They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. But what happens when the imitator becomes better than the imitated?

For years now, Hyundai has had its sights set on Toyota. The Japanese giant’s strategy for its vehicles is to make them reliable, impeccably made, conservative in style and comfortable to ride in. Hyundai has taken that approach to heart, and the 2009 Hyundai Sonata is proof positive that it has gotten it right. In fact, not only has the updated Sonata caught up to the mighty Camry, it’s driven past it.

For 2009, Hyundai’s midsize family sedan sees several key changes. Both the four- and six-cylinder engines have received an influx of power, while raising fuel economy at the same time. That’s worthy of a thumbs-up any day. The biggest news, however, resides inside. While this generation Sonata’s original cabin was hardly an environment worth shaking a finger at, Hyundai was never pleased with it from the get-go. This year’s complete makeover performed on the center stack, gauges and center console has led to an overall design that is more user-friendly and better looking. Materials have also been improved, while the top-level Limited trim boasts a tasteful blend of color combinations, wood-grain accents and alloy trim. To be frank, this is the Lexus-lite interior we were expecting when Toyota’s all-star was last redesigned. Hyundai has delivered it instead.

When the Hyundai Sonata was redesigned three years ago, it gave the top family sedans a run for their money — in fact, we ranked it over the Accord and Camry in a 2006 comparison test. Since then, both of those rivals have been completely redesigned, as have the impressive new Nissan Altima and Chevrolet Malibu. The changes for 2009 bring the Sonata back closer to par. Although we’re not sure it’s still the class beater, the case can certainly be made that Hyundai has built a better Camry than Toyota did. Perhaps the imitated should become the imitator.

The Hyundai Accent (sold in some regions as the Verna and until 2000 in Australia as the Excel) is a small family car produced by Hyundai in South Korea, India, Russia, Turkey, and Iran.

The Accent is produced for the Chinese market by Beijing Hyundai Co., a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. For Russian market it is assembled by TagAZ plant in Taganrog. In Mexico, the Accent is marketed by Chrysler as the Dodge Attitude, previously Verna by Dodge. In Venezuela, Chrysler marketed the Brisa de Dodge until 2006. The Brisa is assembled by Mitsubishi Motors at its plant in Barcelona, Venezuela. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running small family car sold in North America. In Puerto Rico, it has been sold as the Hyundai Brio.

The Hyundai Accent (X3) was introduced as a replacement for the Excel for the 1995 model year. It continued to be called Excel in some markets, such as the Netherlands and Australia. In France, it was called the Hyundai Pony.

In Australia, the X3 proved so popular (due to its low price) that it was the third best-selling vehicle in the country in both 1996 and 1998. In the latter year, it achieved more than 44,000 sales (a 5.5% share of the total market), a record figure at the time, for an imported car. Between 1994 and 2000, some 200,000 X3s were sold in Australia, making it arguably the most successful imported vehicle in the country’s history.[citation needed]

The Accent was sold in saloon (sedan), hatchback, and coupé form in the UK, with a choice of three engines for each: a 1.3 12v (85HP), 1.5 12v (92HP) and a 1.5 16v (105HP) petrol. There was no diesel option (until the 2003 redesign). A GSi spec car was the top-specification Accent with front power windows and a radio/cassette player.

The Hyundai Tiburon (also known as Hyundai Coupe) is a compact coupe produced by Hyundai since 1996. The name itself means “Shark” in Spanish. Tiburon is the name given to the current North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle, though it is called the Hyundai Coupe in other world markets. It has also been known by the moniker Turbulence and Tuscani in the South Korean market.

The model has been released in two generations (RD and GK) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon has been produced since 2002 and is still in production in its latest guise.

Hyundai officially announced that the 2008 model year will be the last for the Tiburon. While no replacement has been announced, Hyundai has officially stated that the 2010 Genesis Coupe is not a Tiburon replacement[1].

Tiburon first began production in late 1996. It was available in a few foreign markets with engine choices of either 1.6L or 1.8L. In the United States, the Tiburon was first offered in 1997 with base models using the Elantra’s 1.8L 130 hp (97 kW) engine while the upscale FX received a 2.0L four-cylinder engine. The 2.0L was rated at 140 hp (104 kW) at the crankshaft (the car’s manual specifies 102 kW (137 hp) at the flywheel). Base weight was around 2,550 lb (1,150 kg), giving the RD Tiburon a higher power to weight ratio than the newer GK 2.0L. The 2.0L produces a 0-60 mph time of ~7.9 seconds[2], with a 1/4 mile time of ~16 seconds. In 1998 the Tiburon lost its weaker 1.8L engine, giving both models the 2.0L. All versions of the Tiburon manufactured from 1996-2001 are known as “RD” Tiburons. There were various options, with or without ABS, 2 airbags, leather, and sunroof.

The Hyundai Elantra (sold in South Korea as the Avante) is a compact car from Hyundai of South Korea launched in 1991.

The Elantra was formerly sold as the Lantra and the Avante in some Australian and European markets.

This gave rise to disagreement from other motor manufacturers, and the name was standardized as “Elantra” worldwide in 2001.

Between 1996 and 1998, the Elantra was marketed as the Bimantara Nenggala (1.8 litre petrol) in Indonesia. (The Cakra (1.5 litre petrol) was based on the Accent [X3].)

