For most of this decade, Toyota’s 46-mpg Prius has enjoyed a virtual monopoly in the extreme fuel-miser segment. Only Honda’s 42-mpg Civic Hybrid comes close, and its sales have been hampered by lethargic acceleration and a not-hybrid-looking-enough sedan body design. Enter the four-door 2010 Honda Insight, which takes dead aim at Toyota’s green machine by offering comparable fuel economy and a look-alike hatchback layout at a considerably lower price. Of course, those with a longer memory might recall the first-generation Honda Insight, too, but its futuristic look was too impractical for most people despite stellar fuel efficiency. Not so version 2.0.

Under the new Insight’s hood is Honda’s familiar Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system. IMA starts with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 88 horsepower and 88 pound-feet of torque, and it adds an electric motor that generates another 13 hp and 58 lb-ft, enough to propel the Insight up to 30 mph without the gas engine’s help. A nickel-metal hydride battery pack keeps the electric motor whirring, and the electric motor returns the favor via regenerative braking, becoming a battery-charging generator when the brakes are activated. Notably, the gas engine’s crankshaft never stops spinning, even when the Insight is operating solely on electric power, so there’s no unseemly coughing or rumbling as the gas engine comes online.

In addition to seamless and adequately perky performance, the payoff is an EPA-estimated 40 mpg city/43 highway and 41 combined, according to Honda. That’s a bit off the Toyota’s pace, but the deficit shouldn’t be a significant factor for most buyers. Over the course of a 15,000-mile year of driving, the Insight will run you an extra 40 gallons of gas, which accounts for a tiny fraction of the money you’ll save by choosing the Insight in the first place. With a starting price in the high teens, the Insight handily undercuts its crosstown rival’s $22,000 base price, not to mention the Civic Hybrid’s $23,550 cost of entry. In fact, the loaded Insight EX with the navigation system won’t cost too much more than a bare-bones Prius.

The Insight has two significant warts: Its backseat is considerably tighter than the Toyota’s family-sedan-grade rear quarters, and there’s plenty of Honda’s trademark road noise at higher speeds. On the flip side, though, it has sensible gauges and a superior driving position. Given its impressive talents and attractive price, it’s hard to fault the 2010 Honda Insight. Until the next Prius arrives, at least, the Insight is the new ruler of the hybrid-hatchback roost.

The first-generation Honda Pilot was a trendsetter, spearheading the initial wave of carlike SUVs that gave rise to the crossover SUV craze. The redesigned 2009 Honda Pilot seems designed to set a trend as well — namely, a trend toward angular, Jeep-like styling in the midsize crossover SUV segment. We’re not sure whether it will catch on, but no one will call the Pilot’s new look generic. The real question, though, is whether the virtues of the first-generation Pilot — one of our favorite midsize crossover SUVs — have been retained.

The answer is yes and no. On the bright side, Honda has made a point of enlarging third-row accommodations so that actual adults can fit back there, in part by adding an extra inch of width and 3 inches of length. Traditional Pilot traits like a well-cushioned ride, a smooth powertrain and optional four-wheel drive are also present and accounted for. However, the 3.5-liter V6, which receives only mild revisions for second-generation duty, feels sluggish compared to other V6s in this segment. Despite this lack of power, fuel economy is about equal to more muscular competitors. More distressing, though, were the long stopping distances we observed at our test track — this alone makes it difficult to recommend the Pilot.

Another departure from the past that’s not entirely welcome is the 2009 Pilot’s befuddling array of buttons for operating the audio and climate control systems, as opposed to the no-brainer layout in last year’s model. But those attracted to the new Pilot’s distinctive styling may be willing to forgive such idiosyncrasies. Maximum cargo volume remains essentially the same at 87 cubic feet, which should satisfy all but the most haul-happy families. Fuel economy, while still nothing to write home about, has improved a smidge.

