Based on a concept car called the C-XF (“C” for concept), the 2009 XF is a midsize four-door that will replace the Jaguar S-Type. Dealers are already taking orders for the XF, which goes on sale in March 2008. Competing models, in size and/or price, include the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac STS, Lexus GS sedan and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The Jaguar S-Type, introduced at the 1998 Birmingham Motor Show, was a mid-size luxury/executive car. The car went on sale 1999. The name was a revival of a previous Jaguar model, the S-Type introduced in 1963, while the bodywork appeared to have been inspired by the Jaguar Mark 2 of the same period.

The S-Type was produced at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich facility in Birmingham, England. The car was styled by the late Geoff Lawson and is based on the Jaguar DEW platform/Ford DEW platform, which it shared with the now out-of-production Lincoln LS, but with substantial modifications.

The supercharged S-Type R joined the lineup in 2003, and the hope was that it would compete with BMW’s M5 and the Mercedes E55 AMG. The “R” was powered by a supercharged V8 producing 400 hp (300 kW; 410 PS) and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.3 s (0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 s). It included 18 in (457 mm) alloy wheels, wire-mesh grille and dramatic monochromatic paint. The “R” also has a sportier rear apron, side-skirts, and front apron with built-in fog-lamps, a rear spoiler, a brace located near the rear subframe, and “R” badging on the boot lid and both front wings. It was the most expensive S-Type, with a base price of £50,040 in the UK [1] (US$58,995 in the United States).

Also added for 2003 model was an electronic parking-brake paddle-switch, which replaced the conventional manually-operated lever for the rear brakes.

A minor facelift in 2004 refined the S-Type’s overall appearance, with the addition of redesigned standard front and rear aprons, slightly modified grille to include the Jaguar badge, remodeled rear light clusters, an aluminium bonnet, and a new 2.7 L V6 diesel engine. The windscreen washer jets were incorporated into the windscreen wiper arms. Internally, the center console was redesigned to incorporate the revised switch-gear and radio (or optional satellite navigation equipment).

The Jaguar XF is a mid-size luxury car / sports sedan made by Jaguar Cars. It was launched in the UK in 2008 and replaced the S-Type in the company’s lineup. The production version of the XF debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show,[1] and customer deliveries commenced in March 2008. In January 2008, the XF was awarded the prestigious What Car? Car of the Year award, as well as taking away the prize in the executive car category. The XF was also awarded Car of the Year 2008 from What Diesel? magazine.

The XF was developed at Jaguar’s Whitley design and development HQ in Coventry, UK and is built in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, UK.

The Jaguar C-XF (for Concept-XF) was a concept car which indicated a new design direction for Jaguar Cars. It was revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The C-XF concept was a preview of the forthcoming Jaguar XF model.

Details of the concept were officially unveiled by Jaguar on 3 January 2007.

The current and previous generations of Jaguar cars were notably “retro” in design, being heavily influenced by styling cues from classic Jaguars from the 1960s. The C-XF represents a departure from that design strategy. Although the C-XF has four doors, its shape is very much that of a coupé, following a design trend started by the already successful Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Jaguar knows that this approach could limit the potential market for the car, but the thinking within Jaguar is that its current woes are down to an overly ambitious, poorly conceived and executed plan to turn Jaguar into a large-volume rival for BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. So now, instead of building the 200,000 cars per year, mooted at the turn of the century it will aim for somewhat less than 100,000, turning Jaguar into an exclusive, low-volume manufacturer of high-quality premium sporting cars. Hence, before Jaguar’s exit from the Ford group, the role of the large-volume rival against the established luxury German brands will be have been played by Volvo, the most successful and profitable company in now-defunct Premier Automotive Group, Ford’s stable of luxury brands. The Jaguar XK was the first tentative step in this direction — the XF is the giant leap, as Ian Callum (Jaguar design director) puts it: “Jaguars should be perceived as cool cars, and cool cars attract interesting, edgy people.”

The Jaguar XJ is a luxury saloon sold under the British Jaguar marque. The XJ was launched in 1968 and has served as the Jaguar flagship model for most of its production span which continues through to today. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have had the input of Sir William Lyons, the company’s founder.

The XJ6, using 2.8 L (2790 cc/170 in³) and 4.2 L (4235 cc/258 in³) straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar’s renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar’s saloons – which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate ranges. An upmarket version was marketed under the Daimler brand and called the Daimler Sovereign, continuing the name from the Daimler version of the Jaguar 420. The “XJ” designation was from the car’s code name during development, standing for Experimental Jaguar.

The car was introduced in September 1968. Power assisted steering and leather upholstery were standard on the 2.8 L ‘De Luxe’ and 4.2 L models and air conditioning was offered as an optional extra on the 4.2 L. Daimler versions were launched in October 1969, in a series of television advertisements featuring Sir William. In these spots, he referred to the car as “the finest Jaguar ever”. In 1972 the option of a long wheel base version, providing a modest increase in leg room for passengers in the back, became available.

The XJ12 version, featuring simplified grille treatment, and powered by a 5.3 L V12 engine (coupled to a Borg Warner Model 12), was launched, also in 1972: 3,235 of these first generation XJ12s were built. Again, an upmarket version, this time called the Daimler Double-Six, was available, reviving the Daimler model name of 1926-1938.

