It’s a balancing act that would test a Cirque du Soleil performer: the task of redesigning a popular vehicle without diluting its appeal by making it too different. Such was the challenge Nissan faced when it decided to revamp its popular Murano midsize crossover SUV as an early 2009 model year release.

The first-generation Murano (it debuted back in 2004) was known for its sporty styling and sharp handling. For that first quality, not much changed for the new 2009 Nissan Murano. At a glance, especially in profile, one might have trouble discerning the new model from its predecessor. The same kicked-up beltline and triangular rearmost side windows remain, as does the general silhouette. The face is more aggressive, however, with its rather strange grille that incorporates squinty headlights. The tail retains the unique back window design (that’s thankfully a bit bigger) but takes on new, more horizontal taillights.

It’s also more of the same in regards to handling ability. Part of the old Murano’s handling credentials came about as it shared some lineage with Nissan’s athletic Altima sedan. The 2009 Murano continues that trend, though it’s now related to the latest-generation Altima that recently debuted. Meanwhile, the peppy 3.5-liter “VQ Series” V6, already highly regarded, gains 25 horsepower for a total of 265, while the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) — one of the old model’s more disappointing qualities — has been tweaked for sharper response.

What we notice the most on the 2009 Nissan Murano is the much nicer cabin. Inside, higher-quality materials and an upscale ambience replace the mediocre quality and avant-garde look of the previous interior. New features like a hard-drive-based navigation system and a dedicated iPod interface are also part of the redesign. One thing that didn’t change, however, is the lack of a third-row seat. No doubt, Nissan’s designers felt pressure to add one, as it’s offered on most other competing models. But in a (logical) show of defiance, Nissan felt a third row would be rather small and take up valuable cargo space, especially considering that the Murano is on the smaller side of the midsize crossover segment to begin with.

If you’re interested in this type of vehicle, you’ll find that there are more choices than ever this year. There are larger models to think about, such as the Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Highlander. But the most direct rival to this Nissan is Mazda’s CX-7, as its fun-to-drive factor rates even higher than the Murano’s. However, the CX-7 does give up some practicality due to its relatively meager maximum cargo space, and some may find its turbocharged four-cylinder a little too head-snapping for comfort. Other similar choices include the Ford Edge, the Mitsubishi Outlander V6, the Pontiac Torrent GXP and the Toyota RAV4 V6. These models typically offer more cargo space or passenger capacity, but they don’t offer the same level of athleticism, interior refinement or flair that Nissan’s star performer does.

We can already hear the complaints: “I am not paying $36,000 for a Nissan sedan.” We understand. For that kind of money, you could be driving an Infiniti, a BMW or even a Mercedes. They must be smokin’ something interesting at Nissan’s Tennessee headquarters, right? Well, they’re not as nutty as you may think, as the all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima is a high-quality entry-level luxury sedan that is well worth the fair amount of cash Nissan’s charging for it. In fact, when fully loaded, it undercuts similarly equipped luxury-badged sedans by thousands, while in some cases being dynamically superior.

While wrapped in sharp, unique styling, the ’09 Maxima was put together using the best bits and pieces found in the Nissan and Infiniti warehouses. The basic front-wheel-drive architecture comes from the sporty Altima midsize sedan; however, its length was reduced and width increased to improve handling. Nissan’s ubiquitous 3.5-liter V6 shows up yet again, in this case with an ample 290 horsepower on tap. The Altima’s excellent continuously variable transmission (CVT) is the lone transmission choice, but in the Maxima’s SV trim, it comes with metal paddle shifters that control artificial transmission “gear” ratios. The low-friction, high-feel power steering is similar to the Altima too, but once again, it was upgraded to provide a more driver-focused feel.

Inside, the Maxima is an analog clock and fancier gauges away from being 100 percent Infiniti. Materials and construction are thus as good as or better than those on a G35, while the same sort of high-tech and high-lux equipment is available — from one of the best iPod integration systems available to a cooled driver seat. Interior space is actually a smidgen less than the Altima, so don’t expect the range-topping Maxima to be some sort of full-size Avalon competitor.

As long as you can live without “oohs” and “ahs” from the neighbors, the 2009 Nissan Maxima should be on the must-look list of any luxury-car buyer searching for something in the 30-grand range — particularly something that offers foul-weather-friendly front-wheel drive. Vehicles that offer a similar amount of high-tech equipment for a low price include the Acura TSX and TL, Hyundai Genesis and Volkswagen Passat. Vehicles that offer less equipment when similarly priced, but feature more driving fun and/or brand cachet, include the Audi A4, Infiniti G35 and Lexus IS. We think the Maxima stacks up well with any of these choices, but where it ultimately stands depends on your definition of a luxury car — or in other words, how much you’re willing to throw down for a Nissan sedan.

Technically, the 2009 Nissan GT-R isn’t a Skyline — that distinction now belongs to what we know as the Infiniti G series, which is marketed as the Nissan Skyline in Japan. But don’t let the official nomenclature fool you. From its familiar twin-turbocharged engine and all-wheel-drive layout to its telltale circular taillights, there’s no mistaking the new Nissan for anything but a modern-day Skyline GT-R.

The big deal for Americans is that the 2009 GT-R marks the first time this legendary performance car will be officially sold stateside. We also happen to be getting the most ambitious version yet. The great-granddaddy of the new GT-R, the “Godzilla” R32 Skyline GT-R produced from 1989-’93, was designed to equal the performance of the iconic Porsche 959. Nissan’s benchmark for the 2009 GT-R? The mighty Porsche 997-series 911 Turbo.

