Exotic-car performance for real-world money, daily-driver functionality, surprisingly respectable fuel economy.

Not as nimble and communicative as some competitors, interior lacks pizzazz, Z06 and ZR1 look too much like the standard Corvette.

The big news this year is the late introduction of the Corvette ZR1, which boasts a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 producing 638 horsepower. It’s the most powerful (and expensive) road-going Corvette ever. The rest of the Corvette lineup heads into 2009 with just minor changes, the most significant of which is the availability of Bluetooth phone connectivity.

If you tell the average person that you bought a new 2009 Corvette, they’ll likely scrunch up their face, as if they’d just gotten a whiff from a bad carton of milk. “Really, a Corvette?” they’ll say. It seems there’s a certain stereotype associated with America’s sports car, one that involves a midlife crisis and gold chains on exposed chest hair, possibly accompanied by visions of the hideous Vette Mark Hamill drove in “Corvette Summer.” However, you can reply with this: “Corvette Summer” was 21 years ago, gold chains haven’t come back into fashion yet and the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette has nothing to do with the stereotypes — it’s simply a fantastic sports car.

While there are certainly historical kernels of truth in this stereotype, most of them were excised with the debut of the model’s sixth generation (the C6) for 2005. Last year, Chevrolet made further improvements, including more power and a better interior. Even the stats for the base Corvette are enough to drool over. The 6.2-liter V8 cranks out 430 hp, just 50 hp shy of the almighty Porsche 911 Turbo. The track-ready Z06 model puts out even more power (505 hp) and weighs less than 3,200 pounds.

If this isn’t enough, there’s an additional model being added to the 2009 lineup: the ZR1. The ZR1 moniker was last seen from 1990-’95 (when it was spelled “ZR-1″) and represented the ultimate in Corvette performance. The new ZR1 starts with a hand-assembled, supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that cranks out 638 hp and 604 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful production Corvette ever — and one of the most powerful cars ever, period. Naturally, there are further modifications, such as a strengthened transmission, specialized wheels and tires, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, unique suspension tuning with adaptive dampers and additional carbon-fiber body panels for weight reduction.

Even if “all” the 2009 Corvette provided was performance equal to high-dollar exotics but at half the price, it would still be high on our list of recommended cars. But a surprising level of utility comes along for the ride, too. The Corvette offers a massive amount of luggage space and a user-friendly cockpit, along with enough ride compliance for daily-driving duty. There’s also a convertible body style for those who want to catch more rays (or hear more from that voracious V8), and even fuel economy isn’t too shabby — a standard Corvette has an EPA highway estimate of 26 mpg, the same as an upscale Chevy Malibu.

Our quibbles with the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette are few, though they may be significant for those who expect world-class refinement at the Vette’s elevated price point. Although the interior features a soft-touch dashboard material, it still looks rather plain and there are too many chintzy plastics. Nor can the Corvette provide the nimble and engaging handling offered by European sports cars, or the brutal effectiveness of Nissan’s new GT-R. But for many shoppers in this segment, these will likely be minor issues. Put down the gold chains and don’t worry about the scrunched noses — the stereotypes are long gone for America’s sports car.

The Chevrolet Venture was a minivan produced by General Motors from the 1997 to 2005 model years. It replaced the Chevrolet Lumina APV. Visually identical minivans were also sold in Europe as the Opel Sintra, and in the UK, they were badged as a Vauxhall. Opel assisted in the development of the minivan as well. Up until 2005, Chevrolet Europe sold a few models, mostly United States domestic market (USDM) models modified to suit European regulations. Among them were the Chevrolet Trans Sport (which was a Chevrolet Venture with the front end of the Pontiac Trans Sport). During the 2005 model year, the Venture (along with the Astro) was replaced by the similar “new” 2005 Chevrolet Uplander. The Venture (along with other GM minivans) was built in Doraville, Georgia.

