The Daewoo Nubira is a compact car produced by South Korean automaker Daewoo Motors from 1997 to 2002.

The first generation car, model J100, was released to the market in 1997 as Daewoo Nubira, and it was sold until 1999. The car takes its name from the Korean word Nubira, which means “to go everywhere”. It was developed as a replacement for the GM T platform-based Daewoo Nexia and designed by Italian I.DE.A Institute. Both sedan and station wagon models were available.

In 2000, the first generation underwent over 90 improvements and was re-released as model J150. In Korean market, J150 was marketed as Daewoo Nubira II. Examples of these include an increase in passenger space and reduction in noise, harshness and vibration, particularly from the engine by adding a fourth engine mount and by tuning the intake resonators. In addition, the exterior design was reworked by Daewoo’s Worthing Technical Centre in the United Kingdom, creating a more dynamic image.

All Nubiras had a choice of 1.6 or 2.0-litre I4 petrol engines: no diesel version was ever offered.

In 2003, Nubira was replaced by Daewoo Lacetti (model J200), a new Pininfarina-designed sedan, was unveiled, and the expansion of the lineup followed by a presentation of the new station wagon in 2004. However, in some European market, the Nubira name was kept for the sedans and the station wagons.

The Nubira was sold in the United States and Canada from 1999-2002, when it would be replaced by the 2004 Suzuki Forenza/Reno in the United States, and in Canada as the Chevrolet Optra (also introduced in 2004). The hatchback is one of the rarest models of the Daewoos sold in the United States.

The Nubira was briefly produced from CKD kits on Taganrog, Russia TagAZ factory; it was marketed as the Doninvest Orion.

The Daewoo Magnus is a mid-size sedan developed and manufactured by Daewoo Motors until its purchase by General Motors, and now built for GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) by Daewoo Incheon Motor Company at its Bupyeong facility in South Korea. GM Daewoo and other GM divisions, as well as GMDAT stake holder Suzuki, have been marketing this car under different badges in various countries. The car is also known under its internal Daewoo designation of V200. The Project Manager was Dr. W.J Lee.

The V200 is a further development of the Daewoo Leganza (model V100), based on a stretched platform of that model. Launched in 2000, it was sold alongside the Leganza in Korea until the end of V100′s production in 2002, when it also superseded it in export markets. The V200 itself has been given an extensive facelift for 2006, which resulted in the model known as V250, or Daewoo Tosca in Korea. The V250 will completely supersede all versions of the V200 during 2006.

The Evanda comes equipped with the Daewoo-developed XK6 inline-6 engine (DOHC 24V, 155 hp (116 kW) at 5800 rpm, 177 lb·ft (240 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm – Canadian specification) or a Holden-built 2.0L E-TEC II Inline-4 (DOHC 16V) carried over from the Leganza. ItalDesign of Italy was responsible for the styling and design of both the Leganza and Magnus. However, the upcoming V250 was styled in Korea by GM Daewoo.

The V200 was marketed as Daewoo Evanda in Western Europe, and Chevrolet Evanda in many Eastern European countries where GM did not use the Daewoo brand, as locally-manufactured versions of old Daewoo models were still sold under that marque. The Evanda replaced the Leganza, and also the Chevrolet Alero. Later, in 2004, the entire Daewoo brand was replaced by Chevrolet in all Europe, with models renamed accordingly.

The Evanda was also badge-engineered as the Suzuki Verona in the United States and Canada, and Chevrolet Epica in other markets including China and Arabia. However, Suzuki announced it would drop the Verona after the 2006 model year due to poor sales.[1]

The Daewoo Leganza was a mid-size sedan produced by the former Daewoo Motors in South Korea between 1997 and 2002. Its internal development name was V100, under which it and its platform (not directly shared with any other model) are also known.

Daewoo explained that the name Leganza originated from the combination of two Italian words – elegante (elegant) and forza (power).

The Leganza was a part of Daewoo’s effort to develop a lineup of proprietary vehicles to replace previous GM-licensed models. Sister projects to the V100 are the T100 Daewoo Lanos and J100 Daewoo Nubira. The development of “x100″ cars involved the work of many subcontractors and suppliers. This involved, among others, ZF with regard to transmissions and Holden concerning the engines.

Leganza was styled by the famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign. It is believed that this design was inspired by Giugiaro’s 1990 Jaguar Kensington concept car, a pedigree Leganza’s body shares with the 1991 Toyota Aristo. In case of Leganza, however, Giugiaro had to deal with a shorter vehicle with front-wheel rather than rear-wheel drive, which, combined with Daewoo’s styling cues like the large chrome grille, resulted in a very peculiar appearance.

Daewoo rapidly expanded their distribution network with the inception of new models, which made the Leganza present in the markets of most countries, albeit not necessarily with sales success. Daewoo placed special emphasis on developing markets, which involved the assembly of Leganzas in countries like Poland, Romania, Russia and Uzbekistan, in plants owned by Daewoo or under license agreements. Nevertheless, this concerned CKD or SKD assembly only, as all Leganzas were effectively made at Daewoo’s Bupyong plant in Korea.

