The Eagle Vision was a full-size, front-wheel drive sports sedan. It was produced by the Chrysler Corporation, and sold under the Eagle marque from 1993 to 1997 as the replacement to the AMC/Renault-designed Eagle Premier (from which the Vision was derived). It is similar to the first generation Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS and Chrysler New Yorker. The Vision, Intrepid, Concorde, LHS and New Yorker are collectively designated the LH: Chrysler’s codename for the platform which underpinned them. The Eagle Vision was badged as the Chrysler Vision in Europe. The Vision debuted at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It was on Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list for 1994, and along with the other LH sedans was Automobile Magazine Automobile of the Year in 1993.

The appearance is based on the 1987 concept Lamborghini Portofino’s revolutionary design, called “cab forward.” The cab-forward design is characterized by the long, low slung windshield and relatively short overhangs. The wheels are effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time. The aerodynamic shape makes for little wind noise inside this large car. This sleek styling gives the Vision a low drag coefficient (0.31) which was ahead of its time.

Without badges, the Vision could relatively easily pass as a (first generation) Concorde. The main difference between the two are the taillight clusters. With a nod toward the European sedans it was marketed to compete with, the Vision incorporates amber turn signals rather than the Concorde’s red. The Vision also does not have the Concorde’s rear lightbar between the two taillights. The Vision and Concorde share the same headlights but the Vision’s grille is smaller. The Dodge Intrepid, on the other hand, features completely different head and taillights and has no grille at all.

The Vision’s monochromatic design inside and out, which includes the absence of any brand or model badge on the doors (as found on the Concorde) and available aluminum wheels that feature a simple, clean design, was said to lend a European flavor to the car’s overall appearance. The single color design is more pronounced on models that do not feature the two-toned paint scheme (which sported a grey lower break).

The upscale TSi models featured leather-trimmed seats, steering wheels, shift knobs and door inserts. Passenger comfort items include rear seat vents, center rear armrest, 8-way power driver and passenger seats, as well as personal reading lamps. Driving performance with the standard 3.5 L V6 engine on the TSi versions provides plenty of snap off the line, and highway passing power is excellent, while acceleration with the 3.3-liter engine is adequate but somewhat sluggish.[1]

The Eagle Talon was one of three model names given to a sports coupe that was manufactured between 1989 and 1998 and sold by the then Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors of Japan in a joint 50/50 corporate venture known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). The Talon was sold under the Eagle marque, a brand developed by Chrysler to compete with Japanese imports in the late 1980s after purchasing American Motors in 1987. The other two sister models were the Eclipse (sold by Mitsubishi) and the Laser (sold by Plymouth, another Chrysler brand). Note that both the “Eagle” and “Plymouth” brand names have since been discontinued.

All three vehicles were built on the same platform at the DSM manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois. All three vehicles were mechanically identical (when comparing the same option level) including engine, transmission, and drivetrain. Cosmetically, differences between the three were found in wheels, availability of colors, tail lights, front and rear bumpers, and spoilers. The primary way to establish the identity of an Eagle Talon is its two-tone body color – the ‘greenhouse’ (roof, pillars, door-mounted mirrors) was always black regardless of the body color (Note: 1G Eclipses with a 2.0 L engine also have black ‘greenhouse’ roofs). The basic characteristics of the Eagle Talon are:

The first generation Talon was released in mid-1989 as a 1990 model and ran through 1994. This era of DSM vehicles is commonly referred to as the first generation, or “1G” for short. However, there were two 1G styles. The “1GA” models of 1990-1991 featured pop-up headlights lights and a “6-bolt” engine, while the “1GB” model of 1992-1994 featured composite style headlights with integrated turn signals.

The 1993-1994 base model DL was front-wheel drive and used a 92-horsepower 1.8 L engine (4G37). The ES model (or just the base Talon before 1993) sported a naturally aspirated 2.0 L 135 hp Mitsubishi 4G63 engine. The TSi and TSi AWD models used the same engine but added an intercooled Mitsubishi 14b turbocharger producing 11.06 psi of peak boost from the factory, resulting in 195 horsepower on TSi AWD models. The front-drive TSi produced only 190 due to a more restrictive exhaust system, and the automatics produced 180 due to a 13g turbo.

The “6-bolt” engine on all Talons built before April 1992 refers to the number of bolts connecting the flywheel to the crankshaft. All 1G Talons built after April 1992.5 received a freer revving “7-bolt” engine borrowed from the 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution’s lighter rods and 7-bolt crankshaft.

The Eagle Summit was a subcompact car produced by Mitsubishi Motors from 1989 to 1996. It was sold as a captive import by the Jeep-Eagle sales division that was created after Chrysler Corporation purchased American Motors (AMC) in 1987. The Summit was one of the passenger car lines to expand the marketing mix of the Jeep dealer sales and service network in North America.

The Eagle Summit joined the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Colt in Chrysler’s Mitsubishi Mirage clone club starting in 1989, coinciding with the release of the Mirage’s third generation. It lasted through the extent of the Mirage’s fourth generation, which ended in 1996. The somewhat related Eagle Summit Wagon (which was a compact MPV) ran from 1992-1996 and was based on the Mitsubishi RVR.