The Venture was introduced to the market in 1996 for the 1997 model year as a replacement for the radically styled Lumina APV. In the United States, it was also sold as the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Pontiac Trans Sport, which was later renamed as the Pontiac Montana for 1999. The Venture and its siblings were powered by GM’s 3.4 L LA1 V6, rated at 180 hp (134 kW). After 1999, the engine was slightly redesigned to produce an extra 5 hp (4 kW), for a total of 185 hp (138 kW). All Ventures used a four-speed automatic transmission. A Warner Brothers edition, introduced in 2000, included leather seats, Warner Brothers badging with Bugs Bunny leaning against the Warner Brothers logo, and a DVD entertainment system, a novelty at the time.

The exterior was refreshed in 2001, and all-wheel drive was introduced in 2002. Reviews and sales were generally lukewarm, especially about the relatively narrow cabin due to being designed for European roads. The vans came in both short and long wheelbases, and all-wheel drive versions like the Chrysler minivans. The third row bench seat was designed to fold flat, but forming a higher floor unlike the Honda and Mazda minivans that folded into a well behind the third row.

The Venture was replaced after 2005 by the Chevrolet Uplander, which was essentially a facelift with one long wheelbase configuration, and a longer nose which served chiefly to improve crush distance and styling more like an SUV. Only the long-wheelbase Venture was sold for 2005.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 1997 Chevy Venture a rating of four stars out of five in a head-on collision. Tests on subsequent model years yielded results of four stars in most categories, and three or five stars in others. The NHTSA does not conduct offset frontal crash tests.

The Chevrolet Uplander is a Minivan introduced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors, replacing the Venture and Astro. It is known as one of the first crossovers between the minivan and the SUV. Although introduced for the 2005 model year, it overlapped with the final model years of the Venture (on which the Uplander is heavily based) and Astro. It is built on the same platform as the Saturn Relay, Buick Terraza, and Pontiac Montana SV6. The van is built near Atlanta, Georgia. On November 21, 2005, GM announced that it would close the Doraville, Georgia assembly plant, which produces the Uplander, in late 2008.

Of the four vehicles sharing this platform, there are few differences. The most significant of these is the offering of an integrated child seat in the Uplander LS and that, in the U.S. market, the Uplander is offered in two wheelbases and a cargo version. Suggested retail price for the Uplander ranges from US$21,250–33,795, depending on options. The Uplander is exported to Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the Middle East. It was also the last minivan to be sold in two wheelbases for the Canadian market, since the short-wheelbase Kia Sedona isn’t sold there.

The four minivans all share a common platform and come equipped with a standard MP3/CD player. The Uplander and its siblings are all similarly styled, trying to appear more SUV-like with their relatively long, level hoods and tall front fascias.

2005: The Uplander was initially offered with 3.5 L High Value 3500 LX9 V6 that generates 200 hp (149 kW) and 220 ft·lbf (298 N·m).
2006: A 3.9 L LZ9 V6, with 240 hp (179 kW) and 240ft·lbf (332 Nm) torque, was added as an option. The GM logo was added to the front doors.
2007: The 3.5 L V6 was dropped, leaving the 3.9 L as the base engine. Consequently, the optional AWD system was also dropped, since it could not handle the torque of the 3.9 L engine. A flex-fuel version of the 3.9 L V6 also became available for 2007.
2008: The Uplander’s last year for the USA, although production continues for export to Canada and Mexico until the 2009 model year, when General Motors will be closing the Doraville, Georgia plant where it is produced on 26 September 2008 when the final vehicle rolled off the assembly line (a Canadian Version of a 2009 Pontiac Montana SV6 Short-Wheel-Base in Liquid Silver Metallic) and was replaced by the Chevrolet Traverse Crossover Vehicle. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Chevrolet Uplander has an improved crash test rating than its predecessor, the Venture. The Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Buick Terraza and Saturn Relay earned the highest rating of Good in the IIHS offset frontal crash test, but was rated only Acceptable and Poor in the IIHS side crash test with and without the optional side airbags, respectively.

The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV built on the GM Lambda platform that underpins the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook. It replaces the Uplander minivan, Ascender SUV and Chevrolet TrailBlazer SUV. The Traverse is built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, at the former Saturn plant where the S-Series, Ion, and Vue were produced from 1990 to 2007.