Competition is stiff in the midsize crossover SUV segment. GM offers the impressive Buick Enclave/Chevrolet Traverse/GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook quadruplets, while the Ford Flex, Hyundai Veracruz, Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Highlander are equally viable contenders. If we had our way, Honda would have done a little more to distinguish the 2009 Pilot from both the competition and its likable but aged predecessor. It’s certainly still worthy of consideration, but unless you’re smitten with the new Pilot’s tough-guy styling, we’d recommend giving other midsize crossover SUVs a thorough look as well.

On a weekly basis, we auto writer types in the office get weekly reports about what cars are most popular in terms of searches on our site. And for much of 2008, we were amused by reports for “Inside Line,” our dedicated car enthusiast site. One phrase kept coming in as number one. It wasn’t one of the expected ones like, “Nissan GT-R,” “Bitchin’ Camaro” or even “Danica Patrick.” It was, believe it or not, “2009 Honda Fit.”

Sure, we can understand why “normal” car shoppers would be interested in the Fit. This entry-level model, introduced just a couple years ago, quickly became a hit thanks to its high fuel mileage, innovative interior and nimble handling. But car junkies? Either the Fit has suddenly become cooler than a GT-R, or real-world, $4-dollar-a-gallon gas and everyday practicality have trumped supercar daydreams.

Either way, there’s a lot of hype for the fully redesigned, second-generation 2009 Fit. Honda’s plan for the car was to keep the original model’s spunky spirit intact while making a few key improvements. The new car is 4.2 inches longer than the previous model. This might seem like cause for concern, but curb weight, at about 2,500 pounds, has pretty much stayed the same. Enhanced body rigidity and suspension updates provide better handling, and Honda says the new body structure benefits from the company’s latest crash safety engineering efforts.

Inside, the extra length provides more room for rear passengers to stretch out. It also allows owners to fold down the rear seat without having to first remove the rear headrests. As before, you can do a lot of trick things with that rear seat, including flipping the cushions up (like in a crew-cab pickup) to create a tall cargo area. In terms of features, a telescoping steering wheel is a welcome addition. You can even get a factory navigation system and stability control for the first time.

Under the hood of this four-door hatchback, you’ll find a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the same as last year. It’s been revised with a number of changes, including an improved version of i-VTEC variable valve timing. Some might be disappointed that this hasn’t led to dramatically higher horsepower or better EPA fuel economy estimates (they’re both about the same as last year). But the overall drivability of the new Fit is noticeably better thanks to a wider spread of power.

The 2009 Honda Fit four-door hatchback replaces the original model that came to the U.S. in 2006. It’s larger now, but is still classified as a subcompact. As such, it competes with the Chevrolet Aveo, Hyundai Elantra, Scion xD and Toyota Yaris. As of publication, prices aren’t final, but Honda expects the car to sell for roughly the same price as the previous version, and to achieve similar gas mileage. That would mean prices around $14,000 to $15,000 and EPA-estimated 28/34 mpg city/highway with a manual transmission.

The Honda Civic del Sol was a 2-seater front-engined, front wheel drive, targa top convertible manufactured by Honda in the 1990s. Based on the Civic platform, the Del Sol was the successor to the popular Honda CR-X. It debuted in 1992 in Japan and the United Kingdom, and 1993 in the United States.

The Spanish name del sol translates as of the sun, and refers to the car’s opening roof. It was not a full convertible, featuring a removable hardtop that stowed in the trunk and a retractable rear window for that “convertible” feel. Trunk space was reduced from 10.5cf to 8.3cf while the targa was stowed.

In many markets the CR-X naming convention was dropped from the del Sol line as it was distinctly different from earlier models, which were hatchbacks and not targas. Starting with the 1995 models, Honda dropped the ‘Civic’ name from the del Sol in the Americas.

Production and sales ended with the 1997 model in the U.S. and 1998 elsewhere, with a total of slightly fewer than 75,000 models sold in America.

The del Sol was first introduced to North America in 1993 in two trim levels, The S and the SI. The base “S” model (called the VXi in Japan) came with a 1.5 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder engine and rode on 13″ steel wheels. The Japanese VXi version, came with a Honda D15B engine. This was an entry level VTEC engine that produces 130 bhp (97 kW; 132 PS), matching the power of the 1.6 Si version. Despite the body resemblance to a mid-engined car design, the del Sol shared a front-engined design with the contemporary Honda Civic.

