Children of the ’80s (and earlier) will recall the original Ford Taurus as a strikingly modern family sedan and wagon. Amid a sea of anonymous boxes on wheels, the Taurus stood out with spaceship-like styling and some relatively advanced features, winning legions of loyal customers.

Ah, how times have changed — the 2009 Ford Taurus isn’t even a “real” Taurus, but rather a renamed Ford Five Hundred, a large sedan that officially met its maker a couple years ago. And unlike those avant-garde Tauruses of yore, the current Taurus plays it safe with middle-of-the-road styling. On the bright side, though, the availability of Microsoft’s Sync system puts the Taurus on the technological cutting edge for this segment, and there’s plenty to like about it from a family-minded buyer’s point of view.

The first priority on many families’ lists is safety, and it doesn’t get much better than the Taurus in this regard — the government has given this Ford perfect five-star ratings across the board. Another Taurus virtue is its ample passenger and cargo space, both of which put midsize family sedans to shame. There’s available all-wheel drive for those who need it, and the Taurus rides smoothly for a car at this price point. Even the gas mileage is good: At 28 highway mpg, the V6-powered front-wheel-drive Taurus is more fuel efficient than quite a few midsize family sedans despite its full-size status.

However, there are reasons why the Taurus isn’t on the tip of our tongue when we speak of segment-leading full-size sedans. The steering wheel doesn’t telescope, which makes the car not very hospitable for taller folks. The brake pedal’s action is long and soft, inspiring little confidence during hard stops. Nor is the car particularly enjoyable to drive, a result of the unsporting high seating position, pronounced body roll on twisty roads and coarse-sounding V6.

Particularly given the availability of the segment-exclusive Sync system, which allows for seamless voice-activated operation of iPods and cellular phones, the 2009 Ford Taurus has enough going for it to be considered a contender in the full-size sedan category. This is especially true if the Taurus’ strengths of safety and interior room are priorities for you. However, one would be wise to check out a few other large sedans before deciding, including the Chrysler 300, Hyundai Azera, Pontiac G8 and Toyota Avalon.

The 2010 Ford Mustang puts a bounce in its gallop with rejuvenated styling inside and out. It also boasts larger wheels, standard stability control and more power for the V8-powered GT model. Handling has been improved across the board, and the GT benefits from suspension tuning from last year’s discontinued Bullitt edition. An optional GT TrackPack further sharpens the Mustang GT’s suspension for track duty. Additionally, Ford’s voice-activated Sync multimedia integration system is now available for the Mustang.

From the driver’s perspective, the 2010 Ford Mustang is a tale of two engines. The base Mustang with its aged V6 is a truck in sport-coupe clothing, a debatable 20-dollar upgrade at the Hertz counter. The Mustang V8, on the other hand, is a barrel-chested beast that lives to make stoplight mincemeat of similarly priced import sport coupes. But even the base Mustang V6 benefits from the numerous exterior and interior styling updates for 2010, and new optional features like Ford Sync are undeniably alluring. On this view, the 2010 Ford Mustang actually offers something for everyone: a rowdy V8-powered performance car for enthusiasts and a distinctively styled six-cylinder coupe for those whose tire-squealing days are behind them.

Let’s start with the Mustang GT, a rambunctious purveyor of burbling exhaust pipes and smoking tires that can nonetheless tackle a twisting mountain road with admirable poise. Its non-independent rear suspension might not be the most technologically advanced design on the planet, but the GT makes up for it with a combination of a sweet 4.6-liter V8 and shrewd suspension tuning, both of which have benefited from a raid on the discontinued Mustang Bullitt’s parts bin. The V8 gains 15 horsepower and 5 pound-feet of torque this year, thanks in large part to the Bullitt’s cold-air induction system, and the springs and shocks have also been dialed up to Bullitt levels of stiffness. For those who aren’t sufficiently impressed by the GT’s improvements, the TrackPack option package tightens up the suspension even further.

The Mustang V6, on the other hand, is saddled with an ancient V6 that’s intimately related to the venerable Ford Ranger pickup’s optional 4.0-liter power plant. It continues to sell well because of its eye-catching retro styling and considerably lower cost, but in our opinion, there are simply better choices. The Mustang V6′s base price makes us think of numerous other desirable sporty cars we’d rather spend that money on — the Honda Civic Si and Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T, to name a couple. However, we will confess that the Mustang V6 convertible would be our rental ragtop of choice, easily beating out the monumentally boring Chrysler Sebring.

Notwithstanding the Mustang V6′s mediocrity, the V8-powered GT is certainly an enticing proposition. It’s more nimble than the Dodge Challenger, and we anticipate that the Chevrolet Camaro will cost substantially more when equipped with a V8, even if it does end up being a better all-around car than the Mustang. One might also consider the Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6 and the Nissan 370Z, though neither can match the Mustang’s melodious V8. All said, the Mustang V6 may be the dog of this show, but the GT is a thoroughbred pony that offers one of the best sub-$30,000 rides in the business.

