The 2009 Infiniti FX35 has been completely redesigned. Its 3.5-liter V6 gets a slight power boost and is now mated to a new seven-speed automatic transmission. The second-generation FX35 is rife with high-tech standard and optional features, including a hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time satellite traffic information, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and Distance Control Assist, which helps to release the throttle and apply the brakes in heavy traffic.

Five years after its debut, the midsize luxury SUV that Infiniti deemed the “Bionic Cheetah” has morphed into a slightly different animal. While the redesigned 2009 FX35 keeps many of its lean, catlike lines, it now features a longer nose, a restyled black chrome grille and chrome-plated side vents — an aggressive, controversial look that has drawn both praise and criticism for resembling an aquatic creature (think shark, piranha, catfish) as much as a wild feline.

Underneath the new styling, the second-generation FX (the V8-powered FX50 is also new) rides on an updated platform whose basic architecture is shared with Infiniti’s G35 and EX35, so the FX’s nimble, carlike handling comes as no surprise. And while the engine underneath the hood of this voluptuous machine is the same size as the one in the previous generation, this year’s 3.5-liter V6 cranks out an additional 28 horsepower, though torque output has dipped slightly. Power is sent to the rear wheels or an all-wheel-drive system via a new seven-speed automatic transmission.

Perhaps more significant is the number of technology features available in the 2009 FX35. It’s replete with sensors and systems and doodads that could practically control the car on its own, from a new system dubbed Distance Control Assist (DCA), which helps to release the throttle and apply the brakes in heavy traffic, to Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA), which can stop the car completely, then resume a preset speed. There’s also a new hard-drive-based navigation system that can store music files, and a trick camera-based parking system as well.

The five-passenger 2009 FX35 starts at nearly $3,000 more than last year’s model, and the packages that include the fanciest gadgets inflate the price tag considerably. Furthermore, the FX35′s passenger space and cargo capacity are rather unimpressive. There are other options in this price range that serve up similarly luxurious accoutrements along with added utility. Both the Acura MDX and Cadillac SRX, for instance, offer more cargo space and seven-passenger seating. However, neither has the visual impact and performance capability of the Infiniti. Only BMW seems willing to target this niche, with its X6 xDrive 35i. It performs similarly, yet has seating for just four passengers and starts at about $10,000 more. For those who want a sporty and aggressively styled crossover with the latest and greatest in automotive technology, the 2009 Infiniti FX35 is a solid choice.

The Infiniti EX was debuted in North America beginning in the 2008 model year. This all-wheel drive hatchback, though many consider it a compact SUV, is priced between the G35 and M. It shares the same FM platform as the G35, M, FX, and Nissan 350Z.

The production model EX35 was revealed on August 16, 2007 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. [1]

The nameplate EX35 refers to the engine found under its hood; the fourth-generation dual overhead cam 297 hp 253 lb-ft torque 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 VQ35HR gasoline engine, with aluminum-alloy block and heads, ladder frame construction, variable exhaust cam timing (eCVTCS), asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors, electronically controlled drive-by-wire throttle system, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, and low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons that takes use of the Continuous variable valve timing. This is also coupled with an electronically controlled super-wide ratio five-speed automatic with a manual shift mode that includes the option of sequentially selected manual gearshifts and Downshift Rev Matching (DRM).

Based on Car & Driver’s test of the Infiniti EX35, it outperforms its competitors. 0-60 mph time is 5.8 – 6.2 seconds. The quarter mile is 14.6 seconds at 98 miles per hour (158 km/h), and top speed (Gov. limit) is 144 mph (232 km/h). 70 mph (110 km/h) – 0 braking is a short 166 feet (51 m), shorter than the Pontiac G8 GT (a sports sedan). The Roadholding is .83g’s. Lastly notes from the test say, “Acceleration runs are faster using manumatic mode, which is unusual. Excellent fade-free brakes.”

The Infiniti FX is a mid-size luxury Crossover SUV produced by the Nissan-owned Infiniti luxury vehicle brand since the 2003 model year. The FX replaced the QX4 as Infiniti’s mid-size luxury-type SUV, despite being larger than its predecessor. It was released at the same time as its competitors, the Porsche Cayenne and Volvo XC90. It shares the same FM platform as the rear-wheel drive Nissan 350Z, whereas the similarly sized Nissan Murano is based on the front-wheel drive Nissan Altima platform.

