The big news for the 2009 Dodge Durango is the addition of a hybrid model that combines V8 power with V6-like fuel efficiency. For the regular Durango line, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 makes more power for 2009 with no fuel-economy penalty, thanks to cylinder deactivation. Sirius Backseat TV is now included with the rear-seat entertainment system. The Adventurer trim level has been discontinued, while the SXT trim level is renamed SE.

Truck-based chassis. Fifteen mpg combined fuel economy. Less passenger space than a big crossover. With all of that going against it, the 2009 Dodge Durango is looking like a dinosaur in the final moments before that comet smacked into Yucatan. A new “two-mode” hybrid model is a last-minute attempt to adapt to a changing climate, but it seems unlikely to sway many people interested in purchasing an SUV.

The current-generation Durango debuted five years ago, and it follows the traditional SUV playbook with a body-on-frame design (rather than the increasingly more common carlike unit-body design of crossover SUVs) and rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. This rugged construction lends itself better to towing and off-roading. Among midsize and full-size SUVs, the Durango is a “Goldilocks” choice: bigger than choices like a Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder, but smaller than something like a Chevrolet Tahoe. It’s also one of the most powerful choices you’ll find. Its optional Hemi 5.7-liter V8 engine cranks out an impressive 376 horsepower. As expected, fuel economy is pretty dismal, though this big V8 features cylinder deactivation technology, helping return fuel economy no worse than the Durango’s smaller V6 and V8 power plants.

For the best fuel economy, there is the new-for-2009 Dodge Durango HEV hybrid. Utilizing so-called “two-mode” hybrid technology co-developed by General Motors, BMW and the company formerly known as Daimler-Chrysler, this powertrain features a detuned version of the Hemi, plus a pair of potent electric motors and a trick transmission with variable gear ratios, which maximizes the efficiency of both power sources. The result is combined fuel economy of about 20 mpg, a 5-mpg increase over a regular 5.7-liter V8-equipped Durango. Unfortunately, all that hybrid hardware jacks the Durango’s price up by approximately $5,000 over the similarly equipped non-hybrid Limited trim level. Even after federal tax credits, it could take years to recoup the cost purely through fuel savings.

The Dodge Durango is really only a viable choice for those who need loads of family space and the ability to tow heavy objects. And if that’s the case, the bigger Chevy Tahoe is a better pick anyway. Meanwhile, newer crossover vehicles like the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Flex and Mazda CX-9 offer more passenger-friendly accommodations, the same or more cargo capacity and good fuel economy. The Durango Hybrid matches them in the last regard but is considerably more expensive. Overall, we think most SUV shoppers will find something better suited to their needs than a 2009 Durango.

“This thing rides like a truck.” That’s not a compliment, and it’s usually applied to vehicles with harsh, unsophisticated rides that are more Conestoga wagon than Cadillac. Buyers of full-size pickups have long assumed that such discomfort just comes with the territory. The 2009 Dodge Ram could be the impetus for changing those expectations.

For reasons too numerous to list, full-size pickups have always had leaf-spring rear suspensions, a design that sandwiches strips of steel together to locate the rear axle and to support the truck’s weight. It’s an inexpensive, durable and time-tested design, but it also causes jerky rear-axle motions that make it difficult to keep the rubber on the road if the surface is less than glass-smooth. In simpler terms, leaf springs and respectable ride comfort don’t mix.

The 2009 Ram 1500 is the first full-size pickup that throws leaf springs into the time capsule. Instead, it has a heavy-duty coil rear suspension that not only results in a remarkably civilized ride, but also saves weight, enables the fitment of a rear antiroll bar and improves off-road performance. Don’t expect buttery smoothness — the springs still need to be sturdy enough to sustain the Ram’s massive hauling and towing capabilities, so some jiggling over bumps and freeway hop is inevitable. But for a full-size truck, the Ram’s relaxed ride is revolutionary.

Elsewhere, the Ram’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine receives a boost in power, clocking in at an impressive 390 horsepower. Fuel economy is better too, thanks to an improved cylinder deactivation system and a more aerodynamic body. In fact, the 5.7-liter engine gets the same gas mileage as the weakling base V6. The Ram’s interior has also been drastically improved, while a number of neat storage options are introduced. A more traditional crew cab replaces the old Ram’s Mega Cab, after many customers complained that it was just too mega. While smaller, the new crew cab still boasts limolike rear legroom, though the storage area behind the backseat has been eliminated.