Crazy as it sounds, the best-selling vehicle for nearly all of the past 30 years has been Ford’s F-Series pickup truck. Although that prestigious title technically belongs to Ford’s entire F-Series family (meaning it includes the Super Duty rigs and commercial-use chassis cabs), most of the sales numbers were generated by the F-150. If you wanted to label something as “America’s truck,” this would be it. And for 2009, Ford has revamped the F-150 in an effort to retain that title.

Ford’s magic formula for the F-150 has traditionally consisted of strong towing and hauling capabilities, solid durability and a dizzying variety of body styles, trim levels and options. In recent years, this formula has been expanded to include a smooth, quiet ride and an easy-to-drive demeanor. If you can’t find something you like in an F-150, then maybe you don’t really want a pickup truck. Nonetheless, stiff competition in the large pickup segment has compelled Ford to give the F-150 a thorough freshening this year.

Making changes to a perennial cash cow is not something a company’s going to take lightly. As such, Ford has made careful but key upgrades to the F-150 that effectively address its former shortcomings. Notably, the F-150′s engine performance paled when compared to most rivals, so this year slightly more powerful engines, along with a six-speed automatic in place of the aged four-speeder, provide better low-speed acceleration as well as more relaxed and fuel-efficient cruising. The F-150 still can’t touch a Tundra in a stoplight drag race, but it no longer feels lethargic. More importantly, it boasts massive towing and hauling capacities along with slightly improved fuel economy.

Additional changes for the 2009 Ford F-150 include Super Duty-inspired front-end styling and a new high-zoot Platinum trim level. The SuperCrew also gets more “super” via a 6-inch cabin stretch, which provides a flat rear floor and limolike rear passenger room as well as the ability to carry really large objects within the cab. Other neat and useful features include a capless fuel filler, steps that deploy to ease access to the bed, Ford’s Sync multimedia voice command system (which can also provide weather, gas prices, sports scores and movie times via Sirius Travel Link) and an integrated trailer-brake controller. As before, there are numerous features that optimize hauling and reduce stress, such as a cargo management system and a rearview camera.

Facing off against the new Dodge Ram, the recently redesigned GM trucks, the Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan, the 2009 Ford F-150 has its work cut out for it. But with its class-leading work capacity, user-friendly features and pleasant driving dynamics, the F-150 remains one of the easiest half-ton pickups to live with on an everyday basis. And with the wide range of available body styles, trim levels and equipment, you’re sure to find one that meets your needs. America’s truck? You bet.

The Ford Windstar is a minivan that was produced and sold by the Ford Motor Company from March 1994 (for the 1995 model year) to 2003. This front-wheel drive minivan would eventually replace Ford’s aging rear-wheel drive Aerostar minivan. The two ran concurrently for three model years until the Aerostar’s demise in 1997. For the 2004 model year, it was replaced by the Freestar. All Windstars were built in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. It was Ford’s only minivan in North America to spawn two generations.

The all-new Windstar was released in March 1994, for the 1995 model year. While smaller than its predecessor, its sleek design, front-wheel drive, and better car-like handling made it more competitive with similar offerings from Chrysler and GM. The Windstar had beaten the third-generation Dodge Caravan to the market by over a year, which played a crucial role in Ford taking significant market share in the minivan market.

Though its size was between the smaller front-wheel drive Mercury Villager and the larger rear-wheel drive Ford Aerostar, for its first year, it was priced above both of them. By 1997, however, the Villager’s base price had surpassed the Windstar’s by several hundred dollars, and top-of-the-line Villager Nautica models went for some $6,000 USD more.

Among standard features were anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, seven-passenger seating, and a 3.8 L V6 engine, borrowed from the Taurus/Sable. This engine produced 155 hp (116 kW), but produced 220 lb·ft (298 N·m) of torque. For its inaugural year, the Windstar was available in base GL and high-end LX trim, as well as a cargo version called Cargo Van.

The Thunderbird was an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in the United States from 1955 through 2005 — through thirteen generations and various body types.

The name “Thunderbird” was inspired by the name of an exclusive housing development[citation needed] and recalls the mythological creature common to Indigenous peoples of North America.

The car entered production for the 1955 model year as a two-seater sporty car but unlike the Chevrolet Corvette, was never sold as a full-blown sports car. Ford named a new market segment by calling the Thunderbird a personal luxury car. In 1958, the Thunderbird gained a second row of seats. Succeeding generations became larger until the line was downsized in 1977, again in 1980, and once again in 1983. Sales were good until the 1990s, when large 2-door coupes became unpopular; production ceased after 1997. In 2002, a revived 2-seat model was launched, which was available through the end of the 2005 model year.