The Infiniti FX is not sold in Japan.

In creating the FX, its designers sought what they called a “cool fusion” – the blending of a substantial, SUV lower body with the sleek, elegant upper body more reminiscent of a classic sports car or sports GT. [1] In addition, they sought to combine sports-car performance with SUV functionality. The FX is a unique combination of aggressive styling, performance and luxury car comfort. The FX was based on the notion of a “Bionic Cheetah,” with advanced technology employed to create a premium crossover SUV.[2] The FX is now in its second generation with the 2009 FX35 and FX50.

The nameplates FX35 and FX45 refer to the two available engines. The FX35 is available in two drivetrains, the RWD and the AWD, which are both fitted to a dual overhead cam 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 VQ35DE gasoline engine, with aluminum-alloy block and heads, electronically controlled “drive-by-wire” throttle system, and low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons that makes use of the Continuous variable valve timing which in part optimizes the opening of intake valves. The FX45 incorporates a 4.5-liter (4,494 cc) 32-valve V8 DOHC VK45DE gasoline engine with four valves per cylinder, microfinished camshafts with aluminum-alloy block and heads, low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons, titanium intake and exhaust valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons, super-silent single stage cam drive chain, and a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System that optimizes opening of intake valves. The Infiniti G is an entry-level luxury car/mid-size car and coupe produced by Nissan’s Infiniti division. The first two generations of the Infiniti G (P10 and P11) were based on the Nissan Primera, while the generation (V35) of the Infiniti G were based on the sportier Nissan Skyline platform. In its latest version (V36) the Nissan FM platform used for the 2nd gen G cars has shared components with the Infiniti M and also underpins the 350Z and the Infiniti FX models.

The Infiniti G20 was Infiniti’s entry-level luxury car in the United States during most of the 1990s and into the 2000s. Similar to the Japanese/European market Nissan Primera sedan, the G20 offered higher levels of standard equipment. It was launched in 1991 as Infiniti’s first small car as an entry-level alternative to the Q45; later advertisements emphasized its European heritage with the tag line “Born in Japan. Educated in Europe. Now Available in America.” Two generations of the G20 exist in the United States, the HP10 (P10), built from 1991 to 1996, and the HP11 (P11), built from 1999 to 2002. All G20s were front-wheel drive and were built in Oppama, Japan.

The first 1991 G20 was completed on July 10, 1990. The final 1996 G20 was completed on July 19, 1996. The P10 featured the first application of Nissan’s multi-link front suspension in a front-wheel-drive car, with an independent MacPherson strut setup in the rear. It came standard with a 5-speed manual transmission. The only options to begin with were an automatic transmission, leather interior, and a power glass moonroof; a Touring package (labeled G20t) was introduced in 1994 and featured a black leather interior with sport front bucket seats and fold-down rear seats, as well as a limited-slip differential in the transmission and a spoiler on the rear decklid.

The G20 was powered by a transversely mounted DOHC NA reciprocating internal combustion engine, the SR20DE, a 2.0 litre (1998 cc) square (Bore × Stroke: 86.0 × 86.0 mm) Inline 4-cylinder. This engine was also shared with the US-spec Nissan Sentra/Nissan 200SX SE-R, Nissan NX2000, and a host of non-US Nissan vehicles. The particular version used in the G20 produced 140 crank horsepower in the US at first, and 145 in ’00+ editions (116 to 126 whp; stock range) and 132 lb·ft (179 N·m) or 136 lb·ft (184 N·m) torque (111 to 120 wft·lbf; stock range). These engines were also fairly high-revving with a redline of 7500 rpm for 1991 through 1996 editions, 6950 rpm for the 1999 edition, and 6750 rpm for 2000+ editions. Due to the SR20DE engine’s flexibility, reliability, fuel economy and high power-handling capabilities, as well as a low buy-in cost, pre-owned SR-powered Sentras, 200SXs and G20s have become popular and prominent in the “tuner” or “import scene” subculture.

There were three major variants of the SR20DE used in the G20. The first, used from 1991 to 1993.5, was the highport, in which the injectors and fuel rail were located above the intake plenum. In 1994, due to tightening emissions restrictions, Nissan switched to a lowport design, in which the injectors and fuel rail switched places with the intake plenum. This design also featured a milder intake camshaft; switching it out for the highport intake cam is a popular upgrade to gain more power. This design was used from 1994 to 1996 and again in 1999. In 2000 Nissan replaced the valvetrain with a roller-rocker arm lifter design in place of the (non roller) rocker arm previously used, but kept the lowport intake design; many performance parts are not interchangeable between roller-rocker and highport/lowport engines, most notably camshafts.