The Jaguar XJ-S (later the Jaguar XJS) is a luxury grand tourer produced by the British manufacturer Jaguar. The XJ-S replaced the legendary E-Type (or XK-E) in September 1975, and was based on the XJ saloon. It had been developed as the XK-F, though it was very different in character from its predecessor. Although it never had quite the same sporting image, the XJ-S was a competent grand tourer, and more aerodynamic than the E-Type[citation needed]. The last XJS was produced on 4 April 1996, with the XK8 taking its place.

The first XJ-S appeared in 1975 as a 1976 model. Power came from the Jaguar V-12 petrol engine with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission, but the manual was soon dropped. V-12 automobiles were unusual at the time, with notable others coming from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari. The specifications of the XJ-S compared well with both Italian cars; it was able to accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 8.9 seconds and reach 142 mph (229 km/h). The first series of XJ-S cars had a Borg-Warner Model 12 transmission with a cast iron case and a bolt-on bell-housing. In 1979 GM Turbo-Hydromatic 400 transmissions were fitted. The TH400 transmission was an all aluminium alloy case with an integrated non-detachable bell-housing.

Jaguar’s timing was not good; the car was launched in the wake of a fuel crisis, and the market for a 5.3-litre V12 grand tourer was very small. The styling was also the subject of criticism, including the “flying buttresses” behind the windows.

Jaguar did seize promotional opportunities with the television series The New Avengers and Return of the Saint. The New Avengers featured Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt) who drove an XJ-S. Return of the Saint saw Simon Templar (played by Ian Ogilvy) driving an early XJ-S with the number plate “ST 1″. Miniature versions were made by Corgi and proved popular. A decade and a half before, Jaguar had turned down the producers of the earlier Saint series when approached about the E-type; the producers had instead used a Volvo P1800.

Responding to criticisms that the XJ-S was not a worthy E-type successor, Pininfarina revealed a sporty show car in 1978 based on XJ-S mechanicals and called Jaguar XJSpider[2]. The car never went into production.

The Jaguar XK series (XK8 and XKR) is a grand tourer produced by British carmaker Jaguar since 1996. The car was introduced in Geneva Motor Show on March 5th 1996. It is the replacement of the XJS, and is available as a coupé and convertible. Currently in its second generation, the XK8 was the first 8 cylinder vehicle produced by Jaguar, when the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine was introduced.

The 1997 XK8 (project code X100) was available in coupé or convertible body styles and with either a supercharged 370 hp (276 kW) or naturally aspirated 290 hp (216 kW) engine. The supercharged variant is known as the XKR. The first-generation XK series shares its platform with the Aston Martin DB7. Both cars are derived from the Jaguar XJS, though the platform has been extensively changed, with co-efficient drags of 0.35 and 0.36 for the XK8 coupe and XK8 convertible respectively.

Both the XK8 and XKR are electronically limited to a maximum of 155 mph (250 km/h), lower than the top speed of its predecessor. The XK8 heralded a change in direction for the company, resulting in the S-Type and X-Type.[citation needed]

Both the XK8 and XKR come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, and 19 and 20-inch wheels are available for additional cost. A navigation system and self-leveling xenon headlamps come standard with the XKR and as options for the XK8. Jaguar’s Adaptive Cruise Control is an optional feature available on both models. Both come with all-leather interior, burl walnut trim, and side airbags. Jeremy Clarkson, during a Top Gear (a UK motoring magazine/TV show) test-drive, likened the interior of the original XK8 to sitting inside Blenheim Palace. In 2005 the grille design of the XKR was refreshed.

The X-Type is a compact executive car produced by the British luxury automaker Jaguar since 2001. It is the smallest of the current range of Jaguar saloons and, alongside the 1998 S-Type, was intended to spearhead the company’s efforts in emulating the sales of German rivals Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. It was produced at Jaguar-Land Rover’s Halewood facility in Liverpool, alongside the Land Rover Freelander/LR2.

Codenamed X400, the X-Type was Jaguar’s attempt to compete in the compact executive car segment. Jaguar and parent company Ford envisaged the ‘baby Jag’ as Jaguar’s first compact 4-door. The X-Type was one of the last to be styled under the supervision of Geoff Lawson, with the principal designer credited as Wayne Burgess.[1]

Neither Jaguar nor Ford had a suitable small rear-wheel drive platform to base the X-Type on, and the decision was made to base the X-Type on a modified version of the Ford CD132 platform, the basis for the 2000 Ford Mondeo. In order to distinguish it from its rivals and its Ford origins, the X-Type was initially offered as all-wheel drive only and mated to a 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine. In 2003, the X-Type was offered in front-wheel drive with the introduction of Jaguar’s first diesel engines, and with the smaller 2.0-litre petrol V6.

In 2004, a further body style was added with the introduction of a estate version, making it the second-ever Jaguar estate car. In the United States, the estate was officially known as the “Sportwagon”.

In 2007, the X-Type was facelifted and sports a different front grille, front bumper, rear bootlid, and rear bumper, to give the car a more dynamic and contemporary look. The new grille echoes the grille on the 2008 XF, and the facelifted 2008 XJ.