The uplevel “Si” (called the “ESi” in Europe) model came standard with a 1.6 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder engine with Honda’s VTEC. The Si also came with 14″ alloy wheels which were offered in an optional body color-matched paint scheme on Samba Green models, power side mirrors, cruise control, rear disc brakes and a front anti-sway bar for improved handling.

The Honda CR-V is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Honda since 1996. It was loosely derived from the Honda Civic to satisfy a public demand for a sport-utility vehicle from Honda. There are discrepancies as to what “CR-V” stands for, with Honda sources in different markets citing different meanings. Though Honda sales literature in UK reportedly makes references to “Compact Recreational Vehicle”, other Honda references (including the official Honda Japan CR-V Fact Book[1] and Honda Worldwide[2]) cite “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle”. It is produced in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, although in many markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia, only all-wheel drive is offered.

Honda produces CR-Vs in the United Kingdom and Japan for worldwide markets, and as of 2007, North American CR-Vs are produced in East Liberty, Ohio. The CR-V is produced for the Chinese market by the Dongfeng Honda Automobile Company, a joint venture with Honda. Starting in fall 2007, North American CR-Vs will also be produced in Jalisco, Mexico in addition to the US, Japan, and Britain due to high demand. Honda executives considered making the CR-V as one of the first vehicles to be produced at Honda’s new facility currently under construction in Greensburg, Indiana that will open in fall 2008; however, the facility will initially exclusively produce the Civic, which may free up space in East Liberty for CR-V production from the 2009 model year onward. Elsewhere, the CR-V is Honda’s smallest SUV other than the related Element sold in the United States and Canada, and the HR-V sold in Europe. In size, the CR-V slots between the Element and Pilot.

Introduced in Japan in 1996, the CR-V was Honda’s first in-house designed SUV and was originally intended to be a niche vehicle only. Honda was hesitant to market the vehicle, since many felt the car did not have potential to sell alongside the Honda Passport and to take over the role of Honda’s entry-level SUV. In the United States, it was displayed for the first time at the 1996 Chicago Auto Show. Citing strong sales from the comparable Toyota RAV4 upon its release, the model was then brought stateside in February 1997. Shortly afterwards, CR-V sales outpaced those of the smaller RAV4[citation needed], and the compact SUV has maintained strong sales and gained accolades ever since.

The original CR-V’s production lasted from 1996 to 2001. Upon introduction, the model had only one trim level, which would later be known as the LX model trim; it was powered by the 2.0 L I4 B20B producing 126 hp (94 kW) and 133 ft·lb (180 N·m) of torque. Outer dimensions for this engine would be identical to the Integra’s 1.8 L engine, but internally the engine had a larger 84mm bore to add the extra displacement needed to produce more torque. The engine utilized a one-piece cylinder sleeve construction unique from any other B-series engine due to overlapping combustion chambers. The chassis was a unibody design with a 4-wheel double wishbone suspension. Inside, the rear seats were able to fold down, and a picnic table was stowed in the rear floor area. A common external trait that was visible with this generation was plastic cladding covering the front bumper, rear bumper, and fender wells. In most countries, CR-Vs had a chrome grille; however, in the US, the grille was made out of the same black plastic as the bumpers. A major difference between the LX and EX trims was that the EX had anti-lock brakes and 15 inch alloy wheels while the LX did not. Drivetrain options were: front wheel drive or Honda’s Real Time 4WD.

The Honda Insight is a hybrid electric vehicle manufactured by Honda and the first production vehicle to feature Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist system. The first-generation Insight was produced from 2000 to 2006 as a three-door hatchback.

Honda will introduce the forthcoming second-generation Insight in early 2009 as a five-door hatchback.[1][2]

Based on the Honda J-VX concept car unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, the Insight was introduced in 1999[3] and was the first production vehicle to feature Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist system. The Insight was also the first hybrid sold in North America. It featured optimized aerodynamics and a lightweight aluminum structure to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions.

