compact cars in 1956, beginning with the Chevrolet Corvair. The following year a second series of somewhat larger cars was planned for Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac, what would be termed “senior compacts.” They would share the same body shell and lightweight engine. Oldsmobile designer Irving Rybicki began work on the Olds model in 1957. It finally went on sale in 1960 as a 1961 model.

The Oldsmobile, dubbed F-85, shared a new A-body platform, using a 112 inch (2845 mm) wheelbase and still-novel unibody construction, with the Buick Special and Pontiac Tempest. It was Oldsmobile’s smallest, cheapest model — some two feet (60 cm) shorter and $451 cheaper than the next-smallest Olds. The F-85 had double wishbone front suspension and a four-link live axle in the rear, suspended with coil springs all around. Standard engine was the new small V8, all aluminum, displacing 215 cu. in. (3.5 L). With a two-barrel carburetor, it was rated 155 bhp (115.6 kW) and 210 lb·ft (284.7 N·m). Transmission options were initially three-speed manual or the newly introduced three-speed Roto Hydramatic. The F-85 had drum brakes of 9.5 in (241 mm) diameter. Overall length was initially 188.2 in (4780 mm), and curb weight was around 2,800 lb (1,270 kg).

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera was a mid-size car produced from 1982 through 1996 at the Oklahoma City plant, the Saint Therese Assembly plant (until 1991) Framingham, Massachusetts, the Fremont, California plant (1982 only) and Doraville, Georgia plant for the Oldsmobile division of General Motors. It shared the front-wheel drive GM A platform, which was based on the earlier X platform, with the very similar Buick Century, Pontiac 6000 and Chevrolet Celebrity, during those years. Available bodystyles included a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon (added in 1984). Between 1983 and 1986, 814 Cutlass Ciera convertibles were made by Hess & Eisenhardt/Car Craft. During the 1986 model year, the coupe received a new, more rounded roofline that was not shared with the other A-body models. At the same time as the Cutlass Ciera, Oldsmobile produced two other different Cutlass models, the smaller Cutlass Calais and the larger Cutlass Supreme. The Cutlass Ciera was a modern redesign of Oldsmobile’s famous Cutlass line. Sales were strong and the car enjoyed many factory specialty models including Holiday coupe, GT, and International models, the latter of which had a stock body kit. For 1996, the Cutlass name was dropped and the car was simply called the Ciera. This generation was exported to certain countries in Asia. Throughout much of the 90s, it was ranked as the most stolen vehicle.

The Cutlass Ciera was updated for 1989, with the sedan receiving a new more modern roofline, and both coupe and sedan models wore updated rear-end treatments (the 1989/1990 taillights were Oldsmobile-themed – squared with a center emblem, and 1991 to 1996 models had a revised three-sectioned taillight lens similar to the Ford Mustang). For 1992, the coupe, along with the sporty International Series models, were dropped. In 1996, the final model year, the cars dropped the Cutlass name and were known simply as Ciera. The Ciera was popular with rental fleets. Production of the Ciera ended on August 30, 1996, and it was replaced in the U.S. by the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass, also built at the Oklahoma plant. This Cutlass was not sold in Canada, leaving the new Intrigue as Oldsmobile’s only mid-size offering there.

In 1988 the Ciera was featured as a pace car. GM released a limited edition version which included a factory sport appearance kit. A more aerodynamic front bumper, side skirts and dual exhaust.

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was a mid-size car produced by General Motors for the American market. It was always at the top of the Cutlass range. It began as a trim package, developed its own roofline, and eventually was mechanically divorced from the later, smaller Cutlasses.

The Cutlass Supreme name lasted from 1966 until 1997. There was no direct replacement for the Cutlass Supreme itself, although the Intrigue introduced for 1998 was designed in size and price to replace all the Cutlass models.

The name first appeared in 1966, the first year of GM’s new intermediate four-door hardtop sedan – also known as the Holiday Sedan. In addition to the new body style (also available on the midline F-85 Deluxe series), the Supreme featured a plusher interior that included a notchback bench seat with armrest, full wheel covers and deluxe door panels among other items including “CS” emblems on the rear C-pillars and trunk lid.