In sum, we think the 2009 Dodge Ram is a winner, even if the popularity of full-size trucks is waning. For those who’ll still need the prodigious hauling and towing capabilities of these workhorse vehicles, the Ram is just as good as, if not better than, the current top dogs, the Chevy Silverado and Toyota Tundra. It’s got all the usual bases covered, yet it doesn’t “ride like a truck.” Now that’s what we call progress, particularly given the cutthroat competition in this segment.

Thanks to the massive press coverage of last year’s Dodge Challenger rebirth, you probably know as much about it as we do. But in case you missed all those headline road tests featuring the burnt-orange car, here’s the skinny. Borrowing heavily from the styling of the original 1970-’74 Challenger, the reborn version sports similar lines and proportions. But you needn’t worry about the 2009 Dodge Challenger merely being a poser’s visual link to the past — it can be had with Hemi V8 power, rear-wheel drive and the right sound burbling from its rectangular exhausts.

The Challenger is based on Chrysler’s LX platform, which is also used for the 300 and Charger sedans. Its wheelbase is 4 inches shorter than the Charger’s, though with a 2-ton curb weight, the newer model is frighteningly similar to its forebear in terms of sheer bulk. Of course, the 2009 Challenger has features that previous Mopar designers could hardly have dreamed about, such as stability control, side curtain airbags and an available hard-drive-based navigation system that can also store music and video files. The new Challenger also differs by being fairly athletic and able to go around corners without scraping the Goodyear lettering off the tires.

Last year, Dodge offered just one model — the top-level SRT8. For 2009, Dodge expands the Challenger family with a couple of less intimidating alternatives that make this retro-styled sport coupe more accessible to the masses. Starting things off is the new base Challenger, fitted with a V6 engine and four-speed automatic, a pairing as ill-suited as Charlize Theron and Gilbert Gottfried. You’ll get 250 hp and a 25-mpg highway rating from this powertrain, but considering that you’re stuck with four speeds, it’s hardly set up for optimal efficiency. Sitting between the base car and the SRT8 is the best pick of the bunch: the new R/T, with its 370-hp V8. This year also brings back another Mopar icon, a pistol-grip-shifted manual gearbox. Available on the V8 cars, this tranny features six speeds.

Considering that the resurrected Camaro is set to debut next year, Dodge’s preemptive strike with this full family of Challengers couldn’t have come at a better time. And considering the cost of gasoline nowadays, we imagine the V6 model will be fairly popular. Overall, we like how the 2009 Dodge Challenger impressively combines the visceral and visual excitement of the past with modern engineering, safety and convenience features. Yes, there is competition in the form of the upcoming Camaro and the Ford Mustang. But for a modern take on the old muscle car, the Challenger certainly gets almost all of it right.

The Dodge Viper is a V10-powered sports car manufactured by the Dodge division of Chrysler LLC. Production of the two seat sports car began at New Mack Assembly in 1992 and moved to its current home at Conner Avenue Assembly in October 1995. The car, as well as numerous variations of it, has made countless appearances in TV shows, video games, movies, and music videos. All generations had the same 6-speed manual transmission.

The Viper was conceived as a historical take on the classic American sports car. The iconic AC Cobra was a source of inspiration, and the final version of the Viper bears this out with its powerful engine, minimalist straightforward design, muscular and aggressive styling, and high performance. Some saw claims to kinship with the Cobra as a marketing exercise, ignoring that Carroll Shelby was heavily involved in the initial design of the Viper, and subsequent design of the Viper GTS coupe. Notably, the later (1996 through 2002) Viper GTS coupe took a few design cues from the Pete Brock designed Shelby Cobra Daytona. Though the proportions seem similar at first glance, the designs are quite unique. Carrol Shelby was key in the development of the R/T 10 as well as having a hand in the development of the GTS model.

The Viper was initially conceived in late 1988 at Chrysler’s Advanced Design Studios. The following February, Chrysler president Bob Lutz suggested to Tom Gale at Chrysler Design that the company should consider producing a modern Cobra, and a clay model was presented to Lutz a few months later. The car appeared as a concept at the North American International Auto Show in 1989. This concept vehicle was originally named Copperhead because of its low, wide appearance characteristic of reptiles. All engines for the Viper have since been known as “copperhead”. The name would later be changed to Viper. Public reaction was so enthusiastic, that chief engineer Roy Sjeoberg was directed to develop it as a standard production vehicle.