That’s a tall order under any circumstances, but Nissan’s President and CEO, Carlos Ghosn, sent the degree of difficulty skyrocketing when he agreed to green-light the GT-R project on two conditions: first, the base price had to be about $70,000; and second, the car had to be profitable, i.e., not merely an image-boosting “halo car” that would be sold at a loss. Improbably, the GT-R has succeeded on all counts. Ghosn’s conditions have been met, and we can confirm that the 2009 Nissan GT-R is indeed a match for its Bavarian benchmark at the track. Never before has such stratospheric factory performance been available at such a reasonable price; in fact, you’d have to look long and hard to match the GT-R’s performance at any price.

How does the GT-R do it? As far as that bargain-basement price tag is concerned, we’d put it down to a mixture of modern mass-production techniques and magic. Performance-wise, the gnarly Nissan has a long list of co-conspirators to thank, among them a 473-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6, a thoroughly revised version of the previous GT-R’s ATTESA ET-S all-wheel-drive system, a trick suspension with adjustable dampers and a dual-clutch transmission that ranks right up there with the best in the business.

Credit also goes to the GT-R’s all-new PM (“Premium Midship”) chassis, as distinguished from the FM platform that underpins the 350Z and the Infiniti G35. The GT-R’s 53/47 weight distribution (50/50 under full acceleration, Nissan says) is due in part to the PM chassis’ rear-mounted transmission, unusual in any case for a front-engine design — only the Corvette and a few other high-end performance cars have one — but unprecedented for one with all-wheel drive. What’s more, to guard against inconsistencies from one GT-R to the next, the car’s suspension and body are assembled on a jig, racecar style. The result is an honest-to-goodness supercar — except for the bottom line.

The SX name refers to several models of automobile sold by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. around the world. Beginning in 1974, the “200SX” badging was utilized until 2002.

The history of the “200SX” begins in the Nissan Silvia line, which started in 1964 with the CSP311 2-seat coupe (last produced in 1968). When the Silvia was revived in the 1970s as a two-plus-two coupe to compete with the Toyota Celica, it was introduced in some countries as the “200SX”. This references the displacement in the engine: 2.0 litres. Other similar Nissan badging also refers to engine displacement, most notably the Datsun 240Z (2.4L) and its successive car line, all the way to the present incarnation — the Nissan 350Z.

The S10 was the first Silvia built on the Nissan S platform. It featured more “traditional” lines than similar offerings from rivals Toyota and Mazda and was summarily less popular with consumers in most markets. In Japan it was fitted with an L18B engine, which it shared with the Datsun 610/Bluebird 180B. In the North American market a version incorporating the larger-displacement L20B was offered as the 200B of the same series Bluebird. This model was affixed with the mandated 5 mph (8.0 km/h) bumpers and badged as the Datsun 200SX. Its success in both markets was limited, most buyers opting for the Celica over what was considered the more mundane S-Chassis.

The Nissan 240SX was a car introduced to the North American market by Nissan in 1989. It replaced the 200SX (RWD) in 1989. The 240SX was equipped with a 2.4-litre inline 4 engine, rear wheel drive. (KA24E from 1989–1990 and KA24DE from 1991–1998). Two distinct generations of the 240SX, the S13 (1989-1994) and the S14 (1995-1998), were produced from the Nissan S platform. The 240SX is closely related to other S vehicles: the Japanese-market Silvia and 180SX and the European-market 200SX.

The first generation of the 240SX can be divided into two distinct variants: Zenki (“early period” in Japanese and commonly known as “pignose” to US 240sx enthusiasts) and Chuki (translated to “middle period” in Japanese). Each of these variants came in two distinct body styles: hatchback (base and SE) and coupe (base, SE, and XE). Nissan marketing and documentation almost exclusively used the term “fastback” but some people believe it is not truly a fastback but is a hatchback. Both styles shared the same front bodywork as the Japanese-market Nissan 180SX, which was a hatchback, and featured the sloping front and pop-up headlights. This bodywork distinguishes the coupe model from its Japanese-market counterpart, the Silvia, which featured fixed headlights. Both styles, and all markets, share the same chassis, and with few exceptions, most components and features are identical.

The Zenki (??, lit. preceding period) was sold under model years 1989 through 1990. It was powered by a 140 hp (105 kW) 2.4-litre SOHC KA24E engine with 3 valves per cylinder instead of the 1.8-litre DOHC I4 CA18 (offered in Japan and Europe during these years), with no turbocharged engine available in the United States. Four-wheel disc brakes were standard, with antilock brakes as an option on the SE. Both models were offered with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. “Coupes” offered a Head-Up Display showing a digital speedometer as part of the optional Power Convenience Group.

The Chuki (??, lit. middle period) was available from model years 1991 to 1994. This gave the car an overhaul that included mostly minor body modifications and an upgrade to the engine. The Zenki front bumper was replaced by a smoother, more modern-looking bumper, and a new (LE) hatchback trim package was added that included leather interior. The SOHC KA24E was replaced by a new DOHC KA24DE with 4 valves per cylinder that produced 15 more hp, for a total output of 155 hp (116 kW). An optional sports package including a limited slip differential and Nissan’s HICAS four wheel steering was added to the hatchback. In Canada, a VLSD (viscous limited slip differential) was standard on all cars.

In 1992, a convertible body style was added to the lineup. It was exclusive to North America and was partially assembled in Japan, with final assembly taking place in the California facilities of American Specialty Cars (ASC).

For the 1994 model year, the only available car was a Special Edition of the Convertible body style with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