The Cutlass Supreme was only offered as a four-door hardtop sedan (Holiday Sedan) in 1966. For 1967, the Cutlass Supreme line was expanded into a full series that also included a two-door hardtop coupe (Holiday Coupe), two-door pillared coupe (Sport Coupe), four-door pillared sedan (Town Sedan) and a convertible. Generally, interior appointments in Supreme models were more luxurious that lesser F-85 and Cutlass series cars and included a cloth or vinyl notchback bench seat with armrest in sedan models and all-vinyl Strato bucket seats in coupes and convertibles.

For both years, the standard Supreme engine was Oldsmobile’s 330 cubic-inch “Ultra High Compression” Jetfire Rocket V8 rated at 320 hp (239 kW) with a four-barrel carburetor with transmission offerings including a standard three-speed manual with column shift, floor-mounted four-speed manual with Hurst shifter or a two-speed Jetaway automatic.

In 1967, the 400 cubic-inch 350 horsepower V8 used in the Oldsmobile 442 was made available as an option on the Supreme coupes and convertibles only. Also available was a more economical 400 cubic-inch V8 with a two-barrel carburetor and 300 hp (220 kW) rating along with a numerically lower rear axle and Turbo Hydramatic transmission as part of a “Turnpike Cruiser” option designed for high-speed highway cruising.

The Oldsmobile Intrigue was a mid-size sedan manufactured from 1998 through 2002 by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors. The Intrigue’s design cues were first seen in 1995 with the Oldsmobile Antares concept car. The Intrigue was the first casualty in the phase-out process of Oldsmobile. Upon the demise of the Oldsmobile division in 2004, it was replaced by the new Buick LaCrosse (which was styled by the same Designer that did the Intrigue) the following year, in 2005.

The Aurora-inspired Intrigue was designed to compete more with Japanese automobiles, and replaced the aging Cutlass Supreme. It went into production on May 5, 1997. It was similar to a range of mid-sized sedans from other GM divisions, including the Buick Century, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the Pontiac Grand Prix. The Intrigue was available in three trim levels: base GX, mid-level GL, and high-end GLS.

All Intrigues were built at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, where the Grand Prix was also built (the Buick Century and Regal, and the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo were all built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada). For the 1999 model year, a new, sophisticated DOHC 3.5L “Shortstar” engine, a six-cylinder based on the GM Northstar V8, was introduced. On June 14, 2002, the final Intrigue rolled off the assembly line, as part of the Final 500 Collectors Edition. The 3.5L engine became standard from 2000-2002, the Intrigue was the only W-body car GM had offered with the most standard engine power. Both engine’s gave the car near identical performance the 3.5 intrigue would jump on the 3.8 Intrigue in a roll over 30mph due to its DOHC nature.

The Oldsmobile Silhouette and its siblings, the Pontiac Trans Sport (and later, the Pontiac Montana) and Chevrolet Lumina APV (and later, the Chevrolet Venture), were a trio of minivans that débuted in late 1989 as 1990 models. Upon the demise of the Oldsmobile division in 2004, it was replaced by the newly designed Buick Terraza the following year, in 2005.

The first generation Silhouette was prominently featured in the 1995 film Get Shorty where it was repeatedly referred to as “The Cadillac of minivans”. GM’s attempt of releasing their first FWD minivans in 1990 pursued the company to create one of the very-first luxury minivans, however, at the same time, Chrysler released the Town & Country minivan.

General Motors first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to make a noticeable dent in Chrysler’s near monopoly of the minivan market in the 1980s, so this second attempt was made. The Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, while more successful than the Astro/Safari duo in terms of market share, had significant perceived flaws, primarily centered around its unconventional styling that ultimately limited its appeal and sales.

First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car was extremely well received. It featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof as well as many other “dream car” features.

Based on the warm reception the concept vehicle received, the Pontiac Trans Sport was approved for production, but as is often the case, the styling and features showcased on the concept did not make the translation to the mass-produced edition.The gullwing door was deemed too expensive to produce and would probably have impacted overhead garage doors in suburban garages. The glass roof was too heavy and too expensive, so the resultant production vehicle made-do with high-gloss black painted panels for the roof to suggest the glass canopy the concept sported.

Chevrolet and Oldsmobile were also given production vehicles based on the Trans Sport in order to cover the widest possible range of potential customers. It was intended that the Lumina APV would be the value-priced version, The Trans Sport would net the more “sport & style” oriented buyers, and the Silhouette would be the minivan for the premium, luxury market.