A smaller two-seater sports roadster was created at the behest of Henry Ford II in 1953 called the Vega. The completed one-off generated interest at the time, but had meager power, European looks, and a correspondingly high cost, so it never proceeded to production. The Thunderbird was similar in concept, but would be more American in style, more luxurious, and less sport-oriented.

Three men are generally credited with creating the original Thunderbird: Lewis D. Crusoe, a retired GM executive lured out of retirement by Henry Ford II; George Walker, chief stylist and a Ford vice-president; and Frank Hershey, a Ford designer. Crusoe and Walker met in France in October 1951. Walking in the Grand Palais in Paris, Crusoe pointed at a sports car and asked Walker, ‘Why can’t we have something like that?’ Some versions of the story claim that Walker replied by telling Crusoe, “oh, we’re working on it”…although if anything existed at the time beyond casual dream-car sketches by members of the design staff, records of it have never come to light.

The Ford Taurus X is a 6 to 7-passenger full-size crossover SUV produced by Ford in the United States. This vehicle was originally introduced in 2005 as the Ford Freestyle, before being renamed Taurus X for the 2008 model year. In Ford’s lineup, it replaced the Ford Taurus station wagon, and for 2007, it slotted between the Edge and the Explorer. It is sold in the United States and Canada, as well as South Korea and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

Initially going to be called the Ford CrossTrainer in development before adopting the Freestyle name as part of Ford’s then-naming strategy of naming all cars with the letter F, the Freestyle was previewed at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show with a Freestyle Concept before entering production for the 2005 model year. The vehicle was assembled at Chicago Assembly.

The vehicle used the Ford D3 platform, which it shared with the Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego, and various Volvos including the XC90. Although it shared its platform with the XC90, the two vehicles are significantly different. The Freestyle has three rows of seats with seating for seven, like many large SUVs (e.g. Ford Explorer, Ford Expedition) and minivans. The Freestyle features what Ford describes as “command seating,” seating with a higher H-point, to increase driver visibility and ease of entry and exit.

The Freestyle, along with the Five Hundred and the Ford Escape Hybrid, were the first American Ford vehicles to use a continuously variable transmission (CVT). To Ford’s surprise, 55% of buyers selected the Haldex Traction-equipped all-wheel drive model rather than the expected 40%. However, initial Freestyle sales were below Ford’s original projections, though sales were showing steady improvement. Some buyers selected the Freestyle as an alternative to the best selling Ford Explorer.

The Freestyle was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2005 (second behind Escape Hybrid).

The Ford Taurus is an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in the United States. Originally introduced in the 1986 model year, it has remained in near continuous production for more than two decades, making it the fourth oldest nameplate that is currently sold in the Ford lineup. [1] It has had a more upscale Mercury branded version entitled the Sable (1986-2005; 2008-2009), as well as a performance variant, the Ford Taurus SHO (1989-1999). It was a front-wheel drive mid-size car during its first production run, and it is now a full-size car available in front- or all-wheel drive. It is currently sold alongside a crossover SUV variant, the Ford Taurus X.

The original Taurus was a milestone design for Ford and the entire American automotive industry, as well as a very influential vehicle that brought many new features and innovations to the marketplace.[2] Since its launch in 1986, Ford has sold over 6.7 million Tauruses worldwide as of 2007,[3] making it the fifth bestselling North American nameplate in Ford’s history; only the F-150,[4] Escort,[5] Model T,[6] and Mustang[6] have sold more units. Between 1992 and 1996, the Taurus was the best-selling car in the United States,[7] eventually losing the title to the Toyota Camry in 1997[8]

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, sales of the Taurus declined as it lost market share to Japanese midsize sedans, and as Ford shifted resources towards developing SUVs. It was discontinued in 2006, with production initially ending on October 27, 2006 and 2007 being the last model year.[9] Rather than investing in an older nameplate, Ford had decided to replace the Taurus with the fullsize Five Hundred and midsize Fusion sedans, as well as replacing the Taurus wagon with the Freestyle crossover SUV.

However, Ford revived the Taurus name a few months later by renaming two new models that were intended to be facelifted versions of the Ford Five Hundred and Ford Freestyle “Taurus” and “Taurus X”, respectively.[10][11]. The all-new 2010 Taurus will become available July 2009.