The Hyundai Elantra is listed as United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Picks Ten Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles. The Elantra ranked #2 in 2006 and 2007 in the category of most fuel efficient sedans, and also was ranked as the most efficient non-hybrid mid-sized sedan.[2]

Hyundai Elantra SE awarded 2008 Consumer Reports “top pick”. Hyundai Elantra SE was among the top 10 vehicles for 2008 unveiled in the magazine’s issue. The magazine’s annual ratings, based on road tests and predicted safety and reliability are considered highly influential among consumers.[3]

Hyundai Elantra earned Consumer Reports’ ‘excellent’ rating in predicted reliability. Hyundai Elantra SE is Consumer Reports top-ranked 2008 vehicle amongst 19 other compacts and subcompacts (however, the less expensive GLS trim line, without the electronic stability control standard on the SE trim line, and with less sporty tires, was ranked closer to the middle of the group). Beating out such high-quality competitors as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Prius.[4][5][6]

The Hyundai Entourage is a minivan sold by Hyundai Motor Company in the North American market beginning with the 2007 model year. It is based on the Kia Sedona, now in its second generation. The Entourage was canceled in August 2005, but resurrected in October without affecting its introduction date. The production Entourage was shown at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2006. The Entourage went on sale in April 2006. Sales of the Entourage have been slow, selling about 2,000 units in its first year, and the Entourge outsold the Sedona in its first model year.

The Entourage is powered by the same 3.8 L Lambda V6 that powers the Azera luxury sedan but with output reduced from 265 hp (198 kW) to 252 hp (188 kW). It seats seven people with optional equipment ranging from automatic climate control, leather seating, power sliding doors and tailgate, reverse sensors, and a six-disc in-dash CD changer. Unlike the Sedona, which will add a short-wheelbase version for 2007, the Entourage will be available in extended-length only. However, Hyundai will not add a short-wheelbase Entourage because of the mid-size Hyundai Veracruz crossover SUV, which measures about the same length as the short-wheelbase Sedona.

The American configuration of the Hyundai Entourage earned a five-star safety rating — the highest honor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bestows — for all seating positions in frontal and side-impact crashes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the Entourage “Good” — its highest rating — in front, side and rear impacts. The IIHS, in fact, has christened the 2007 Entourage a “Gold Top Safety Pick,” making the Entourage (and the similar Kia Sedona) the safest minivan ever tested.

The Hyundai Genesis (Korean: ?? ????) is a rear-wheel drive, full-size[1] car introduced initially as a concept car in the 2007 New York International Auto Show.

Hyundai has introduced the vehicle worldwide, known internally as the BH model, and will initially market the Genesis as a “premium sports sedan,”[2] in one body style with three possible engines. The Genesis will at least not initially be introduced to Europe. A coupe version was introduced at the 2008 New York International Auto Show and will join the sedan at a later date.

Hyundai targets 55,000 sales of the Genesis in 2008 (35,000 in Korea and another 20,000 overseas) and 45,000 in 2009,[3] with sales goals of 50,000 per year in the United States.[4] According to the Hyundai Chairman and CEO Chung Mong-koo, the Genesis is Hyundai’s first entry into the European dominated luxury arena.[3]

According to Hyundai Vice Chairman Kim Dong-jin, the name Genesis is a reflection that the vehicle is the first of many premium cars the company will introduce.[3] Edmunds.com gave the car 9.5 out of 10 points, stating that it features a cabin comparable to a top-of-the-line Lexus, but pointed to lacking “brand cachet” as the main problem.[5] The Hyundai Genesis was named the 2009 North American Car of the Year.[6]

Introduced in March, 2007 as the “Concept Genesis”, the sedan was designed by Hyundai as a “progressive interpretation of the modern rear-wheel drive sports sedan”[7]. Hyundai conceived the idea for the Genesis in 2003. The body design took three years and the total cost of the program was $500 million over a development period of 23 months. Reliability testing ran for 800,000 miles.[8]

Hyundai reportedly benchmarked the BMW 5-Series sedan during the Genesis’ development; their press release indicates the Genesis body-in-white exceeds the BMW in torsional rigidity by 14%.[9] The production Genesis sedan received a five-star crash rating in every category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.[10]

The Hyundai Grandeur (Hangul:?? ???) is a mid-size/full-size sedan manufactured and marketed globally by Hyundai Motor Company since model year 1986. The Grandeur has evolved through four generations with intermediate restylings, and is marketed under various nameplates worldwide — prominently as the Azera.

The first Grandeur was a rebadged Mitsubishi Debonair produced by Hyundai. Initially launched with Mitsubishi-sourced 2.0L SOHC MPI engine also used in 1st generation Sonata. 2.4L SOHC MPI engine had added in 1987 and V6 3.0L engine model launched in 1991 to compete with Daewoo Imperial.

The New Grandeur and the third generation of the Mitsubishi Debonair were the products of a joint development between Hyundai and Mitsubishi Motors. Mitsubishi was responsible for the powertrain, and Hyundai was responsible for the body and trim design. Production of the car began in September 1992 and ended in 1998.

The “New Grandeur” came in various trim levels and 4 engine variations (4-cylinder 2.0L and three V6 engines (2.5L, 3L, and 3.5L). The Korea based Hyundai’s Grandeur became a huge success following the first generation Grandeur it replaced. However, the same model Mitsubishi marketed in Japan was perfunctory eventually leading Mitsubishi to end the product earlier than expected.

The 3-liter and 3.5-liter engines developed by Mitsubishi were substantial legacies to Hyundai, which at the time did not have the ability to manufacture large displacement engines on its own. Although Debonair’s failure in Japan, the Hyundai-Mitsubishi tie further lead to the production of Hyundai Equus / Mitsubishi Dignity premium flagship sedan. Since the production of Hyundai Equus, Hyundai develops all the engines in its product line on its own such as the industry-acclaimed 4.6-liter Tau Engine featured on the Hyundai Genesis