The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and arrived at dealerships in October 2008, competing with the Ford Flex which debuted around the same time. The Traverse was part of a product placement by GM in the NBC drama My Own Worst Enemy, along with the new Chevrolet Camaro; the show was cancelled in mid-November 2008.

It is speculated that the Traverse is GM’s replacement for their new lack of minivans. The Traverse offers seating for 8, and has less ground clearance than its sister crossovers (on the lambda platform). The only minivan feature missing are the trademark sliding side doors.

The Chevrolet Traverse features the LLT engine, a 3.6 L (3564 cc, 217 cu in) V6 engine with VVT and direct injection.[1] The other Lambda-based vehicles also have this powertrain in the 2009 model year. A 6-speed automatic transmission gives power to the front or all wheels.[2] The Traverse delivers 281 hp (210 kW) with the 3.6L VVT engine and one exhaust tip, or 288 hp (215 kW) with dual exhaust tips (the LTZ model).[1]

The Traverse name was originally used for a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that concept gave way when the Chevrolet Equinox launched for the 2005 model year. The production Traverse’s design was inspired by the 2005 Chevrolet Sequel concept, and has a chevron-shaped grille similar to the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. The Traverse has unique sheet metal different from the other Lambda crossovers, with the exception of the doors.

The Chevrolet TrailBlazer is a mid-size SUV produced by the Chevrolet division of American automaker General Motors. It was introduced in 1999 as an upscale trim line of the Blazer. In 2002, the TrailBlazer was upgraded to a new platform (GMT360 for 5 passenger models, GMT370 for 7 passenger, and GMT305 for the Envoy XUV). Production of the Blazer overlapped with the TrailBlazer until 2005, when the 2-door was sold at dealers while the 4-door was fleet only (until the 2004 model year).

The TrailBlazer won the North American Truck of the Year award in 2002. The 4.2L I6 Atlas LL8 won Ward’s Best Engine from 2002-2004 with innovative features such as DOHC, Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on the exhaust camshaft, and GM’s Patented “Lost-Foam” casting process.

The TrailBlazer is based on a truck platform, with all models having four-wheel drive as an option with both automatic engagement and the more traditional “4 High” and “4 Low” gearings. Its main disadvantage is its increased width (as compared to a Jeep Wrangler) and lack of suspension travel, causing it to high side when it encounters high-camber-variance terrain or large rocks. Additionally, it lacks either locking hubs or a limited slip differential. Instead a G80 locking rear differential is available as an option on all models except for the SS which has a G86 LSD standard.

The TrailBlazer was facelifted for 2006. A new front fascia and interior trim were included with the refresh, but only apply to the upper-level LT models. The LS trim still has the 02-05 front and rear fascias. The SS gets trim-specific front and rear fascias plus colormatched side skirts.

The TrailBlazer comes with a 291 hp (217 kW) 277 lb·ft (376 N·m) all-aluminum 4.2 L “Atlas” LL8 inline-six engine standard and an optional 302 hp (225 kW) 330 lb·ft (447 N·m) aluminum small-block 5.3 L V8 with Active Fuel Management. The inline-six makes the TrailBlazer the most powerful six-cylinder SUV in its class. The Active Fuel Management system on the V8 engine shuts off 4 of the 8 cylinders during highway travel and idle to save fuel. The 6-cylinder versions of the TrailBlazer get up to 20 miles per US gallon (12 L/100 km; 24 mpg-imp) highway, according to refreshed United States Environmental Protection Agency? estimates.

The Chevrolet Tahoe (and very similar GMC Yukon) is a full-size SUV from General Motors. Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their Blazer/Jimmy model names through the early 1990s. This situation changed when GMC rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the Yukon in 1992. Chevrolet waited until 1994′s introduction of a four-door version to rebadge the mid-size S-10 Blazer as the Blazer, renaming the full-size Blazer as the Tahoe.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon currently serve as General Motors’ full-size SUVs. Lengthened wheelbase models are available for both as the Suburban for the Tahoe and Yukon XL for the Yukon. A luxury Denali model joined the Yukon lineup in 1998. As of 2002, a Denali version of the Yukon XL was also available as the Yukon XL Denali.