Sjoberg selected 85 engineers to be “Team Viper”, with development beginning in March 1989. The team asked the then-Chrysler subsidiary Lamborghini to cast some prototype aluminum blocks based on Dodge’s V10 truck engine for sports car use in May. The production body was completed in the fall, with a chassis prototype running in December. Though a V8 was first used in the test mule, the V10, which the production car was meant to use, was ready in February 1990.

Official approval from Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca came in May 1990. One year later, Carroll Shelby piloted a pre-production car as the pace vehicle in the Indianapolis 500 race. In November 1991, the car was released to reviewers with first retail shipments beginning in January 1992.

The Dodge Stratus (and its twins, the Chrysler Cirrus and Plymouth Breeze; collectively known as the “Cloud Cars”) was a mid-size 4-door sedan introduced in 1995. It was based on the Chrysler JA platform Cab forward (car). The Stratus, Breeze, and Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. Production ended at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in early 2006 which had built 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.[1]The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.

The Dodge Stratus, the middle entry of the JA platform (with the Cirrus being the higher-end model and the Breeze being the lower-end model), was introduced in 1995 with two models: the base (later renamed SE in 2000), which came standard with the 2.0 L straight-4 and had the SOHC 2.4 L as optional; and the ES, which came standard with the a 2.0 L from 1995-1997, and had a DOHC 2.4 L and a 2.5 L V6 as optional. In 1998 the 2.4 L was standard and the 2.5 L V6 was optional on the ES, and from 1999-2000, the 2.5 L V6 was the only engine on the ES model.

The Stratus directly replaced the high-volume Dodge Spirit to favorable reviews, but lower sales. It was often compared to other small mid-sizes such as the Chevrolet Malibu, and judged roomier than the Ford Contour by many magazines such as Consumer Reports. While the extended Ks had previously been Chrysler’s main midsize offerings, the larger LH and LX platforms, conceived as replacements for the Dodge Dynasty and Dodge Monaco, would more directly compete with the Ford Taurus, the upsized Honda Accord and Chevrolet Lumina.

The cars had many parts that were interchangeable between each model. The exteriors of these three cars were very similar, with the front fascia, rear bumper, taillights, and wheels being the main differences. The interiors had little variation between the three models, being almost identical, save for the name on the steering wheel, and a few available options.

All three variants of the platform were available with most of the same standard features and available options, such as the following: a four-speed automatic transmission and an optional semi-automatic dubbed “Autostick” (not available on the Plymouth Breeze), anti-lock brakes, four wheel independent double wishbone suspension, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power driver’s seat, leather seats, power antenna, a six CD changer, sunroof, remote keyless entry, anti-theft system, etc. A five-speed manual was available with the 2.0 L engine.

A turbocharged version of the Stratus was sold in Mexico, with the 2.4 L DOHC 4-cylinder engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick. This car had 168 hp (125 kW) at 5200 rpm and 216 lb·ft (293 N·m) of torque at 2200 rpm.

The Dodge SRT-4 is a turbocharged variant of the Neon[1] introduced by DaimlerChrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) in-house tuner group (originally known as PVO for Performance Vehicle Operations) in 2003 and sold under the Dodge marque. SRT stands for “Street and Racing Technology”, and the “4″ in the SRT-4′s name denotes the number of cylinders of the engine. ACR and Commemorative Edition models were later introduced as well. The SRT-4 was marketed towards the racing and muscle car crowd[citation needed], as well as designed to attract younger buyers who had previously only considered owning Japanese sport compacts. Dodge, through its parts distribution network Mopar, also offers many performance enhancements for the SRT-4, from suspension kits to engine performance upgrade kits. The engine performance kits were made available for all three years from 2003 to 2005. Stage 1 for the 2003 model included an upgraded PCM as well as larger injectors. The 2004 and 2005 stage one only contained the upgraded PCM because the cars came stock with upgraded injectors. The stage 2 upgrages for all three years included the stage 2 PCM, 682 cc/min fuel injectors (a 30% increase), wastegate actuator, 3.0 bar TIP sensor, and turbo toys could be purchased as well for the stage 2 and stage 3 for all three years. The stage 3 engine upgraddes for all three years also contained the same components and if purchased, transformed an already fast car into a complete beast. The stage 3 kit includes everything that the stage 2 includes but it also comes with a larger turbo and manifold to achieve 310 horsepower at 5600 RPM or if you have the turbo toys in high octane mode you will be pushing 355 horsepower at 5200 RPM.