The first-generation Taurus was launched in 1985 as a 1986 model to strong fanfare and sales, replacing the slow-selling[citation needed] LTD LX. Upon the Taurus’ debut, Ford was producing a range of rear-wheel drive cars, as Chrysler and General Motors offered more front-wheel drive vehicles. With the introduction of the Tempo, Ford had started its own transition to front-wheel drive. The Taurus displayed a rounder shape than its contemporaries, often likened to a ‘jelly bean’ or ‘flying potato’,[12] inspired by the design of the Audi 5000 and Ford’s own Tempo.[2] The aerodynamic design of the Taurus also made the car more fuel efficient, allowing Ford to meet the more stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards applied by the United States government.[2] The Taurus’ success ultimately led to an American automobile design revolution; Chrysler and General Motors developed aerodynamic cars in order to capitalize on the Taurus’ success.[2]

Along with the exterior of the Taurus, its interior was ahead of its time, and many features originating from it are still used in most cars today. The interior was designed to be extremely user friendly, with all of its controls designed to be recognizable by touch, allowing drivers to operate them without taking their eyes off the road. [2] For example, the switches to the power windows and power locks were designed with one half of the switch raised up, with the other half recessed, in order for its function to be identified by touch. To further enhance this “user friendliness”, the dashboard was designed to have all of the controls in the central area, within reach of the driver. The left side of the dash also curved slightly around the driver, to make controls easily accessible as well as creating a “cockpit” feel. However, it wasn’t curved enough to prevent the passenger from easily identifying and using the vehicle’s main controls as well.

The Ford Super Duty is a line of commercial trucks (over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg) GVWR) introduced in 1998 for the 1999 model year. The F-250 to F-550 Super Duties are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Assembly in Louisville, Kentucky. The F-650 & F-750 Super Duties are assembled at the Blue Diamond Truck plant in Mexico. For Mercosur (Brazil (F-250,F-350 AND F-4000)and Argentina (F-100)) are assembled at the Brazil, Engine 3.9 TurboDiesel, alvailable 4×2, 4×4, single cab w/short bed, crew cab w/short bed, single cab/ crew cab chasis.

The Super Duty trucks are larger, heavier built commercial/industrial series pickup trucks with heavier-duty body-on-frame steel ladder frames, axles, springs, brakes, transmissions, more powerful engines, and all other heavier/bigger components (with much higher payload and towing capacities) than the older traditional equivalent F-250, F-250HD (Heavy Duty), & F-350 Ford truck lines. In appearance, the Super Duty line might look a little similar to but does not share any of the design or build characteristics of the F-150. A F-250 Super Duty would surpass the older traditional F-350 in most categories.

For the 1999 model year, Ford dropped the regular (now to be considered the ‘light duty’) F-250, F-250HD (Heavy Duty), and F-350 truck lines only to introduce all-new F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks. By using two separate but related platforms for F-Series trucks, the inevitable compromises inherent in offering a wide range of load-carrying capacities were avoided. The main competition, General Motors, liked the idea so much that for the 2001 model year, the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD were introduced.

The Super Duty had several available engines. A 2-valve per cylinder 5.4 L Modular V8 with 260 horsepower (190 kW) and 350 foot-pounds force (470 N·m) of torque was standard, while the 2-valve per cylinder 6.8 L Modular V10 with 310 horsepower (230 kW) and 425 ft·lbf (576 N·m) of torque was an option. The 7.3 L Power Stroke turbodiesel with 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 500 foot-pounds force (680 N·m)of torque from 1999 to 2002 and upped to 250 hp (190 kW) and 525 ft·lbf (712 N·m) of torque in 2003. The 6.0 L Power Stroke with a variable-vane turbo was phased in starting in 2003; this engine produced 325 horsepower (242 kW) and 560 foot-pounds force (760 N·m) of torque.

Four transmissions were available. A standard 5-speed manual for gas engines, a standard 6-speed manual for diesel engines, an optional 4R100 4-speed automatic for gas or diesel, and an optional 5-speed automatic for Diesels. The 4-speed automatic was replaced in the 2003 model year truck with 6.0L Diesel engine by the new Torqshift 5-speed 5R110 automatic transmission. The 5-speed manual 1st to 5th gear ratios are 5.72, 2.94, 1.61, 1, & 0.76:1 with Reverse being 5.24:1. The 4-speed auto 1st to 4th gear ratios are 2.71, 1.54, 1, & 0.71:1 with Reverse being 2.88:1. The TorqShift ’5-speed’ auto 1st to 5th gear ratios are 3.09, 2.2, 1.54, 1, & 0.71:1 Reverse 2.88. The TorqShift design in fact has six forward ratios, but only five are advertised, with the ‘hidden’ gear only used in extreme cold weather.

These trucks were styled distinctly different for the first time from the smaller F-150 half-ton pickups. They did not share components with the F-150 platform at all, even though it was still considered an F-series truck. Instead of the aero look, it was more boldly angular with a raised hood and lowered fenders, somewhat like fender / hood medium truck style pioneered by the 1994 Dodge Ram pickup. An industry first, 2 big massive complete ring-style front tow hooks. The side windows went lower forward in the door like a commercial medium to heavy duty truck (similar to a Kenworth “Daylight Door”), and the grille was also narrower and tall as if from a larger truck, and in 2001, optional manual telescoping Trailer Tow (TT) mirrors became available.