In North America, the Tahoe is sometimes used for police car use, especially in rural areas where four-wheel drive and more ground clearance are necessary.

The new GMC Yukon was introduced for 1992, while Chevrolet continued calling their version the Blazer. All were 2-door models through 1994. In 1995 the Chevy changed the name of the Blazer to Tahoe and introduced a 4-door version. The Tahoe was Motor Trend magazine’s Truck of the Year for 1996.

The Tahoe/Yukon were shorter than the Suburban on which they were based, but shared that vehicle’s GMT400 platform. This was a true truck chassis, and was based on that used in the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck. Both two-door and four-door models were produced, as well as rear- and four-wheel drive. The two door weighs roughly 4500 pounds while the four door weighs approximately 5500 pounds. “AutoTrac” full-time all-wheel drive and OnStar were added for 1998. The upscale Denali trim line to the Yukon appeared around this time as the vehicles became popular with wealthy families.

The Chevrolet Suburban is a large sport utility vehicle from Chevrolet. It is the longest-lived continuous automobile nameplate still in production, dating from 1935 and is likely to be produced under this name for the foreseeable future. For most of its recent history, the Suburban has been a station wagon bodied version of the Chevrolet pickup truck, including the Chevrolet C/K series of truck-based vehicles. It has been traditionally one of General Motors’ most profitable vehicles, with relatively high resale value for an American truck and station wagon.[citation needed] The planned replacements for the Chevrolet Suburban and the Chevrolet Tahoe were cancelled by GM executives in 2008.[1]

Many automotive companies in the United States used the “Suburban” name to indicate a windowed, station wagon type body on a commercial frame including Dodge, Plymouth, Studebaker, Nash, Chevrolet, and GMC. With the end of production of the Dodge Town Wagon in 1966, only General Motors continued to manufacture a vehicle branded as a “Suburban”, and they were awarded an exclusive trademark on the name in 1988. The Suburban is one of the largest SUVs on the market. It has outlasted many competitive vehicles such as the International Harvester Travelall, Jeep Wagoneer, and the Ford Excursion. The latest competitor is an extended Ford Expedition.

The Suburban of the 1990s and 2000s is a full-size SUV with three rows of seating, a full pickup truck frame, and V8 engine. The trucks are popular with large suburban families due to their “go anywhere, haul anything” nature, but have been criticized for their excessive bulk and poor fuel economy. The Suburban is one of the few station wagons available with all bench rows. Unlike smaller 3-row full-sized SUV’s such as the Tahoe, the extra length provides a full-sized cargo area behind the up to 9 passengers to carry their luggage for an extended trip, and tow a sizeable trailer. This class of truck remains much more popular than full-sized vans which can carry even more passengers and tow trailers.

Chevrolet began production of its all steel “carryall-suburban” in 1935. GMC brought out its version in 1937. These vehicles were also known as the “Suburban Carryall” until rebranded simply as the “Suburban” in the 1980s with the arrival of the SUV craze.

General Motors has produced these large SUVs for both its GMC and Chevrolet marques. In 2000 the GMC version was renamed the Yukon XL; Chevrolet models retain the Suburban name. In 2003 Cadillac introduced its version of the Suburban, calling it the Escalade ESV. Seating varies from 7 to 9 depending on the version and options selected. Shorter versions of these vehicles are sold as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade. Versions with a pickup bed in place of the rear cargo box are sold as the Chevrolet Avalanche and Cadillac Escalade EXT.

In recent years, the Suburban has been popular as a police car, fire chief’s vehicle, or EMS fly-car. Suburbans are also popular when converted for duty as a limousine. The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV operates a fleet of purple Suburbans to serve VIP patrons and high rollers. On the HBO series The Sopranos Tony Soprano drives a GMT400 model Chevrolet Suburban.