Total global sales for the Insight amounted to only around 18,000.[4]

The Honda Integra, a car sold as an Acura in North America and as a Honda elsewhere, is a sporty front-wheel drive vehicle sold both as a sedan and hatchback. In the Acura lineup it was the smallest, least expensive model, designed to offer a competitor to vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf GTI, which was the most well known and popular “hot hatch” of the late 1980s when the Integra was introduced. Although a sedan was available for the first three generations of the Integra, it was dropped when the vehicle transitioned to its fourth generation “DC5″ platform, sold as the RSX in North America. The Acura TSX now takes the Integra sedan’s spot in the lineup.

Under the Honda lineup, the Integra was near the middle, slotting above smaller cars such as the Honda City, the Honda Civic, and the Honda Logo. The Honda Integra was considered to be mid-sized car by Japanese standards.

As of 2007, the fourth-generation Integra has been discontinued in North America and Australia, but is still sold in its home market of Japan. It was assembled in Sayama, Japan.

This vehicle debuted in Japan in 1985 as the Honda Quint Integra before going on sale a year later in North America as part of the then-new Acura lineup. Three and five-door hatchback bodies were available, with a 1.6 L DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine powering both. The engine was the vehicle’s most publicized feature, as DOHC, multi-valve engines were anything but commonplace in entry-level models at the time. The 5-door hatchback model was also sold in Australia but was rebadged as the Rover 416i.

The Integra was based on the less-sporty Civic, although it featured a small list of key upgrades over its lesser stablemate to help merit a price increase over the CRX Si, which was otherwise the sportiest compact vehicle being offered by Honda/Acura; enlarged 4-wheel disc brakes replaced the small front-disc/rear-drum setup used by the Civic and CRX, suspension calibration was re-worked, better tires were used and a 113 hp DOHC fuel injected 16-valve engine was used in place of the SOHC unit from the CRX Si. Combined with sleeker styling and a nicer interior, buyers were effectively convinced that the Integra was worth the extra money, and nearly 228,000 units were sold during the four year run of the first generation model.

The first generation Integras actually came with two different engines. Although they shared the same engine code (D16A1), there were a few differences. The engine differed in the years 1986 to 1987 and 1988 to 1989. The two engines are commonly called the “Browntop” and “Blacktop” due to the color of their valve covers. The “browntop” came in 1986 and 1987 Integras while the “blacktop” came in 1988 and 1989 models. The improvements in the “blacktop” engine included lighter rods, domed pistons for slightly higher compression, and an electric advance distributor (the “browntop” came with a vacuum advance distributor). The overall gain in performance was about 5 hp (3.7 kW) for 118 hp (88.0 kW).

The Honda Fit is a five-door hatchback subcompact car, manufactured by the Honda Motor Company of Japan, first introduced in June 2001 and now in its second generation. The Fit uses Honda’s Global Small Car platform, also used by the City/Fit Aria, Airwave, Mobilio, and the Mobilio Spike.

The nameplate Jazz is used in Europe, some parts of Asia, Australia, Oceania, the Middle East, and Africa – while retaining the name “Fit” in Japan, China, and the Americas.

Although the Honda Fit is now one of Honda’s global models, it experienced a very slow progression as it made its way around the world. The car first debuted in June 2001 in Japan. It was then introduced to Europe (early 2002), Australia (late 2002), South America (early 2003), South Africa and South-East Asia (mid 2003), China (mid 2004), and Mexico (late 2005).

A production model for the United States and Canadian markets debuted on January 8, 2006 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car was released in Canada on April 3, 2006, and in the U.S. on April 20, 2006. Due to its late introduction in Canada and the US, the current generation Fit will be replaced after only three model years by a new 2009 model, which was released for Japan in November 2007 as a 2008 model. Thus, the Fit is an exception to other Honda models sold in Canada and the US, which traditionally have 4 or 5-year model cycles. This reset is to ensure that the 2009 Fit and subsequent iterations will maintain the same platforms worldwide.

Honda originally intended to name the car “Fitta”, but shortened the name in some markets, and renamed it completely in others, upon discovering that in several Nordic languages, “fitta” is a popular slang word for “vagina”.[1]