Built in Belvidere, Illinois with 84% US content, the SRT-4 differed from the Neon, the model on which it was based, in many ways. The SRT-4′s entire powertrain (engine and transmission), suspension, braking system, exhaust, wheels, tires, and a small portion of the interior were upgraded from the Neon. On the outside, the SRT-4′s unique front fascia and hood featuring a functional hood scoop was distinctly different. The car also featured side skirts, a unique rear fascia, large rear wing, and model specific 17×6 inch wheels.

Under the hood was a turbocharged 2.4-liter straight-4 gasoline engine. This engine debuted in the United States alongside the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT (as the A853 engine), but the SRT-4 version (A855 engine) had a unique intake manifold to package the engine in the neon engine bay. The SRT-4 used a New Venture Gear T-850 five-speed manual transmission (based on the unit from the European turbodiesel minivans), equal-length half shafts, and a high-capacity Sachs performance clutch. The suspension used stiffer springs, SRT tuned Tokico struts, larger sway bars front and rear, a unique steering gear, PT Cruiser steering knuckles, and a unique K-member. 11.0-inch (279 mm) vented disc brakes (with extra-thick rotors to prevent warping) were used in front, with 10.6 in (270 mm) non-vented discs in the rear.

Inside, the front seats featured enhanced lumbar and lateral support for performance driving, and a faux carbon fiber steering wheel shiftboot cover and satin silver “cue ball” shift knob were used. The gauges had special SRT faces and silver rings matching those on the climate controls. An Auto-Meter brand boost gauge was used as well. The front windows are power operated, while the rear windows are manual.

The 2004 model was updated with more power and torque, a torque-sensing Quaife limited-slip differential, larger fuel injectors, BF Goodrich KDW2 three-season ultra-high performance tires, newer engine management hardware, and paint and trim changes. 2005 also featured new colors and the return of the American Club Racer (ACR) edition. The ACR package included wider 16″x7″ BBS RX lightweight racing wheels with wider 225/45R16 B.F. Goodrich KDW2 tires, 5-position rebound adjustable Tokico Illumina shock absorbers, a thicker rear sway bar, front seats with pass-through slots for racing harnesses, increased allowable front camber adjustment, and ACR logos on the exterior and embroidered on the front seats. The struts on the ACR also used common spring seat height locations as a base Neon, which lowered the front 10 mm (0.4 in) and the rear 23.5 mm (0.9 in) from a base SRT-4. A limited edition and numbered 2005 SRT-4 Commemorative Edition appearance package (in white with blue “Viper stripes”) was also offered, but not with the ACR package.

The Dodge Spirit was introduced in January 1989 as a mid-size 5/6 passenger sedan by Dodge. It immediately replaced the similarly sized 600.[1] Many automotive references also regard the Spirit as the de facto replacement for the somewhat smaller Aries and the hatchback Lancer.[2][3][4]

The “Spirit” model name was previously used by American Motors — which Chrysler bought in 1987 — for a subcompact car called the AMC Spirit from 1979 to 1983. The Dodge Spirit sold 60,000 cars in its first year[citation needed], strong enough that Aries production was stopped mid-season. Production ended on December 9, 1994 when the Spirit was replaced by the “cab-forward” Stratus.

The Spirit could seat six with an optional front split-bench seat. It had a relatively large trunk, a simple solid-beam rear axle, and a MacPherson strut front suspension. The Spirit differed from the other A-bodies primarily in the grille and rear lamp styling, and in the exclusive availability of a sportier, higher-performing version — the R/T.

While the Spirit could be compared in size to the Ford Tempo, the platform was also compared with the Ford Taurus, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry by Consumer Reports[citation needed] which found the similar but upscale Chrysler LeBaron to be “adequate”, but not up to the other three cars. Nevertheless, they sold relatively well, but mainly on the basis of price and value. Though maligned in their later years by critics, the Spirit did outsell the critically acclaimed later Stratus.

The Spirit was Dodge’s version of the Chrysler AA platform, a stretched variation of the Chrysler K platform. They were assembled in Newark, Delaware and Toluca, Mexico. They shared their basic design with the 1990 to 1994 Chrysler LeBaron sedan, the 1989 to 1995 Plymouth Acclaim, and the export-only Chrysler Saratoga.