The Daewoo Lanos was a subcompact car manufactured by the Korean automaker Daewoo Motors from 1997 to 2002, and still made under a license agreement by the Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych (FSO) in Poland, marketed as FSO Lanos, and assembled in Ukraine in modified versions known as Daewoo Sens and Chevrolet Lanos. For a brief period, it was also assembled by TagAZ in Russia, marketed as Doninvest Assol. The Lanos was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and featured three body styles – 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks and a 4-door sedan. Lanos was designed to replace Daewoo Nexia in the Daewoo lineup and was itself replaced by Daewoo Kalos.

In 1992, Daewoo dissolved its joint-venture with General Motors, and simultaneously a decision was made to independently develop replacements for the contemporary Daewoo Motors products, based on older General Motors models. The Lanos development programme was formally started in autumn 1993, with the goal to create a car to replace Daewoo Nexia as Daewoo’s small family car. [1]

The project began with a comparative study of competing models from 20 different manufacturers, with Toyota Tercel, Opel Astra and Volkswagen Golf identified as most competitive. Four design studios were commissioned to deliver clay models preseting their ideas for the new model’s styling. Giorgetto Giugiaro’s design was chosen, and Italdesign was commissioned to develop the car’s final outside and interior styling. The technical side of the project was conducted simultaneously by Daewoo’s development centre Korea as well as suppliers and contractors, who were involved in developing particular components. This included AC Rochester (engine componentry), Delco Chassis Division (brakes, including ABS), GM Powertrain (automatic transmission), Italdesign (body, structural analysis, electrics, prototype construction), PARS Passive Rückhaltesysteme GmbH (airbags) and Porsche (vehicle concept — research, structural analysis, suspension and brake components,and experimental production supervision).[1]

By the end of 1995, 150 prototypes were built (providing for three body styles). The development programme involved extensive testing in a multitude of locations. Safety test included high-speed stability and durability testing in England and brake testing on the Großglockner in Austria. Low-temperature testing was conducted in Canada, Sweden (Arjeplog) and Russia (Moscow, Khabarovsk), while high-temperature tests took place in the USA (Death Valley), Oman (Nizwa), Australia (Alice Springs), Spain (Barcelona) and Italy (Nardò). The programme was completed in a remarkable time of only 30 months from the approval to the commencement of large-scale production of the Lanos sedan for the Korean market. European-market production began in 1997.).[1]

The cars were equipped with GM Family 1 D-TEC I4 engines ranging from 1.5 L (1549 cc) SOHC to 1.6 L (1598 cc) DOHC. In the UK there are also E-TEC models 1.4 (1349 cc) and 1.6 (1598 cc). The suspension is built upon that of a Daewoo Nexia, as used in Vauxhall/Opel Astra Mk2 GTE.

The Daewoo Lacetti is a compact car made by the South Korean automaker GM Daewoo since 2002. The first generation Lacetti was available as a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback or a five-door station wagon. The sedan and wagon were designed by Pininfarina, and the hatchback by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The hatchback, known as Lacetti-5 in South Korea, was introduced in summer 2003. A facelift version was released in 2005.

In 2008 the second generation Lacetti launched, being a badge engineered version of the Chevrolet Cruze.

In Australia and New Zealand, the Daewoo Lacetti was briefly sold between 2003 and 2004 as a four-door sedan. During the ‘Asian Economic Crisis’, Daewoo became technically insolvent and the company withdrew from the Australian market.

From 2005, the Lacetti (sedan and wagon) and Lacetti 5 were sold together as the Holden Viva. It was introduced at around the same time as the Daewoo Kalos-based Holden Barina. Unlike the current Barina, however, the Viva is meant to be below the premium Holden Astra as a budget alternative.

The Daewoo Kalos is a subcompact automobile manufactured by GM Daewoo (the South Korean subsidiary of General Motors) introduced in 2002 and marketed globally in 120 countries — prominently as the Chevrolet Aveo[1] (ah-VAY-o).[2]

Marketed worldwide under five GM brands and eleven different nameplates, the Kalos vehicles have evolved through two re-stylings in the car’s first generation and have featured three body styles and five engine configurations — all built on a dedicated platform shared with no other vehicles. The two styling iterations are called T200 and T250 — deriving from the internal coding used by first Daewoo and then GM Daewoo during the car’s development.

The nameplate “Kalos” derives from the Greek word kalos (?a???) for “beautiful”.[3]

The original Daewoo Kalos was introduced in 2002, based on a then-new Daewoo platform named T200, replacing the Daewoo Lanos (T100). Under development before Daewoo’s bankruptcy, the Kalos was the company’s first new model introduction following its subsequent takeover by General Motors.[4] Manufacture of the Kalos began in early March, 2002 [4], with pre-production prototypes shown at the Geneva Auto Show in April 2002.

Originally designed by Italdesign Giugiaro, the Kalos derives directly from the Kalos Dream concept vehicle first presented at the 2000 Paris Motor Show and subsequent developmental concepts at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, 2002 Geneva Auto Show, and 2003 at the Geneva Show. (Kalos Dream photos) During this three-year development period Daewoo was struggling financially, with the ultimate fate of the company and the concept vehicle remaining uncertain.