The Infiniti I30 and I35 were mid-size luxury cars sold under Nissan’s Infiniti marque in North American markets. The I was a rebadged Nissan Cefiro and mechanically related to the Nissan Maxima.

The 1996 I30 used a 3.0L VQ30DE V6 engine shared with the Maxima, as it was Infiniti’s first rebadged North American Nissan. It produced 190 hp (142 kW). The inexpensive “near-luxury” I30 was Infiniti’s top seller. All I30/I35s were built in Oppama, Japan (the former home of the Maxima). The very first I30 was built on June 27, 1995. The I30 was Infiniti’s entry-level car for 1997-1998, and the return of the Infiniti G20 in 1999 returned to take over from the I30 as Infiniti’s entry-level car.

Infiniti released the original I30 in 1996 as a replacement for their aging J30 sedan, which was a rear-wheel drive car. The I30 was notably sportier than the J had been, and sported a more aggressive look than the J, although it was never considered a true sports-sedan. Although the overseas Nissan Primera based G20 was technically Infiniti’s least expensive model, the I30 was often considered to be the company’s entry-level luxury car (at least briefly), whereas the G20 really did not have any direct competitors. Infiniti often claimed that the car was aimed at buyers who would otherwise be considering the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Saab 9-5.

Infiniti made several revisions to the I30 throughout the mid and late 1990s, including a fairly significant styling update for 1998, which included improvements to the Bose audio system and the addition of side impact airbags. The Touring model included more aggressive suspension tuning as well as a spoiler and BBS wheels, and a small percentage of first-generation I30s had 5-speed manual transmissions, many with VLSD.

The I30 was redesigned for 2000 along with the Maxima. Engine power was up to 227 hp (169 kW) but the manual transmission was no longer offered.

The Infiniti J30 was a rear wheel drive luxury car. The J30 went into production on April 7, 1992 as a 1993 model to replace the M30 (which was a coupe), and was launched in the United States at the same time as its competitor, the Lexus GS. The car was designed to slot between the smaller G20 and the larger Q45, as Infiniti’s first mid-size sedan. Also, it was fairly small but featured rounded styling uncharacteristic of the crowded near-luxury market. Chief exterior designer for the J30 was Jerry Hirschberg, president of Nissan Design International (NDI).

Unlike earlier Infinitis, the J30 received effective advertisement with jazz music and artistic camera shots. Power came from a 3.0 L VG30DE V6 (shared with the 300ZX) which produced 210 hp and 192 lb·ft (260 N·m) of torque. While it shares the Y32 Chassis with the Nissan Cedric/Gloria, it was essentially a rebadged version of the Japan-market Nissan Leopard, where it was offered with both the VG30DE and VH41DE V8.

All J30s were built in Tochigi, Tochigi, Japan. Production of the J30 ended on June 18, 1997, replaced by the Infiniti I30 (introduced in 1996).

One of the shortcomings of the J30 was its lack of interior room. It had the distinction of being a mid-size car with the space of a subcompact (less than a Sentra) due to its sloping roofline and shrunken trunk.

Infiniti also produced a touring model, the J30t. This model featured a rear spoiler, BBS style alloy wheels, a stiffer suspension, and HICAS (four wheel steering). HICAS was only available in the J30t from 1993-1994. The J30 remained nearly unchanged through its production period. Heated seats became standard equipment in the 1994 model year. For 1995, the J30 received subtle vertical ribbing in the tail light lenses and in ’96 the diagnostic system was upgraded to “OBD2″. Otherwise, the J30 received only minor alterations between 1993 and 1997 model years.

The J30 was launched with a memorable ad campaign, featuring a middle-aged yuppie wearing all black. Actor Jonathan Pryce, who was the host, used phrases like “This is the Infiniti J30. And this is the clock in the J.” These phrases were spoken with an elitist tone that was widely ridiculed. Infiniti’s chief competitors in the Japanese-American luxury car market, Acura and Lexus, used a similar technique in their commercials, which have also featured celebrity voice-overs, done by James Sloyan (Lexus) and James Spader (Acura).
